attach PNGs?

Ok, so it seems you CAN attach PNGs, but only to a new thread.

New thread: txt pdf png
New post in an existing thread: txt pdf zip

What..? Why?

Allow PNG attachments for posts in an existing thread, that way people stop attaching PDFs.

I know how to post images. I just don't understand why it is inconsistent between new threads (first post of a thread) and new posts (replies in a thread).

Anyone have any input on this? Users wanting to attach an image (not inline it in their post) are typically adding the image to a PDF and attaching that, or zipping the image and attaching. Is this intended?
