Re: Audio Malware

Hi, Water88; welcome to our community!

Rainbow_2 has given you the best advice, if you have other reasons to believe you may have picked up some malware. But I've also seen a few circumstances where a program (like America Online) or a webpage (with scripting or active code) will start playing a commercial or an announcement automatically, even if you've minimized its window, or if you hovered your mouse cursor over its part of the screen. Forgive me if you know all this and are quite certain you're dealing with a nasty, but before you go through the hassle of one of the specialized forums, I figured I ought to double-check!

One of the ways you would know whether this sort of thing was in play would be if the unwanted audio starts playing after a "clean boot" of your computer, where you haven't run any programs; that would suggest your machine is actually infeected. If, on the other hand, it only happens when other programs or a web browser are open in the background, you might just be dealing with a routine annoyance brought to you by a program or site you're using. Such things have even caught me by surprise a time or two--and taken me five minutes or so to finally identify and shut down the window that's doing it!

V/R,
