Auto-Protect not working?

For 3 days my Norton is giving me a red error when I open it. It says 'you are in danger, your pc is not automaticly protected vs virusses, spyware and other risks'.

When I press the yellowish button: Solve now, Norton seems to be trying to repair the auto-protect function, but it always fails.

When I look into my settings, I can see the slider of auto-protect greyed out (but it's on, I think). All the rest is working perfectly fine!

Running windows 10.

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

Add me to the list ... same problem for about a week now.  I've done the removal and reinstall about 3 times and it seems to behave properly for maybe 5-10 minutes, but then reverts back to the auto-protect being disabled.  I do recall getting an error code once.  Also running Windows 10.

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

I have windows 8 on a laptop all to current windows updates.

This keeps happening. Auto protect switches off by itself.

I use the Norton tool to remove and install and 5mins later off it switches,

Used a chat session he took over my pc after about 30minutes he just gave up and left me without any antivirus software.

Since then I have re installed but get this error!!!

Not good enough!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

I've had the same problem for over a week with version 27.7.0.76. (YOU ARE AT RISK) HP laptop running windows 8. Will not run scan automatically or manually. Get error code 3038 104. Cannot fix itself. Norton says to reboot. (That fixed it for a few minutes once.) If that doesn't work run Norton remove and reinstall.  Did that and performed updates until there were no more. Back to version 27.7.0.76. Two hours later I was done! Worked normally for ~1 day. I could do a manual quick scan and I think it did one automatic quick scan. Then the same thing happened again. Could not fix itself and no more scans.

I did Norton remove and reinstall again but this time I stopped updating when I got to version 22.6.0.142 and guess what? Norton is happy as a lark with the older version. Updates are current and I'm protected. GREEN GREEN GREEN. Automatic scans and manual scans are running fine for 3 days now. Obviously Norton has a snafu in their new version of software.27.7.0.76. You can check your version by opening up Norton and clicking "Help" then "About". Been broke a while now, hope they are working through the holiday weekend on this. RED DISPLAYS SAYING YOU ARE AT RISK makes people nervous! I see many posts on this. Windows updates also have been heavy lately also. Frankly I'm surprised they don't have more problems.

Norton Support - Same problem here, windows 7 Toshiba L755 laptop, Norton 360 software. After a recent live update was done, I am getting the same auto protect disabled notice and the fix does not work, same screen shot as above. Two remove and re installs and works for a few minutes then reverts back to disabled.

WHAT IS THE SOLUTION? TIRED WITH MESSING WITH THIS!  At this point I might have to buy another anti virus program for my three PC's from another supplier.

I just posted on another thread on the same topic. Same error messages. HP Windows 7. Try to fix. Won't fix. Go to help...tries to fix and says 'success' but the red cross is still showing. There must be a patch or something for this....?

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

I've had the exact same issues as so many people have already mentioned. I've been getting two different error codes: 3038,104 and 3035,6. I've used Norton for years. My subscription is current and has not lapsed between renewals. I've tried reinstalling and that doesn't work. When Norton attempts to repair itself, it shows that the installation problem has been resolved, but that only lasts a few minutes -- then to goes back to a red X icon, telling me that I'm at risk. So if this is happening with so many people, I'm assuming it's some sort of problem with Norton and not my installation in particular, right? I can live with the red X icon, but I need to know that my computer is protected since this is a desktop that I use for working at home. Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

I am suffering from the same problem as well. Auto Protect is fine when my computer boots up and then after about a minute I get a warning.

It seems there is a bug in the new update.

How about an update or patch Norton?

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

After a few weeks living with this problem I have solved my issue with auto protect not working. It took me three tries of removing and re-installing Norton 360 before it finally worked. I recommend you close all open windows during this process, have all current updates for your computer installed along with any Norton updates. Have a good quality signal & private Internet connection that is uninterrupted during the removal and reinstall process. Make sure you are letting the removal and reinstall process be the only thing that the computer is doing during this process Do not be surfing the web and browsing while the process is working. Good luck!

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

So it might be the fast start up that's the problem? If one shuts down their computer using "restart"  rather than shut down, does that give the machine a complete shut down?

Hello

Turning off Fast Startup fixes many issues with Norton and other products also.

Here is a link for turning off Fast Startup in Windows 10

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

Thanks for your input Techfile. I tried reinstalling twice before I read your post. I was pretty confident that I didn't have other programs going at the same time, but I thought it was worth another try. So I followed your directions (which were quite good, by the way), and it seemed to work for the better portion of a day. But now the problem is back again. I still think your instructions are definitely worth following, but it seems like this may be a larger issue within Norton. Hope yours continues to work! :-)

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

My Norton product did an auto update over night and now I have this auto-protect issue also.  I've tried the remove and reinstall fix;  it worked for about 3 hours then reverted to the auto-protect red flag again.  From all the comments, this seems to be a Norton problem with the product.  What is being done to get this corrected?  When this error flag is present, is any portion of the protection working?  What is not working?

Thanks

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

I have been experiencing this problem as well for two days. Running Windows 10. Uninstalled and reinstalled per support. Did not work, and in effect caused a host of other temporary problems which have since resolved. I tried checking that the computer date was correct. I tried updating until there weren't any more and then restarting. I tried turning off fast start up option. I tried making sure the subscription status was synced. So far nothing has worked, or it seems it has worked for few minutes then goes back to error status, sometimes showing a different error which will also not auto fix, and then reverts back to this Auto-Protect not working thing.

I'm having the same problems since doing a Norton update yesterday. Did the uninstall/reinstall bit twice. Everything works fine for about 5 minutes then back to having no auto-protect.

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

Ya Man, It's not as if uninstalling and reinstalling does not take time and effort.

Norton should really try to figure this out soon, and post a solution or new update!

How to have faith in a company who is supposed to protect us against the threats it keeps harping about?

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

I fixed the issue by uninstalling then reinstalling from the CD (wouldn't do it via the web for some reason) that same night. No issues since then touch wood.

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

I have also had this problem with my windows 7 system for the past two days. The only support seems to be online chat, which was completely useless. I have had this happen several times over the past few years with Norton on several machines after it downloads new updates, and I am getting quite tired of it. Usually I just have to wait a few days until the next update for it to get fixed, with no reliable AV in the meantime.  I guess it is time to switch to something besides Norton for all of my systems.

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

This has got to be a bug in Norton that's related to updates. I uninstalled and reinstalled (for the fifth time) 3 days ago. It seemed to be working fine until this morning, right after receiving an "update" from Norton. Now, it's back to the same old problem -- a red X on the Norton icon telling me my computer is at risk, and auto-protect can't be fixed. So I'm wondering...are the folks at Norton not reading these posts?? I mean, it's obvious there's a problem. Not only are a bunch of us responding to this thread, but there are countless other threads related to the exact same topic. Do they have people working on it?? Could they tell us if they do?? It would be nice to know. If they don't get it fixed soon, I'm going to have to switch to another product. I hate to do it after so many years with Norton, but this is just ridiculous.

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

I don't think they read the posts, this is just a way to let people "vent" without having to do anything about it

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

I had this problem also, Norton tech says they are working to fix but for now you can work around it by opening the program then go to settings then antivirus then change the boot time protection to aggressive by moving the slider all the way to the left then reboot the machine.  This worked for me yesterday and is still okay today so far.

Kudos0

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

Changing the Boot protection to agressive did not solve the issue. This is getting ridiculous. I just reinstalled Norton three times in a row and the problem just keeps re-occurring. For the record, this is only happening on my Windows 8.1 machine. My Windows 7 and Windows XP machines do not have this problem (at least not yet; I refuse to reboot for fear of rendering those machines unusable).

This last time when I re-installed 22.7.0.76 I immediately did a Live Update.  It downloaded and installed 16 updates. It told  me I had to reboot. So I did. When the computer restarted I reopened Norton and did another Live Update. This time it downloaded 1 update. Then it immediately kicked off a QuickScan (on its own). Two seconds later the red X appeared and Norton told me I was at risk and that I now have uninstall and re-install a FOURTH time. By the way after all the live updates, the version number was still 22.7.0.76.  I would think if I were getting program updates, that the version number would change.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results!

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

I went back 3 days and did a restore and now the Norton will not open. this is not worth it

Kudos0

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

Yeah, reinstall and repair doesn't fix the problem. This problem doesn't seem to effect every system, others are not seeing the same issue I was. Norton caused issues with the start menu not showing up (click, or hitting windows key). I wiped my windows machine, reinstalled all my important programs, updated norton and no problems detected yet. There may have been a problem with 'locked drives', still investigating.

Re: Auto-Protect not working?

Hello Rodney Vogt

Doing a System Restore tends to break Antivirus programs. After system restore, it is necessary to reinstall your Norton program. You will have to remove the broken program first.

www.norton.com/nft  You can install the program from your Norton Account.

Thanks.
