run LiveUpdates several times until no updates found > re-start not under the influence of Fast Startup > repeat

Re: Auto-Protect stop working

This doesn't work for me, the REMOVE & REINSTALL dies with a MSFT dialog that says the s/w has stopped working. Windows will close the program yada, yada, yada. I have been unable to get to anyone at Norton within a reasonable timeframe. I suspect that's because everyone is doing remote fixes for every case. It would be better to post a fix. My system is a Windows 10 Toshiba Satellite laptop.

Re: Auto-Protect stop working

Hi, Glenn. Have you tried the Norton Removal Tool which does a more thorough removal ?  https://www.norton.com/nrt

You can then download a fresh preactivated copy from your Norton Account.  https://manage.norton.com/

If used, please read the Before you begin note and run Live Update after the new install until no more are found, and then reboot.

Let us know how you go.

Re: Auto-Protect stop working

I pulled the Norton Removal Tool, removed my version and reinstalled and (so far) things are good. I have not yet done a reboot (after the install) nor have I done a live update of the virus defs.

Re: Auto-Protect stop working

Hi, Glenn. Just a reminder that in Win 10, Norton requires a full restart to update correctly and as bjm_ says, disable Fast Start Up, as it is known to cause issues.

Re: Auto-Protect stop working

Been having the same problem for well over a week. First started when I was in hospital and my wife was using the computer at home. Great news to receive (when I was in hospital) that Norton was not doing the job it is paid to do.

I have read all the threads and done all the "fixes". Please don't make me laugh.

The only thing that fixes it temporary is to run live update and then reboot. A pain when you half way in to doing something on the net.

Most of the posts refer to Windows 10 but I have the problem using Windows 7. Updating to Windows 10 is not an option as I need this version of Windows to be able to work from home when I am well enough to do again.

If the only permanent fix to this is to dump Norton and buy another company's then that is what I must do. There is no peace of mind in using Norton at the moment.

Re: Auto-Protect stop working

Hello

I have brought this topic to Norton's attention. No response yet since they just saw the notice today and they have to go over everything from the weekend.

Thanks.

Re: Auto-Protect stop working

The error just keeps occurring and still nothing from Norton.

Norton - you have failed me and others in both not providing safe internet surfing and not providing good customer service.

@leegs

Try reinstalling Norton, but this time do a complete uninstall starting with removing it from Control Panel, then run the Norton Removal Tool which does a deeper cleaning of your present installation.   Afterwards, you can download a preactived copy from your Norton Account. After the install, run LiveUpdate, rebooting when requested, until no more are found and then restart your machine.

Please let us know if that helped.

Re: Auto-Protect stop working

We've just released an Auto-Protect HotFix that addresses this error. I recommend that you run LiveUpdate and restart your system as prompted. Once the hotfix is installed, let us know if you're still seeing the Auto-Protect issues. Thanks.

Re: Auto-Protect stop working

Removed Norton again as you suggested.

Just a couple of points - your link did not go to removal tool and I had to search for it. Also had some problems with the product licencing but was ok after I did a reboot.

Have since applied the new hotfix and again there has been no issues.

Very disappointed in the grief that this has caused me and I can see no good reason to renew my subscription after the current one expires.
