Auto-protect turns off by itself after new product update

Norton installed the newest product update and it installed fine. I rebooted again a couple hours after it finished and auto-protect turns off by itself, warning me that I did it and need to turn it back on. This happens after each reboot. It stays on for a couple minutes then turns off. Hitting fix now does nothing, and using the help diagnostic option says nothing is wrong. What do I do at this point? I'm running vanilla Windows 8.

Re: Auto-protect turns off by itself after new product update

UPDATE: I tried running a quick scan and I get a cannot fix, error-code "3038,104"

I'm not sure if I should reinstall if this is an error with the new update that'll be patched.

I ran the reinstall tool and that seems to have done the trick! Thank you!

Re: Auto-protect turns off by itself after new product update

I'm having the same problem. My Norton has updated 4 days ago and Auto Protect goes off after some minutes. Before it happens Norton Firewall reports Dropbox, Bonjour, and other trustable softwares trying to access internet. When you put "always allow" it keeps warning again and again until it crashes with the unrepairable error. After that auto protect goes off and the scan don't perform anymore. Any solution?

Re: Auto-protect turns off by itself after new product update

I'm encountering the same problem once more. Nothing updated this time, it happened after a restart. Removal and reinstallation fixed it for a week and now it's back. Auto-protect turns off, won't turn on, and fix now doesn't work.

@kylemc15, Are you still getting the error code "3038,104"? I have sent you a private message requesting logs via forum private message. Please check it when you get a chance.

@PauloNP, Could you please let us know the exact error message shown on your Norton?

Re: Auto-protect turns off by itself after new product update

Any update on this?  My NS V22.7 seems to be OK.  But, I've been helping 3 other people over the phone with Win7 V22.7 with this auto-protect problem.  I've had them do a remove / reinstall and the auto protect problem came back on all the computers after a few days.

The V22.7 update is a huge mess ...

Got a screen notice from Norton 360 to restart my computer, and I did. Now message says Auto Protect is not working, and when I click to "Fix Now", it processes but the outcome is "Not fixed".

Re: Auto-protect turns off by itself after new product update

I don't think there was an error message showing on the screen, but I'll see if I can find out.  These are friends computers that I'm helping with over the phone, so I don't have direct access.  My V22.7 isn't seeing this issue.

I know that they were getting a warning from the taskbar icon that auto-protect was off.  On the main Norton window under settings, the auto protect is greyed out and cannot be turned on.  Also, right clicking on the task-bar icon does not give an option to enable auto protect.  Running the remove/reinstall tool appeared to fix the issue for a few days, and then I was contacted that the problem came back.

From bjm's link, it sounds promising that there may be a patch coming soon based on a registry fix?

Re: Auto-protect turns off by itself after new product update

This problem (3038, 104) started on 7/3/16 on my girlfriend's Win 7 Toshiba when she tried a quick scan. Cold-boot made it go away for one quick scan. Also, autoprotect turned itself off and no way to turn it back on (grayed out). Went through remove and re-install and non-existent autofix 3 times. Finally 7/4 Norton completely disappeared. 7/6/16 FIVE very long hours on the phone w/ effing "cust support" doing and re-doing RNR and messing w/ the hard drive and still no resolution. 7/7/16 autoprotect is turned on in both admin and user accts while safesurf is turned off (and grayed out) on user acct. And still getting 3038, 104 on both accts. I've used Norton 10-12 years and still have 6 months left on Norton subscription, but this is the fourth time (in six months) that I've wasted hours and hours on Norton's f-ups. Kaspersky, here we come!!! p.s. (So far) Win 8.1 on HP no prob.

Same set of problems as everyone else for me after doing a Norton upgrade yesterday. Did uninstall/reinstall twice. Fixes the problem for about 5 minutes then back to having no auto-protect. Norton gave me error code 3035,6 after one try to fix it.

I have had to run remove and reinstall every time I turn off and restart. Just to get Norton to work right for several days. Would be nice if this issue would be resolved some time soon.

Re: Auto-protect turns off by itself after new product update

Issue is still not fixed, problem seems to occur right after the latest update of the software. Tried reinstalling with the Norton remove and install tool, and Auto-Protect started working back again only for a brief period until the system prompted me for an update again. Guess what happened after the update? Back to square one. Norton, please attend to this issue and fix it asap. Regards

Re: Auto-protect turns off by itself after new product update

I am having the same problems.  I was getting error 3035, 6; I removed & reinstalled several times.  Finally did the online chat and let *someone* provide remote support.  After the "solution" I now get error 3048, 3.  At least I know I'm not alone.  Please fix!

Re: Auto-protect turns off by itself after new product update

I also started having this problem after upgrading my Norton Security to 22.7.0.76 shortly after installing last week's important Windows 8.1 updates. I've tried the Norton Remove and Reinstall tool to no avail.

Re: Auto-protect turns off by itself after new product update

I am running Norton Security on Windows 10 on a November 2015 MSI Laptop. Up until a couple of weeks ago it was fine then Auto Protect turned itself off and it wouldn't fix giving error 3038,104. I followed support suggestions and ran remove and reinstall. This seemed to fix it and was ok until yesterday. The problem occurred again, this time giving error 3035,6. I did the remove and reinstall again. Things seem ok then Auto Protect goes off again and will not fix. I must have done the r and r multiple times. Eventually I managed to keep the Auto Protect on by not doing an auto update

This morning back to square one. Have done r and r twice and cannot keep the Auto Protect on, fix doesn't work and getting error 3035,6

Seems to be same issue as everyone else but thought I would give background detail.

I am now seriously cheesed off with Norton and this needs fixing now. I still have nearly 4 months subscription left and am loath to switch to something else but I will be doing this soon as I cannot afford to be without my laptop and not prepared to run it unprotected

Please will someone from Norton advise when this will be fixed. Thank you

Re: Auto-protect turns off by itself after new product update

David C 1:  I must have done the r and r multiple times.

Note: Remove & Reinstall saves settings.
Curious, have you tried Norton Remove & Reinstall Tool > Advanced Options > Remove Only

Kudos0

Re: Auto-protect turns off by itself after new product update

Thanks for the suggestion bjm, I will try the remove only option next time it happens. I presume that I then download the product afresh from Norton?

I have actually enjoyed about 2 or 3 hours of Norton working properly this afternoon without Auto Protect turning itself off. Not quite sure how I achieved that though, but I did turn off the auto update after the last r and r. Cannot continue on that basis though!!!

Re: Auto-protect turns off by itself after new product update

David C 1,
Note: Auto-Protect greyed has with/without asterisk.  I've recently had both.
With asterisk has sorted for me with re-start not under Fast Startup influence.
Without asterisk sorted for me with R&R, run LiveUpdate, re-start not under Fast Startup influence.
Note: Asterisk indicates pending action requiring re-start.  maybe, with Remove Only and not saving Settings will sort.  IDK for sure.  YMMV
Note: backup ID Safe, just in case.

Re: Auto-protect turns off by itself after new product update

Hello bjm, I have just had a busy hour

Error occurred again a few minutes into session. I tried R&R again (Had the non asterisk scenario) and I definitely have Windows 10 fast startup turned off. All seemed to go well but error happened again

I then tried the complete removal option, and reinstalled Norton Security from the website. I followed up with a live update, restart and then did a quick scan. So far, so good. I am still up and running with auto protect on

Hopefully the problem is now fixed for good. It is a shame that the remove and reinstall option does not do what it says on the tin!!!  If my problem is indeed solved (time will tell) then perhaps Norton should suggest the complete removal and separate install of the product as a solution, rather than the seemingly flawed R&R option

I would like to thank you for your suggestions and time taken in helping me through these issues. It is good to know that there are people out there like you

Hoping too.   Greyed Settings with asterisk goes back to Jan 2015.  So, really hoping greyed Setting without asterisk is now fixed for good too.
Let us know...

Yay! Looks like one of today's Live Updates had a fix. One of the updates required a restart and since then Auto Protect has stayed enabled and I was finally able to run a quick scan.

Re: Auto-protect turns off by itself after new product update

Hi everyone,

We have released an Auto-Protect HotFix addressing "Auto Protect is off , Errors 3035,6 and 3038,104, You Are At Risk. Your PC is not automatically protected from viruses, spyware, and other risks" and Auto Protect is grayed out" issues via LiveUpdate. This will update all languages for 22.7.0.76, and will not change the product version.

Note: A system restart is required to apply patch.

Please see 22.7.0.76 release announcement blog and Norton 22.7 - Hot Issues and Fixes for more details.
