Automatic background tasks not working

Everything working OK up to yesterday & first boot of today. Thereafter automatic background tasks that require to be in idle, Live Update, Scan and other various items not working although computer shows in idle mode on performance tabs. Noticed on Desktop this morning (UK) all worked then not working thereafter. Tried on Laptop (not been on since Monday), initially all worked OK then stopped. Something happened in the first update today on both. Any one else with issues ?. Did notice Monday, 'Product Update' came thru' mid morning (after laptop shutdown), same came thru' mid day today on booting Laptop. Updated to 22.17 towards end of last week, no problems till today

Re: Automatic background tasks not working

Tibbies4Life:

...So is it best to have the Automatic Resume Delay from Sleep; Automatic Task Delay; and Idle Time Out set to few minutes as you show above or leave set to Norton default minutes?...

 Hi Tibbies4Life:

The default settings work fine for me.  I only wanted to point out that there are several factors that affect how much time your computer stays in idle mode throughout the day, so you shouldn't be overly concerned if someone in this thread said they had three Quick Scans in one day and you only had one - it's like comparing apples and oranges.  If you want Quick Scans to run more frequently on your system it might be necessary to tweak your computer power plan and Norton idle time settings to maximize the possible number of times Automatic LiveUpdates and other background tasks run throughout the day, but there's no one "best" setting that suits everyone.  You might even have unnecessary Norton tasks like disk defragmenters running during system idles that can be disabled to free up system resources during system idles.  See the list of "optional" Norton tasks I always disable on my computer in DavisonRoy's thread Background Tasks Performed When System is Not Idle.

My Performance Graph for March 2019 below shows my NS Deluxe v22.15.1.8  (which was not affected by the bug discussed in this thread) had several days where a Quick Scan only ran once during the day, and even one day (Sunday, March 10th) where no Quick Scan ran because I didn't receive a SDS Definition update that day (note that I had Performance Monitoring disabled the first week of March for testing so there is no data in the graph for that first week).  That doesn't concern me because I've been using Norton for several years and I can't recall a single incident where a file-based Quick Scan (or Full System Scan) detected malware that wasn't caught by Download Insight when it was first downloaded and also evaded real-time SONAR heuristic (behaviour-based) detection when the file was executed.  The few Quick Scan detections I've had always turned out to be a false positive or some harmless utility (potentially unwanted program / PUP) that was sitting on my hard drive for years before Norton decided to add to their detection list.  Norton v22.x products also introduced SONAR cloud scanning in 2014 where real-time protection uses the latest available definitions stored in the "cloud" on the Norton servers (assuming you are connected to the internet when the scan occurs), so having the latest available SDS Definition set stored on your local computer isn't as critical as it was in the past.

If my Quick Scans stop for more than a day or two that only concerns me because it likely means my Automatic LiveUpdates have stopped running correctly, which also means I might not be getting definition updates that are actually critical to my real-time protection like Intrusion Protection (IPS) Definitions and SONAR updates. As I noted in NIS Downloading All Updates But SDS Definitions, it took an entire week with no SDS Definition updates (and subsequently no Quick Scans) before Norton threw a warning that my virus definitions were out-of-date and my system was "At Risk" - hopefully because my Automatic LiveUpdates were still delivering other important updates like IPS Definitions and SONAR updates for my real-time protection.

Re: Automatic background tasks not working

Hello

In most cases, there are only 1 set of SDS definitions released on Saturday and Sunday, so there would be only 1 idle quick scan run. My scheduled full system scan is s scheduled for Mondays at 3 AM and not for every 7 days.. So I am hoping it will go back to my Monday morning scan time. Usually when I run a manual full system scan during the week, it still runs the scan on Monday morning.  The scans are scheduled for the middle of the night so I know the scans won't be interrupted by me. Of course, there might be other things that might interrupt it. I used to have it scheduled for 2 AM and then I noticed it  had issues when time changed for Day Light Savings Time even though that happens on Sunday at 2 AM, so I changed it to Monday at 3 AM. I accidentally deleted my History Log for Automatic Live History tonight, so I can't look back to see what happened in the past. I had 17 pages of them, so I would have had to delete them soon anyway since they stop recording I believe at 20 pages if I remember correctly.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.

Re: Automatic background tasks not working

@Imacri,

Thank you for your insight and  very informed post.  It has helped me understand NIS better.  You are so kind to assist.   My tasks are running automatically as intended so I will say that the issue for now seems to be resolved.

@Floplot,

Thank you for your post and help.  Glad that all seems to be running as intended.  My Full Scan ran as scheduled which for me is Saturday.

Thank you all and have a good day!

Re: Automatic background tasks not working

Hello Sunil

I received a NGC update thru Live Update last week which did fix the automatic background tasks. It did a automatic full system scan on Thursday when my scheduled time is Monday at 3 AM. I guess it did one on Thursday since I had missed 2 Monday scans. My regular scan ran this morning and also the file cleanups happened also as scheduled. Please thank the Team involved. All seems good now.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.

Re: Automatic background tasks not working

The day after you replied to my post (April 5-6) I noticed that all the automatic tasks were working again.  Thanks.
