Automatic scanning is not done automatically?

Hello, everybody!

The Compressed File Scan is turned on in my NIS (21.0.1.3), but I do not receive Compressed File Scan Reports when downloading a compressed file and have no idea whether the file has been scanned and checked or not.

If compressed files are only checked when right-clicking or unpacking an archive, why the Compressed File Scan description says: «By automatically scanning all compressed files, Norton Internet Security maintains a higher level of security»?

Welcome to the forums

When you are downloading files, it is the Norton Download Insight feature that looks at the reputation of the file. It is not scanned for malware at this time.

The Compressed File scan setting is for malware scans. When you run a full system scan, compressed file scanning can be turned off to shorten the scan time. Turning the setting off can also help in some cases where scanning will not complete.

You are still protected with this setting turned off, because when the files within the archive are accessed  they are scanned by the AutoProtect feature.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

peterweb, thanks a lot for your kind reply!

So, I should not expect NIS (neither Download Insight nor any other tool) to provide me with any piece of information regarding the downloaded archives until I unpack those archives, or launch some scanning or a scanning starts according to the schedule. Is it correct?

Re: Automatic scanning is not done automatically?

The only information you might run into is if Download Insight notes your downloaded compressed file has an issue with its reputation. ie If the file is very new, you might see a message telling you the file is relatively unknown. This does not mean unsafe, it is just too new for Norton to have any information on it.
