Backing Up two Notebooks with one external harddrive

Hello

Is there a way to backup two Notebooks to a external harddrive?  Right now it wants to back up to the same folder and overwrite the other one.

Thanks

No. However, there is an workaround. You can repartition the external disk, so it shows up as say...external disk F: and G:. It is like cutting it into 2 pieces. Then, you can have Norton backup one notebook to F: and one to G:.

Or, you can use the 2gb of free online backup.

@ Brewer:

Yes, you can back up 2 different computers to the same drive with N360 v2.

The backups WILL go to the same main folder, but will be backed up to 2 different folders inside that main folder.

So, it will basically look like this:

D:\Norton360_Backup , with 2 folders inside (after running backup on both machines) that look similar to this:

{12345-67890-12345-67890}

{67890-12345-67890-12345}

Sounds good -- is there any user-friendly way to identify which folder is which computer?

Hmmm.

By the timestamp of the folder (date created).

Thats the only way I know of.

Not very satisfactory over a period of time -- any chance of working on this to enable the user to name a folder to contain all the files from one computer?

BTW Is it standard (maybe in VISTA?) that you can add comments to a file or is it a third party plug in? If so this might provide a workaround if it did not upset the backup engine?

Well, I am no longer working on N360, so I dont know what is going into V3.0.

Adding comments may provide easier access, but you might have to do the legwork testing that yourself (see above comment).

Any ideas about partitioning software?

"Any ideas about partitioning software?"

In regards to what?

What are you trying to do, and on what OS?

I always used PQ's Partition Magic but it is not compatible with VISTA so I switched to  Acronis Disk Magagement Suite -- I found it's appearance more similar to PM than the alternative that many use from Paragon.

To Dave Hauser -- perhaps as a way of getting the ability to have a folder labeled for each Notebook. Have two logical drives and a folder in each?

Re: Backing Up two Notebooks with one external harddrive

Well, if you mean partitioning the USB drive, yes you could use either of those 2 apps (although, like you said, PM 8.05 on XP sp2 only) to make 2 partitions.

Unless you want to boot from the usb drive, I would make both of them from a single extended partition, logical drives.

If you want to access them from dos, make them fat32.

If you want to boot from it, make either 1 primary and 1 extended, or both as primary.

Now, if you want to have a partition split on you main laptop hdd, you can re-size the drive, and just make the new free space an extended drive, then logical partition.

I mean he could partition his external disk so Norton can make one back up to say.. F: and another to G:

Except if you are using VISTA with which it is not compatible.
