Aside of installing NIS and using a standard account, are there any simple changes from the default install that could enhance security?

System Preferences>Security and Sharing are good places to start. Also Network (de-activate services you don't use). The Apple bible on this stuff is available at the link below, but be aware that many of the tweaks in this pdf are aimed at more advanced users or institutions.
