blocked web sites are still accessible

My kids still seem to be able to access blocked sites.  specifically, Norton Online is constantly sending me messages that my daughter has accessed a blocked site.  her vista laptop is set so that her login is limited.  my son seems to have a similar problem but his is an XP-based machine.  what's going on and how do I fix it?

Re: blocked web sites are still accessible

Hi jaychang,

Have they always been able to access the blocked websites since you installed the software Norton Safety Minder on their pcs?

What country are you in?

Thanks,

Katie

Thanks Katie

Re: blocked web sites are still accessible

I am in the US.  I have been getting notices since I installed the product.  I've seen the issue in the forums about being in Saudi Arabia but nothing else seems to apply.  I don't believe it's a permission thing - I've successfully confirmed time locking/unlocking seems to work.  but as far as I know they have always been able to visit the site, they just get a popup saying that the site is blocked.

Hi jaychang,

Please make sure you have the “Web supervision” turned On and select the option “Block the site”, not “Give a warning but allow KidXXX on the site anyway” under Settings -> Web(GO)

Thanks,

Katie

Thanks Katie

I set it up this way when I set up the software.

Could you uninstall and reinstall Norton Safety Minder to see if it helps?

Thanks,

Re: blocked web sites are still accessible

I have uninstalled and re-installed norton online and I am still not seeing it block access to anything.  for example, I went to Gmail under my son's account.  This is classified as a chat system and blocked by my rules.  yet my son is able to access gmail just fine and send emails.  the only notice he gets is a popup saying it's a blocked site.  this defeats the purpose of using the software.  is this intentional on Norton's part?

Re: blocked web sites are still accessible

are you specifically setting a block on www.gmail.com?

do you have the settings set to warn or block?

what browser are you using?

can you be more specific as to the url it's blocking or popping up saying that it's blocking?

Re: blocked web sites are still accessible

I am going to www.gmail.com, which redirects to mail.google.com.

the redirection works fine.  the access to gmail works fine.  once I'm in gmail, there is a popup saying that it is a blocked site but nothing else happens.  as far as I know it is the standard popup that access to a prohibited site causes.

this is under IE 8.  everything is set (as far as I know via your web interface) to block access, not warn but allow.

I have not specifically created a block on gmail - I am relying on your filters to do that.  The point is not to block gmail in particular - the point is to use your filters so that I don't have to create rules for every single web site out there.  I'm using gmail because it's a nice simple test.  I could just as easily pick facebook or playboy for the test.

Re: blocked web sites are still accessible

some more updates.

on my daughter's Vista Home 32-bit edition under IE 8

direct access to www.facebook.com or www.myspace.com does NOT allow access and works as expected.

indirect access (ie when a URL such as www.gmail.com redirects to something like https://mail.google.com/?zx=ogc2ajxq3bk#inbox), then your application fails and access is allowed.  this holds true for other sites as well.  Norton Online seems to detect that the primary domain is not allowed but since access is not to the primary domain but a subdirectory under the primary, it does not block the access.  it pops up the warning but still permits the user to go to the sub-URL.

Re: blocked web sites are still accessible

Can you check to be certain our plug-in is installed and working for IE8.

https://mail.google.com/?zx=ogc2ajxq3bk#inbox does indeed map to Web Mail, I just checked.

Re: blocked web sites are still accessible

I'm confused - do you mean the onlinefamily software or is there some other plugin I'm not using?

I'm not disagreeing that it's mapping to webmail - I'm asking why I get a notice saying that the site is blocked when the site is actually accessible?

Re: blocked web sites are still accessible

There is a plugin installed as part of Norton Safety Minder for IE 8.

If you look at menu item tools -> manage add ins, you should see Norton Safety Minder as a plug-in enabled.

Re: blocked web sites are still accessible

First off, many thanks to Matt for giving me a call on a Saturday night.  This level of support is very rare in this day and age and I really appreciated it.

In talking with Matt, the primary issue is due to unfortunate wording in the activity log.  When I see in the activity log "blocked web site visited", I assume that that means they actually got to the site.  This is further confused by the fact that when you expand the message, a picture of the site visited appears in the details.  Matt assured me (and I was able to verify) that this is not the case and that the site is indeed blocked.  So the software is working as intended.

The other confusing thing happens in sites where there is an amalgam of services and subdomains being presented, such as in gmail.  Gmail is classified as a web mail site, and is allowed under my rules.  However, gmail has a chat component built into it, which is not allowed.  That is the portion that is being blocked and why a popup shows up saying that Norton has blocked access to a site.  Again, confusing, but working as intended.

Matt told me they hope to address some of these confusing presentations in the next version.

Re: blocked web sites are still accessible

We will need more information for us to help you.

Are you  logged in as your child?

Does the dog paw show in the tray?

What does the tooltip say when you float over the tray?

Did you complete the install of Norton Safety Minder?
