Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) on Windows 10 when using or installing Norton Security

Hello - I recently got a new PC and when I install Norton Security Deluxe (latest version downloaded 12/29/2019 from Norton site) I get the BSOD. When it's not installed I do not have issues. I get various error codes on the BSOD page:

MEMORY_MANAGEMENT

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

IRQL_UNEXPECTED_VALUE

It's unclear if Norton and some other software are conflicting on this system. I had a brand new image of Windows 10 installed from scratch and I still face the same issue. Any help is appreciated. Windows Update has been applied as well.

Again this happens even when attempting to install Norton Security. I have hence no proceeded with the install and the desktop is stable and does not restart.

Regards.

Re: Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) on Windows 10 when using or installing Norton Security

Hello Bijan. Did you have a pre-installed security suite on the computer before installing Norton? If so remove it, reboot. You may also want to disable "fast startup" in your power settings as leaving it enabled will not allow ALL DATA to be released from memory when restarting. Here is how to disable that setting. Make sure you reboot for the change to become system wide.

The error - MEMORY_MANAGEMENT - usually is referencing an outdated video driver

The errors - PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA and IRQL_UNEXPECTED_VALUE are both indicative of memory corruption, most likely cause by the memory management error references to the video driver.

Suggestion:

Get the latest video driver DIRECTLY from the manufacturer of the video adapter installed on your system. IE, Intel / Nvidia / ATI, etc. DO NOT use the WHQL driver.

Run Windows updates until you have ALL the latest security updates and are on the latest version of Windows, aka version 1909.

Reboot then reinstall your Norton product.

Re: Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) on Windows 10 when using or installing Norton Security

Hi SoulAsylum,

Many thanks for the solution. I did set the power management setting so that is is not on fast startup. I only had Windows Defender on the system.

I have reinstalled Norton Security again and will test a bit to see if I get the BSOD. Up to this point it has not happened.

Many thanks.

Hi @BijanM,

Please collect the Memory dump, should the issue recur. Thanks.

You are most welcome Bijan. Please keep us informed as to whether the issue reappears. You may want to collect the memory dump at Gayathri has suggested so further investigation can be done. We don't always get the results of those dump scrubs but it will help Norton to prevent others from having the same issue. I believe the fast startup issue was the problem, time will tell though. Let us know please.

Cheers

Re: Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) on Windows 10 when using or installing Norton Security

Hello,

My computer continued to get the BSOD. This time I was lucky to be able to run the Norton Erase tool prior to getting the BSOD. I removed Norton Security. I completely powered down the unit. After restarting, I am not getting the BSOD any longer.

Hence Norton Security is in some way associated to the BSOD on my unit.

Any ideas are appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) on Windows 10 when using or installing Norton Security

If you have ANY other malware or A/V software installed remove them and reboot. As was suggested in my earlier post. Check the actual manufacturer of your video adapter for THEIR Windows 10 drivers for your video. Download those drivers directly from their website. IE: Nvidia. Intel, AMD. Install them and reboot.

Try installing NS again, recheck for the BSOD happening. If nothing happens run live updates until no more are offered and reboot again. Next run live updates on Norton a second time and get all that are available. If none are available you should be good and up to date. Let us know if anything changes.

Re: Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) on Windows 10 when using or installing Norton Security

Hi SoulAsylum,

Thanks for the suggestions. I only have Windows Defender which seems to be part of the OS. I have NO other malware protection. I have checked all video and other drivers and Windows states they are all up to date.

I have now installed NS three times with the same outcome. I am not sure a fourth time will change the outcome.

I appreciate the effort. After decades of being a Symantec/Norton customer I think I have to not renew my subscription. Perhaps their QA testing process has gotten a little weak.

Thanks.

When you say:

I have checked all video and other drivers and Windows states they are all up to date.

We DON'T want you to use Windows as a gauge for drivers since the Windows WHQL drivers can be the cause. Find the drivers for your video adapter from the MANUFACTURER website and install them. Ignore what windows says as being up to date due to Microsoft will want you to use their drivers.

Cheers
