Blue screen from Norton Utilities

Last night I installed Norton Utilities and ran the registry compacter.  After rebooting I got a blue screen.  Now, I can't get past it and can't boot my computer.  For some reason, the system restore won't work either.  It shows my last restore point but the box is grayed out so I can't select it.  Windows 7 came pre-installed on my system so I don't have a disc.  I do have my system recovery discs but I'm afraid to use them because it will wipe out all of my files.  Safe mode also leads to a blue screen.

I use this computer for work and I can't afford to have it out of commission like this.  I need a way of booting to my desktop so I can delete Norton.

Hello iNeverSlice,

Please post what the exact BSOD erro  Message states. What version of Norton Utilities are you using? What specs are you running?

Re: Blue screen from Norton Utilities

I spent plenty of time with Norton phone support and the online chat support.  No luck at all.  I had to re-install windows.  Even though I had almost everything backed up I still lost a few things that I really needed.  This whole thing has been a total nightmare.  I've been a Norton user for a long time, but I just can't anymore.  I lost money due to this problem.

Re: Blue screen from Norton Utilities

If you would have been more specific on the kind of error you were getting then there might had been chance of restoring back things. But since you have already re-installed the Windows then nothing can done. However for future references I would recommend you to have backup program like Norton Ghost or system restore program like Restoret (the most astonishing part of this program is that you can restore computer from crash i.e Blue screen of death). I believe had you been utilizing the services of one of these products, you wouldn't have had much problems.

Re: Blue screen from Norton Utilities

You are correct, but I also know that if I had NOT used Norton Utilities I also would not have had any problems.

Just for the record, I was very specific on the phone with support and in the online chat.  I was told there was nothing that can be done.  The Norton rep eventually told me to call Microsoft and take it up with them.  Microsoft told me to call HP and take it up with them.  HP told me I'd have to pay for support since my computer is 2 yrs old and out of warranty.

Hello iNeverSlice,

It's unfortunate that norton Support told you that there was nothing that could be done about it because as a matter of fact I believe it could have. I will do my best to try and address agents regarding matters like BSOD's relating to Norton Utilities. In this case, BSOD caused by compacting is a very rare occurence but it happened none the less and I believe our support channels could have done better.
