Blue screens and norton errors

About a week ago I opened a program a friend gave me and it worked fine however I started getting a 3048,3 error from norton. It advised my to run power eraser and I did and it has found nothing. After that I started getting blue screens saying irql_not_less_or_equal which were followed by memory dump blue screens which i can't remember the error code for. These occured mainly when I tried to start norton on a scan.

In the meantime, the internet has gotten very slow.

I have run a memory test from the bios which came up with no errors and also ran the norton bootable recovery tool which showed no results. I have also used malware bytes to run a scan to no avail and a clamscan from a linux boot to detect things but everything has come up clean

I think there's something wrong because the internet is still really slow where as before there was no lag in response times. This occurs both at home and at university so I'm pretty sure it's not my connection.

Also, microsoft occasionally reports that norton autoprotect is off, and at some point when I checked it was off in the norton window, but that problem has also gone away (suspiciously?)

What further things can I try to do? Is this a rookit or something more malicious?

The blue screens seem to have stopped for now.

Thanks,

Blitz

Re: Blue screens and norton errors

1. It is worth googleing blue screen viewer. Then you should be able to view the info generated.

2. Please post your operating system and release

3. run a full check disk, like chkdsk /r /f

4. NPE can be run with different settings. I doubt it is rootkit from what you have described so far.

5. You should clear out cache, temporary files via both IE and by using commands from a command window or using WIndows explorer.

6. Check your clock and check that no games or other software changing it.

Re: Blue screens and norton errors

Hi cgoldman,

Thanks for the speedy reply!

1. Could you recommend a reliable, easy to use blue screen viewer?

2. I am using Windows 7 SP1

3. I will run the disk check tomorrow morning and post asap

4. I have now cleared the cache of both IE and Chrome (my main browser)

5. I don't think there are any programs changing the clock, how would I make sure?

Thanks,

Blitzkrieg.

1. Blue Screen viewer from nirsoft.net it is under system utilities.

5. When you next have an issue, just check your clock's date.

Re: Blue screens and norton errors

I am running Norton 360 on a Dell Inspiron 1525 with Vista SP2. Started having BSOD errors PAGE FAULT IN NON-PAGED AREA. Attributed the BSOD to a non-OEM battery and replaced with original battery. After that, laptop would restart but would not remain stable, now additional BSODs MEMORY MANAGEMENT and IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL. Uninstalled Norton 360 and everything ran fine & dandy (but not able to practice safe surfing). Downloaded and installed Avast! and STILL no crashes. I would much prefer to have Norton 360 reinstalled but I am sick of the downtime and headache of troubleshooting. I spent about an hour last night waiting for a tech to come online in chat so I could get everything fixed but got tired of waiting. Is there a fix I can apply and be done with it?
