Blue/white screen when scanning

I've just signed up to this forum and so hope that I am in the correct thread for this topic.

When my computer is on -  and particularly after doing a Norton scan or background task - the screen just goes white or blue and none of the keys work; I have to turn off the PC and let it start up again. Then, when it reappears the Norton icon won't work or disappears completely until I do a restart. Frustrating and time consuming. I've looked at different solutions (e.g. error checking) but it continues to happen most days. Can anyone suggest a permanent solution?

Thanks

JD

Re: Blue/white screen when scanning

What is your OS? What is your Norton product? What do you have your power settings set to? Are your graphic drivers up to  date? Are you running any other security products?

Re: Blue/white screen when scanning

I upgraded to Windows 10 some months back. Norton 360  v.22.8.0.50. Just checked graphic drivers and date (as written) is 10/13/15 and "no problems" shown in box (had to look up how to do this one!). Not using any other security products.

Thanks for replying.

Re: Blue/white screen when scanning

What ever model graphics card you have you need to go to that manufactures website and get the latest drivers. You can go into device manager and find your graphics card. Then right click on it and update driver. Your problem is unrelated to Norton. A simple Google search pulls up lots of others with the issue. Is your pc asleep or just locked up? Do have Windows spotlight or a picture set on your lock screen? Have you checked your manufacturer for all the latest graphic and monitor drivers? You should be able to upgrade to Norton Security over Norton 360. Is this a laptop or desktop? What are your power settings set to?

Re: Blue/white screen when scanning

I'll look into this tomorrow for driver update. When the blue/white screen appears there is nothing else on the screen and keyboard is immobilized; there is always a constant whirring on the desktop as though something is happening in the background but the only option is to shut down completely and restart. I've waited for a while on a number of occasions to see if something happens but nothing. Thanks.

Re: Blue/white screen when scanning

Is Norton running a full scan when this occurs? Are you running a screen saver? What are your power settings set to? When your pc is normal open up the task manager and see what is running and consuming the most power. You can disable background tasks also temporally. So you are not using your pc at the time? Like you walk away from it for an hour and come back then see this problem? When your pc is at idle there are tons of things going on. Not just Norton back round tasks. I see that white box myself after my computer is at rest. I have back round tasks set to 5 minutes. This will take some trouble shooting on your part. Again what are your power settings set to? Turn off monitor in 5 minutes? 10 minutes? Sleep in 20 minutes? Try changing those around. What are your pc specs? Do you have enough ram to run several things at once? I know I asked a lot of questions but until everything is addressed it is hard to diagnose. You see that white box and Norton saying "running background tasks" and it makes you think that Norton is the issue. Are you running any sort of automatic maintenance program? Such as a backup program or a tune up program? You may need to disable certain tasks to see what is causing the issue.

Re: Blue/white screen when scanning

Thanks for all responses.

I've checked everything suggested as best I could. Everything is up to date in Windows and drivers as far as I can ascertain. Nothing in the background taking up loads of space or memory.

Alas, when reading an article on the Microsoft site a few minutes ago the screen just went white!; it is not a white box: the whole screen goes white and blank and I cannot operate any key or the mouse. I have turned the monitor off and on when this occurs and the acer logo shows before the screen goes completely white and blank again. I have to switch off the pc and when I restart the page that disappeared into the white screen reappears. It doesn't happen on a particular site and can have happened after I've left computer for a few minutes. From what I've read it's called the 'blue/white screen of death' and no obvious solution (other than getting a new pc!). Anyway, for the time being I will just have to put up with it.

Re: Blue/white screen when scanning

This has happened to me on another laptop. Only happens when browsing with Google Chrome. I unchecked "use hardware acceleration" and it seemed to fix it. As I said this is not a Norton issue. It has a lot to do with Windows 10 and the Windows 10 Anniversary update. Try doing what I suggested in the Chrome settings.
