Boot Time Protection causing issues in Windows 10

If the 'Boot Time Protection' option is set to 'Normal', Windows 10 gets stuck on the Sign-in screen. If it does get through the Sign-in screen, then everything gets completely stuck and you can't do anything. I used to have 'Boot Time Protection' set to 'Normal' in Windows 8.1 and never had such issue.

Re: Boot Time Protection causing issues in Windows 10

Hello

Are you now using it as off? Experiment with all 3 settings and see which works the best for you. Each computer is made differently and has different software and different hardware. Thanks.

Re: Boot Time Protection causing issues in Windows 10

It took me a while to boot the Windows and then turn off that setting. There is no third-party software causing that issue. I had a clean install of Windows 10 without any third-party software. So basically, Norton Security with that setting "On" has an issue with Windows 10.

Re: Boot Time Protection causing issues in Windows 10

It is standart situation. W8/8.1 and W10 have ELAM and Norton use ELAM, item in Norton's settings list : "ELAM Protection". If Norton use ELAM, it mustn't use something yet at the same time. 2 different settings item - 2 different technology for one task. There is meaning use "Boot Time Protection" onto W7 and older.

Hello CorvusCorax47

So If Elam Protection is On, then Boot Time Protection should be Off?  If Boot Time Protection is ON, then it would conflict with Elam Protection if ON?

Is that correct?

Thanks.

RE: W8.1 ~ Norton allows me to set Boot Time Protection as Aggressive with ELAM On.
Boot Time Protection Off does not mean Off as you know.  Off simply mean Boot Time Protection by time delay.  So, with Boot Time at Aggressive does BTP bump ELAM or perhaps Norton manages.  As you know Norton has Intelligent Boot Time Protection.

Re: Boot Time Protection causing issues in Windows 10

hi S Malik

I don't know if this helps.

When first installing Windows 10 I received a notification by way of the notification slider that there was no Firewall turned on then asked to turn either Windows or Norton on then asked if I trusted Norton. Norton was already turned on with the Firewall and AV working.

After Windows 10 had been installed for a day or two no notification was received, Norton appears to be the first program to open and the Norton symbol is in the working programs section of the Task Bar as soon as the desktop appears. This may be related to the very recent updates Microsoft installed.

It does seem that Windows 10 needs a short period of time to settle down and seems to be learning as it is running.

On my Surface tablet once signed in everything, the programs starting and the desktop appearing is almost instantaneous so it is difficult to test this on there but, on my laptop there appears to be little difference , if any, whichever setting is used for Boot Time Protection.

Re: Boot Time Protection causing issues in Windows 10

On my two Win10 machines I have Boot Time Protection set to Aggressive but Early Launch Anti-Malware Protection is grey and set to off.  I can't even click the "?" on the right hand side of this setting.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Re: Boot Time Protection causing issues in Windows 10

My Boot Time Protection is set to Normal and I have no problem with startup of Windows 10 Home version.

However, as Krusty remarked, the Early Launch Anti-Malware Protection is greyed out and set to off and cannot be changed. Maybe someone from Norton could comment on that ?

Re: Boot Time Protection causing issues in Windows 10

The description of the two settings is similar although not by any means exactly the same perhaps somebody from Norton could let us know the difference and if one over rides the other depending on which OS is installed.

Re: Boot Time Protection causing issues in Windows 10

"Boot Time Protection" is a product behavioral selection (option) totally unto (confined to) your Norton product itself - while ELAM is a Microsoft OS convention that, given the installed security product's capability to support ELAM, allows an OS implemented "extension" pathway, permitting post-IPL, pre-OS primitives initiate, security insertion. ELAM requires very specific and precise "MS extension rule" adherence, else-wise the OS will not allow the extension insertion to operate...

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/dn265157%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

As such, I'd expect that there could be numerous possible "mitigating dependency" factors involved with the option's suppression (greyed-out within Norton products settings). I can say however, that it does work so long as everything is basically "happy" - Finding out what may be making it "unhappy", well - that's the trick...

John

No, these technologies do not conflict. "ELAM Protection" works before OS session, "Boot Time Protection" works in OS session, but before launching other programs. When Microsoft created ELAM for anti-viruses, anti-viruses got opportunity for launch before Operating System (W8/8.1, W10) and old technology for early launching became unmeaning for W8, W8.1, W10, but not for older systems, such as W7, Vista,XP. Norton support both protection method and, in W8/8.1/10 setting item "Boot Time Protection" is OFF, default!

Re: Boot Time Protection causing issues in Windows 10

Well, as I reported previously, my ELAM was greyed out and I was unable to turn it on.

I just looked again and now it is ON . The only thing I can think I did was a couple of restarts while checking some other software.

Another mystery I guess.

Re: Boot Time Protection causing issues in Windows 10

Same here on W10 32 bit. ELAM is grayed out. I have noted that it frequently becomes available on reboot and then automatically is grayed out after a few minutes of starting the machine. MOHAN G, PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THIS ISSUE WITH W10.
