Broken Norton Security Update Almost Breaks Windows 10 Installation and Uninstalls Norton Security!!!

The Date is February 1, 2018.

My computer is an HP Pavilion dv7 laptop with an Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz and 8 GB of RAM running Windows 10 Home, Version 1709, OS Build 16299.214.

As usual, I installed today's Live Updates for Norton Security before going on-line. However, the download for the Live Updates did not complete. In spite of this, I was prompted to restart my computer.

I restarted the computer, but nothing happened. By nothing, I mean that I was looking at a black boot-screen with the blue Windows 10 icon for ten minutes, with the cooling fan revving very loudly (not normal behaviour) and nothing else. No log-in screen. No OS. No HDD activity. Nothing.

After ten minutes, I pressed the power switch and the computer (immediately) powered off.

I restarted the computer again and it began boot-repair.

Upon FINALLY getting back into Windows 10, I discovered that Norton Security was gone. No, I didn't intentionally uninstall it. All I did was run Live Update and reboot as I was asked.

I tried to Re-Install Norton Security, but the NSDownloader wouldn't let me. I then tried the NRnR tool, but all that did was run in a loop uninstalling what was supposedly left of the previous Norton Security installation, rebooting, then re-installing Norton Security, rebooting, then uninstalling Norton Security, etc... Etc... Etc...

For almost ten years, I have paid money to Symantec in good faith for Norton software to protect my computer, and yet it would seem that what I have been paying for is protection courtesy of the Keystone Cops!

I do not know what has happened, but if you are going to release ANYTHING through Live Updates, please at the very least make sure it does not break the Windows installation!

Hello Hopscotch. Looking at the version of windows you stated is installed, Windows 10 Home, Version 1709, OS Build 16299.214  suggest that you have downloaded and installed Windows update KB4058258 . It has reported bugs which Microsoft has reported, and is specifically for a small number x86 and AMD powered machines. I just saw this update to my Intel based laptop and will report whether I see the issues you are seeing here with it is installed. My suggestions in your case are UNINSTALL this update and reboot the machine. Once done run live updates when you have your Norton product installed. If this isn't a solution that works, restore your machine to a previous time/date where this began to occur. Update your system and install your Norton product. Please let us know if these helped.

Re: Broken Norton Security Update Almost Breaks Windows 10 Installation and Uninstalls Norton Security!!!

Thanks for the heads-up!

Okay... apparently, nothing I could do would fix the problem and so, to be on the safe side, I tried to reproduce the problem.

I had to reformat my hard drive and run a clean install of Windows 10 (without allowing Windows Update). I then re-installed Norton Security and ran Live Update up to the one currently available. I was successfully able to exactly reproduce what I previously described and was unable to repair the Norton Security installation.

To make sure this was not a hardware issue, I installed Linux MInt 64-bit and it is running without a hitch. Now, I have since deleted Linux and installed vanilla Windows 7 64-bit with only Norton Security installed. Guess what?

The same problem has happened IN Windows 7.

Something in today's Live Update is breaking Norton Security and damaging something within Windows itself... and to make matters worse, Norton Remove and Reinstall goes into an unbreakable process loop.

Oh, well. Back to Linux for the time being.

One question I should have already asked is elementary but I will ask all the same. You are logging into your computer under and admin account? Windows 10 and 7 when you installed both?

Re: Broken Norton Security Update Almost Breaks Windows 10 Installation and Uninstalls Norton Security!!!

Hello again. Installing KB4058258 on both my AMD powered machines, I did so on my Quad-core machine BEFORE updating it to NSNU 22.12.0.104. I only had one small issue where two NSBU icons appeared in the system tray after the last reboot for the windows update. Once rebooted I ran live updates and installed version 104 of NSBU. No issues afterwards.

On my HP Zambezi 6 core machine I did the exact opposite. I installed NSBU 22.12.0.104 and rebooted. Then installed KB4058258. The update has FAILED 3 times with error 0x80073715. For the latter machine I am foregoing this update waiting for when the next cumulative windows updates are released based on the following article below.

Re: Broken Norton Security Update Almost Breaks Windows 10 Installation and Uninstalls Norton Security!!!

The initial (current Windows Update) Windows 10 install had an Administrator account and one (secured/restricted feature) guest account. The second attempt was with a (no Windows Update allowed) vanilla install of Windows 10 was a single-user account. The attempt with a (no Windows Update allowed) vanilla install of Windows 7 SP1 was a single-user account created using the original HP factory restore media. I wonder if this can be reproduced in VMWare/VirtualBox...

Re: Broken Norton Security Update Almost Breaks Windows 10 Installation and Uninstalls Norton Security!!!

Hopscotch Over the weekend I will setup a test VM on one of my servers that is sitting idled and test that theorem. Last night a friend reported in a convo with me one of their family members had gotten all the required update for their windows machine some time ago. And have waited for the new Norton installation to become available after 103 was pulled twice. They installed NSBU 22.12.0.104 and it immediately bricked their machine. I will be letting the team know that we have another issue with a cause yet undetermined definitively as being a Norton issue or Windows update breaking things again.

Re: Broken Norton Security Update Almost Breaks Windows 10 Installation and Uninstalls Norton Security!!!

Same thing here. Running Windows 10, ver 1709 16299.214 with KB4058258 installed.

This night I have updated to NSBU 22.12.0.104, no other changes done.

Today two unexpected Windows restarts and one blue screen!

Yeah, better team fixes issue or I will have to uninstall NS from all of my machines.

ettore

What driver or file was listed in the Blue Screen?

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Broken Norton Security Update Almost Breaks Windows 10 Installation and Uninstalls Norton Security!!!

I was not at my PC when the problem occurred first time.

At any rate in the event viewer this is logged as a critical event origin: Kernel-Power.

Further information about the problem, ID bucket: AV_Netwtw04!txScdSendCompleteCb.

The latest one makes me thinking is something related to my Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 8250 drivers.

The PC where the issue occurred to is a notebook ASUS ROG 752. Never got a problem with it.

Today things seem normal.

Hello Ettore First, uninstall KB4058258, AND disable "fast boot" on your system then reboot. Try to reproduce the BSOD. You also may want to download the current AC8250 drivers directly from ASUS since they are your OEM. Intel has a driver download for these as well : https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/90141/Intel-Wireless-8000-Series
