Bytefence. Good or bad?

Recently, I somehow downloaded Bytefence to the system and it convinced me that it is capable of taking care of it. It took several scans, found something 'unwanted' and then offered me to buy its license. Before I entered my credit card details, I googled its name and came across with such guide, and similar posts. Norton is also detecting it. Who is right and who is wrong?

Re: Bytefence. Good or bad?

Josh this sort of stuff gets downloaded "bundled" with other software, mainly the free junk that is out there. Although not specifically malware its nothing more than a copy cat program, you are well served to remove it immediately.

  • since, you don't know how you got bytefence.......get rid of bytefence
  • there are better alternatives for free second opinion scanner
  • prevention is better than detection

Re: Bytefence. Good or bad?

Well I am sure that I always take all precautions to prevent such bundles on my computer. However, I must agree that bytefence got inside without my knowledge. Definitely removing it, thanks!

Re: Bytefence. Good or bad?

SoulAsylum, following your recommendation, I decided to remove it. However, I was clearly fooled by its professional looks because some of its parts failed to leave my computer! While I managed to uninstall it normally (via Task Manager), it was a pain to change my search engine from Yahoo (Bytefence somehow brought it to my browsers) to Google. Only reset helped to fix everything.

Once again, thanks for advice!
