Can I disable Norton TEMPORARILY?

Can I disable this temporarily without uninstalling?
A snapshot is attached of Norton and it is always running at the top of the processes taking up most of the disk speed. I don't know if 20MB/sec is a lot but it's always taking more disk bandwidth than anything else.
I know you folks say Norton does not slow down your PC but this PC has started to grind.
I'd like to run a test without Norton running, but I'm afraid uninstalling means I will lose my bakup sets and other settings.
Can it be disabled temporarily?
Is there anything else you can suggest to improve speed?
Is my hard drive failing coincidentally with the Norton install?
Is 20MB/sec not a lot?
