Re: can I download mcafee site advisor if I already have Norton internet security 2009 on that computer?

Hi GreatNate1312,

McAfee SiteAdvisor technology is a free download that tests Web sites for spyware, spam, viruses and phishing, helps you in identifying trusted Web sites. But, if you have Norton Internet Security 2009, I don't think there is a need for Site Advisor as the Identity Safe component(Phishing Protection) of NIS 2009 does the same job.

The Phishing Protection helps to identitify pharming/fraud Web sites and protect your computer by blocking the access. Phishing Protection guards online attempts to steal your personal information by blocking fraudlent websites and verifies trusted ones. There are two technologies integrated into the NIS toolbar to identify whether a site is a phishing site. Every site is checked through a blacklist of phishing sites that is updated multiple times per day. In addition, given the dynamic nature of these sites, Norton also analyzes the page with advanced heuristics to detect new phishing sites that are brand new and Symantec has never seen before. So, there is no need for another toolbar(Mcafee Site Advisor) to do the same work. There is no known conflicts in using Site Advisor along with NIS 2009, but sometimes it may slow up the Internet connectivity as each Web page may be analyzed by two different tools(Site Advisor & Phishing Protection) at the same time.

Symantec Safe Web currently in its beta phase, is built on top Norton Internet Security 2009, which performs many of the same functions as McAffee’s SiteAdvisor. Safe Web requires Norton Internet Security 2009 to run on the user’s computer. This differs from McAfee’s SiteAdvisor offering, which is a standalone plug-in for Internet Explorer, and a Firefox extension that is also compatible with the Macintosh. But Symantec is taking it one step further, allowing users themselves to submit reviews and alerts through its Community Watch program, which speeds the notification process. It is also impossible to give you a good opinion in between Site Advisor and Safe Web as Safe Web is still in it's Beta phase.

As I posted earlier, Norton Safe Web allow users to submit reviews and alerts themselves through its Community Watch program, which speeds the notification process. May be, the sites which you have googled for free screensavers, was not submitted as harmful one to Symantec by any of the users till now. If you are sure that the particular Web site is dangerous or seems to be dangerous from your point of view, you can help Symantec by providing your valuable feedback/reviews for those sites. Symantec encourages it's users to become active participants in the community by creating an account and submitting user reviews based on their experience with any site on the Web. Symantec will analyze those Web sites and provide ratings accordingly. This may also help Symantec in identifying similar Web pages and to provide updates for those sites in future.

N.I.S. 2009 will also automatically Submit Suspicous Web Sites to symantec Security Response.  You can also Submit them manually by going to a Suspicuous Web Site and Clicking on the "Norton" on the Toolbar.

I would not advise having the McAfee Site Advisory on your computer when you have the Anti-Phishing in N.I.S. 2009 as there will be conflicts if you have two of them on at the same time; if you Turned off the Norton Anti-Phishing and installed McAfee Security Advisory, you should be okay, however, Norton Internet Security 2009 is a good Product.

oh yeah dont get me wrong Norton internet security is by far the most pwerful and effective peice of antivirus antispyare and firewall product on the market today its just that I know people who have donloaded free screensavers from those sites and got things like trojan horse or heavy spyware, anyay those saf marks will probably change into dangerouse sooner or later due to the fact that the community can take control and see how bad those websites really are, thanks!

I'm sure the Norton Safe Web team at Symantec would be interested in hearing what you didn't like about their product. They have a forum setup here exactly for that type of feedback:

http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&thread.id=29580

How can they make it better if you don't tell them what's wrong with it?

That was the "problem", I think.

Site advisor is horrible and unrealible. Use WOT. It will actually block web pages. I use along with Norton Safe Surf. These programs do not run in real time so its fine.

Norton Anti-Phishing Blocks Web Sites also - Fake Ones, that is.

However, in N.I.S. 2008, it would Block a Suspicious Web Page, but, in N.I.S. 2009, it lets you visit a Suspicious Web Page, but would Submit it Automatically behind your "back".  Why has symantec changed this?  It makes sense to Block Spurious Web Pages, but giving the option to Visit that Web Page if you know 100% that it is not Fake.

WOT works a lot better. I have tried several porn sites a d Norton lets me in with no warning or else alittle pop up. WOT gives you a great big black page block alert. Lets you know that the site is really dangerous. Try it yourself. I can PM you some links to see WOT in action.

As I mentioned in my last Post, this is what Norton does, with regard to a full-Page Warning; although, symantec - for some un-known and bizare reason - has changed this for Suspicious Web Pages.  I assume it still does this - the Full-Page Warning - if you access a Fake Web Site.

P.M. me if you wish.
