Can someone explain how this happens

So today I logged into linkedin from my laptop and my vpn is running.  Usually i connect with my phone.  Later I receive a notification that my linkedin account had been logged into from a different device and states that the associated ip address is from my actual home town.  How can that be?  I would have expected the physical location cited would be the vpn server location.  I'm not confident that the vpn is working.

You need to change your DNS settings so that you do not use your ISP DNS servers. That is where the local info is coming from.

Just Google "Public DNS servers" and "how to change windows settings for DNS" and do some reading. It is easy to change but make sure you are aware of everything first before jumping in.

What server is showing up in the leak? Is it from your ISP or is it from some other local server?

All: The Norton VPN is well known for leaking IPv6. If your ISP is not demanding that you need it, do as I have. Disable it at the router level. Change your router DNS to the DNS settings of choice and restart the router and computer at the same time.
