Can you get a virus from watching a YouTube video?

Hello! Can you get a virus or any type of PUP, grayware, or infection from just watching a YouTube video. Not clicking on ads, links etc. Like basicly not clicking on anything, just watching the video.

Thank you!

aren3000 You wouldn't normally get a virus, PUP, PUA or other malware just watching the video. This is UNLESS you do not have updated FlashPlayer or JAVA installed which would be avenues of exploit. Norton will still stop the malicious code from running anyways.

Aren, in addition to what Soul says, and as you point out, one of the major hazards is blindly clicking on links which may or may not be malicious.

Uninstall Java unless you need (disable, when not used) >

Test your Flash Player install >

(uninstall Flash Player, unless you need & disable, when not used).

FWIW ~ YMMV

Is https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html the offical Adobe website? Because I went to its main page https://helpx.adobe.com and 1/66 on VirusTotal. Also, I have an Acer computer I do not have Java installed. Is that ok?

I do not have Java installed.  I do not need Java.
I rarely use Flash Player.  I keep Flash Player updated.

VirusTotal 1/66 = False Positive.
You asked about Flash Player.

Ok, so when you go to helpx.adobe.com (which I belive is the home page) it redirects you to the support page or something which  has the 1/66. So I just want to be 100% sure it is a False Positive. helpx.adobe.com is an offical adobe page correct?

Okay, just making sure. Phew, its a false positive. Okay thanks!

1/66 strongly suggests False Positive.

  • Detection by one engine suggests False Positive.
  • Detection by one engine suggests 65 engines are wrong.
  • Detection by one engine suggests 65 engines have not updated.

In this case.  I'm strongly confident 1/66 is FP.

OK, thanks! Last question, is https://helpx.adobe.com/support.html#/top_products legit? Is it safe? Because when I go to https://helpx.adobe.com is re-directs me right there. Thank you!

Re: Can you get a virus from watching a YouTube video?

All: The official site for versions of Windows that do not have flash player managed by windows update is here: https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer

The redirect you are seeing is due to windows 10 if you are using it, since it manages updates to flash player through windows updates: https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/flash-player-issues-windows-10-ie.html
