cannot acess N.I.S 2009

Hi,I accidently switched off my computer before i could shut down and now for some strange reason I cannot acess my N.I.S 2009 although from what i can tell, it still can scan files, scan my computer(by schedual)and even the firewall works.

So i'm stumped at what to do because I would still like access to it.

So in a nutshell it still works its just that i cannot acess it in any way.

Some assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Re: cannot acess N.I.S 2009

Hi Knoks -

Did you try accessing it from the Program Group? Give it a shot.

If no go, uninstall it via add/remove programs and re-install from this link - Here.

You might need your Product Key for the install.

If you can't locate it let me know what Operating System you are using and I will point you to the Key file.

Thanks

Re: cannot acess N.I.S 2009

What do you mean by switched off? Did you simply unplug the computer? What was the computer doing at the time it was switched off? Hopefully the reinstall will correct whatever problems there may be because of this.

Let us know the results of the reinstall.

Re: cannot acess N.I.S 2009

Hi Knoks,

I hope that you are unable to start the NIS 2009 eventhough you see the icon and scheduled scan works. Click Start > Run, type services.msc and click OK. From the list of services, locate Norton Internet Security service and check whether it is set to Started/Automatic. If it is already started, right-click on that service and select Restart. If it is not started, right-click on that service, select Properties, set the startup type to Automatic, Start the service and click OK. Then restart the computer and check whether you can access NIS 2009. Let us know how it goes.

Hi Yogesh -

Thanks for the info. It is worth a try before doing a reinstall.

Re: cannot acess N.I.S 2009

Knoks,

Looks like your system has corrupted Window's internal structure lists.  Please follow the following and at least correct those errors and then we will move on if necessary.  Thanks.

1. Temporarily disable the WMI service (Windows management instrumentation) in: Start >Run > type: services.msc and in there find/stop WMI

2. Next delete the C:\windows\system32\wbem\repository folder's continents (do not delete the folder just the files inside), wait for it to recreate (can take a bit of time, usually this takes around 10 ~ 15 minutes but I have seen it take 30+ minutes), be patient

3. Restart the WMI service & restart the computer

Write back with results.  Thanks again.

Re: cannot acess N.I.S 2009

Well i dont know how but i can now use the N.I.S 2009 but i have to open it in the task bar.The shortcut i still cannot use and everytime i try to open it from the files it says:

The item 'uiStub.exe' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly.

Do you want to delete this shortcut?

So im stumped again but the good thing is i can atleast acess it.

Re: cannot acess N.I.S 2009

Please make sure the desktop shortcut is pointing to the correct location.  You can edit the schortcut by right clicking on it and choosing Properties.

Make sure this is pointing to the corecct location now.

Re: cannot acess N.I.S 2009

i checked and it is in the correct place. It says:"C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.0.0.125\uiStub.exe" and if i try to click on on compatibility or security or general it says:The folder "C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.0.0.125\uiStub.exe" specified in the start In box is not valid.Make sure that the folder exists and the path is correct.

Re: cannot acess N.I.S 2009

Hi Knoks -

Try opening NIS 2009 from your Program Group, as per my original post.

If that works, you could then just delete the desktop icon by simply highlighting it and press delete.

To create a new Desktop Shortcut, right click on the one in your NIS Program Group, called Norton Internet Security and click on Send To and then click Desktop (create shortcut.)

It will then appear on your desktop.

Please let us know.

Thanks.

Re: cannot acess N.I.S 2009

Knoks:

Your uiStub.exe is pointing to the wrong version.  If you notice in the picture that Dbrisendine showed, the correct version is 16.5.0.134 or 135 depending on when you updated your Norton.  Please check under Help & Support> about  in your Norton main screen to determine your actual version.  When you find it, you will need to go to your shortcut, browse and change the 16.0.0.125 to  the correct version.

Hi

You can open the properties of the shortcut like in the screenshot above and change the "target" and "start in" locations. The click "Apply" etc.

Re: cannot acess N.I.S 2009

i'm having the same problem but when i try to change the target location, start in, and even try clicking on the other tabs like compatability, all i'd ever get is a window pop up saying The folder 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Norton Internet Security Engine\16.0.0.125' specified in the Start In box is not valid. Make sure that the folder exist and the path is correct.

much appreciations forthe help

Re: cannot acess N.I.S 2009

Go to "My computer">c:>program files>Norton Internet Security>Engine. The engine should have the latest version of 16.5.0.135. Double click on that to expand the file.  Down near the bottom you will find uiStub.  Right click on it, create shortcut, and drag the second one out to your desktop.

Probably the easiest method.  If you find another engine number other than what is listed above, please get back to us.

Re: cannot acess N.I.S 2009

first off idk what the (x84) is. its a new comp that i just got yesterday, what i do know is that when i was oredering it online it asked if i wanted the 640 gb harddrive and in parenthesis it said (performance) so like a gullible kid i got it. but ya the whole shortcut thing worked, thank you very much for that. the only other thing i have left is that when i open my start menu and click on any of my norton stuff all i still get is that window that says "the item 'uiStub.exe' that this shortcut refers to has been changed, or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly" Do you want to delete this shortcut?" do i just delete the ones in my start menu and forget about them or is there a way to resolve this issue. thank you once again for the quick intelligent replies

Re: cannot acess N.I.S 2009

What version do you have of Norton?  If you can get the main screen to open then the version number is located under Help & Support > About.  It may be something like 16.5.0.134 or 135.

Click on START and go to the Norton program group.  Expand it and right click on each listing; choose Properties.  In the Target box, edit the text there from say \16.0.0.125\ to the version number you saw in the About box; \16.5.0.135\ .  Then click OK.  Do this for each item in the Norton start menu.

Re: cannot acess N.I.S 2009

ya i finally saw the problem, the version that was typed in in mines said 125 and i changed it to 135. thanks for that. another problem is that i had already accidently gotten rid of the shortcut that was for liveupdate, and the icon for the main norton is some weird file looking icon. i'm pretty sure you got the solution for this problem also. thank you much for all the help so far.

Re: cannot acess N.I.S 2009

Go to START > Norton Internet Security and expand the group.  Right click on the Norton Internet Security menu item and choose COPY.  Then right click on the main Norton Internet Security list (above all the others we are working on) and choose paste.  Right click on the one just pasted and select Properties.  To change the icon, click on Change Icon... and browse to find the uiStub.exe file.  Here is the rest of the Live Update settings; you can manually edit these.

Notice the /lu on the Target line.

To correct the icon for NIS, browse for settings.dll instead of uistub.exe.  Then choose the proper icon.
