Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

After right clicking the icon on the task bar, I noticed that 'disable antivirus auto protect" is greyed out and I can't enable it. Rebooted several times with no avail.

Please advice.

Hello ameneses54

What Norton product are you using and what version is it? What o/s and sp and what bit.? What browser?

I had the same after a recent Windows update, had to turn off the laptop before NS av would activate.

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

Actually, as it's grayed out, what I can't do is disable antivirus auto-protect  At the moment I suppose it's activated--which is troubling.

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

Hi ameneses54,

Please go to Settings > Antivirus > Automatic Protection Tab and see if any settings there are also grayed out and if there is a statement close to the bottom of that page as follows:

If that statement appears, you need to restart your system in order to complete a cleanup from a previous detection.   Once that is accomplished, things should return to normal.

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

Hello

Since you are using win 8/8.1, please turn off or disable Fast Startup. Norton and many other products needs a complete shutdown in order to work and install properly. Please shut down and restart with Fast Startup turned off and see if things improve.

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

Yes the tabs are grayed out and  the statement you refer to about the pending remediation is there. I have restarted the system multiple times and the problem persists. What do you mean by " in order to complete a cleanup from a previous detection."?

Please advice.

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

If Norton detects anything it will try to fix it, remove it, or quarantine it.  In some cases in order to complete the fix (finish cleaning it up), you system needs to be shut down and restarted so that Norton can basically have the portion that requires the fix stopped and then restarted.

Have you followed floplot's suggestion in regards to Win 8?  Perhaps the following info will assist.

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

Hello

If turning off Fast Startup doesn't help, there is probably some program that you have which is causing some conflict with Norton Security . Some have found that IOBit software or the uninstaller for that program causes it. I can't remember off hand what the other causes were. John's 2nd link is the thread that I am thinking of that has several users who have this problem or who had the problem.

Hello,

I removed IOBit uninstaller, rebooted and only momentarily the problem was gone, only to recur in minutes.

Have not tried the rapid boot, but I find it unrelated as the problem never appeared last year.

Please advice

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

Hello ameneses54

Please take a look at that 2nd link. The different users in that thread had different programs which they found to be causing it. You may have more than 1 program or part of a program that is causing it. Look to see how they found the programs. Even posting in that thread may get you some ideas or help also.

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

There are hundreds of links to the problem. I'd expect Symantec to give me proper support and just let me spend hours on end trying to make the program work as it should.

I'm waiting for a solution or a refund

Please try it - as we have seen, regardless of how long things run smoothly, conditions may change after any update, be it Windows Update, Norton update or even another program's update (such as IObit).   By trying it, it will assist us in troubleshooting your situation, and if it does not help, then we know for sure that is not the cause.

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

I did as instructed. Disabling fast boot does not help at all.

Like I told you, if I reboot it only solves the problem momentarily.

Please advise.

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

Plse remember that this a user to user forum, with only some Symantec employees looking at the threads.

The second link was the problem of @pegas and my problem. @pgas uses IOBit Uninstaller and his problem is gone now.

I use AIDA64 and another user has ASUS Wireless LAN Control Manager, which still are the culprit. The last page of the thread is the most interesting, so you can omit the rest.

There must be some startup program which causes the problem in NS. The procedure to investigate is written in the thread. To increase the pressure, it would be wise, I think, that you drop your problem in that thread also. That thread is followed by Symantec employees.

Symantec support took several dumps of my system, acknowledged the problem and is still working on it.

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

Hi Hugo,

It's possible that the OP's primary concern on this matter is over whether or not they are currently fully protected...

Based on the messages posted in your (and @pegas) thread, it is my current understanding is that with this situation protection is actually fully enabled, but due to these conflicts with other program applications, it cannot be manually (even temporarily) disabled?  Please correct me if my interpretation is incorrect.

Cheers!

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

Where is the "NS GUI" in order to try and turn in off?

Kudos0

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

@avjohnnie : That's the whole idea of blocking this setting. While full protection keeps running, it blocks certain settings, because a more or less suspicious activity by another process is detected. This not a good condition, so it has to be corrected by Symantec. They are working on it, as I said. Maybe a solution in the next rlse?
In the mean time i excluded AIDA64 in Antivirus settings, so NS doesn't react on it anymore.

@ameneses54 : NS Gui is the main screen of NS, displayed clicking the NS-icon. From there you can click Settings at the top and look at the Antivirus settings. The top 3 are greyed out, if it's the same problem as ours.

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

Hello Hugo

John and I tried to get the O/P to read and post in your thread, but it seems like he doesn't want to go through the process to figure out what program(s) is causing the problem, but just wants it fixed.

Hello amen

If this greyed out setting has just started in the last few days, is there a program that is new or just had an update in the last few days?

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

I don't think any recent program could be the cause. The latest one I installed is Acronis True Image which is vital to me.

Kudos0

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

It depends on how long it took you to notice the greyed out areas as to how recent. Try putting Acronis into the areas so Norton won't see those files.  Settings>Antivirus>Scans and Risks>Exclusions/Low Risks>Items to Exclude from Scans>Configure>Items To Exclude from Auto-Protect, Sonar, and Download Intelligence Protection>Configure. I think you can put the whole folder in there as a test. You can still use the program even if in those places. .

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

@floplot : It's clear it isn't solved right yet and we have to wait till Symantec fixes it. As it's not a directly threatening problem, the priority is medium, I was told.

I think O/P may have the problem longer than he thinks, but did not see it, because the Norton icon stays green. We talked a lot about that in the thread. It will still be interesting to find out, which program is the culprit.
A more or less automatic update of an existing program can also be the cause.

My 2 cents on that. I rest my case for now.

I have excluded Acronis True Image from antivirus and sonar. I'll keep everybody posted if this maneuver seems to work.

Thanks

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

Excluding Acronis True Image both from Sonar and and antivirus detection doesn't work. The problem persists and I really want some help. When I reboot it helps only momentarily.

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

Hello ameneses54,

I thought i made clear that there is no solution at this moment; plse. look a few posts back. Symantec is working on it and it has medium priority, because it no real securty risk.
In normal operation it is really not necessary to deactivate Antivirus (I hardly come across it, anyway), so then there is no real problem.

If you still have a need and are willing to read the last page of 'my' thread, you can act upon the procedure to find the culprit program and then exclude the found program in Antivirus settings.

If you can produce a list of all your auto-startup programs in Windows and via Task Manager, maybe we can give you an advice which program it could be.

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

I'll just have to wait until symantec deals and identifies the problem. For the moment, when I have to run a file which I know Norton would intercept, I will have to boot into safe mode. As you may understand (without getting into details) not all things are what they appear to be and through this analogy I'm implying viruses.

v 22.2.0.31 did not help me, link https://community.norton.com/en/comment/6315801#comment-6315801

In my case a WLAN Controller from ASUS was the incompatible system; what program caused your issue?

There might be several reasons for these grayed controls; pegas and ameneses54 have reported that the issue did resolve by itself (v22.1.0.9), cskwatra tells that v22.2 was a fix, and I still have the problem (both versions).

@John. In my case, Sonar was detecting a false positive in the background scanning and was not generating any alert or action for the same. The issue was resolved with the update after I excluded the file after the same was quarantined.

Re: Cannot enable anti virus auto protect

Hello cskwatra

Did you send that file to Symantec as a false positive so it can be analyzed further. If it's a good file, then they will correct the file detections?

Please use this link if you think that a file is a false positive:
https://submit.symantec.com/dispute/

If there is a possibility that the file might be infected, please submit it to Symantec using this link:

Another alternative which is fast you can use Virus Total

(Thanks to Yaso for providing the links)

Please come back and let us know how you made out, if you hear anything from the false positive Team. Thanks.
