Cannot install 360 2 due to "another installer running"

My problem started today when Norton unexpectedly shut down for no reason. I couldn't re-start it, so I decided "now is the time to install the 360 v 2 files which I downloaded a month ago". The 360 - 2 installation started OK, then got to the "uninstalling previous version of 360" and unexpectedly closed down giving me a windows error message halfway through. I clicked "send error message" and it cam back telling me that i had a "blue screen error". I tried to re-install my stored 360 - 2 files and I got an error message telling me the files were corrupt and advised me to download new files. Without my live-updater links, I could't find the 360-2 files to download on symantec, so I took another course of action;

I reset my PC to yesterday's date, with the intention of running a fresh installation from my original 360 disc. It got part way through the installation then I got a message telling me that V 2 was available to download - would I like it, so I clicked yes, download. The files appeared to download successfully, but the next stage of installation halted abrubtly with the symantec error message " cannot install due to another installer running, please try later".

So, I cannot re-load 360 from either disc, stored files or download due to the above error message. And looking at your advice copied in below, I CANNOT uninstall the orignal 360 because program remover CANNOT LOCATE THE FILES.

End result, I have NO Norton security installed and NO WAY to get it installed.

Please tell me how I get round this.

THanks

Alan

Scotland.

Installation may fail if installing over a previous build:

Known Issue: Installation may fail if you install over a previous beta build.

Soultion: Uninstall the previous build before installing the new build.

We are already aware of these issues, and will have them fixed by the time the software is released.

Alan -- I see you are in Scotland. When you downloaded those files to update N360 to V2 did you download them from the UK site of Symantec or perhaps from the US/Canada site?

I ask because we have had some people reporting problems with fixes or updates and it has turned out that they had localized versions of Windows (Netherlands and Germany come to mind) but had downloaded the files from the US website which is very easy to do if you follow one of the links here or perhaps in other newsgroups.

Just a thought .....

Let us know about this.

There are some possible things to help you including using the Norton SymNRT tool to clean up corrupted situations. Another might be to go into Safe Mode and try to uninstall then.

BTW What version of Windows are you using? UK localized I presume <g>

Re: Cannot install 360 2 due to "another installer running"

I am running Windows XP SP3, PC bought in UK, supplied with XP installed ....(SP3 arrived via automatic update). As for Norton 360; Installed new from disc earlier this year, automatic updates offered me version 2 a month ago so I downloaded it - it came automatically once I clicked 'ok' - so I don't have a clue where it downloaded from !!! Hi Alan_l

Can you try this.

1. Download the latest version of N360 from here.

2. Run the Norton Removal Tool to clean up previously installed versions.

3. Install the latest version you have just downloaded.

Let us know, thanks!

Johna,

I'm reluctant to give anyone living outside the USA/Canada a link to a download site that does not include an indication (like "uk" or "de") that it is for their locality. The OP is in Scotland and as he has now posted is using a UK localized computer.

Since his download of the upgrade to V2 came through LiveUpdate I would expect it to be localized.

FWIW -- better safe than sorry.

Thanks for the information. That it came down through LiveUpdate should avoid the locality problem, one hopes! I would be inclined to delay trying Johna's suggestion until we know more about localization.

Now the holiday weekend is over I'll flag this for the Norton Staff who know more about upgrading and its problems than I do but you could try uninstalling in Safe Mode if you are comfortable with that -- there's usually a keyboard key you press early in bootup to invoke a menu of special startup modes, one of which is Safe mode with 2 or 3 variations like with networking etc. I'd be inclined to choose the simplest and navigate to Remove Programs to uninstall the N360. Then as Johna suggests run the Norton Removal Tool after you boot back into normal mode.

Shout if you have any questions.

Good advice re localization, however I made sure the link I provided for the download was in fact a direct link for downloading through live update, to account for the localization factor.

As far as using Remove Programs in safe mode, unfortunately this feature does not function in safe mode, in any case I would run the removal tool in normal mode as this should satisfactorily remove the program, and try the reinstall from there.

OK -- thanks for pointing out what I don't know! If Add/Remove Programs does not work in SAFE Mode, does Norton not have Uninstall as one of its menu items on the Start/Programs / Norton list which should work? This is a question not a statement? <g>

Given a mess I do believe it is best to get rid of it before trying a new install or update given the situation about two installers running?

No, neither setup nor uninstall can run in safe mode, no matter which way you try to perform the operation.

Indeed, this does seem to be a bit of a mess, but the SymNRT should clear most of this up, I think  Alan_l should try running the tool and the reinstall and see how it goes.

Hi Guys,

THanks for putting some thought into this, hopefully what you've suggested will do the trick.  I'm downloading 360 from the link provided right now, I'll get back to you once I've carried out your uninstall / reload suggestion.

Cheers

Re: Cannot install 360 2 due to "another installer running"

- Not good.  I downloaded and used the Norton removal tool for 360, the PC re-booted, I went to the brand new fresh download of Norton 360 200, clicked on it to run it and immediately got a Norton error message;

" Norton 360 Setup - The setup file is corrupt. please re-download and try again.  Setup will now exit "

Further suggestions?

Alan

Re: Cannot install 360 2 due to "another installer running"

That's interesting. Can you try re-downloading N360 from the same link and try again? We can then go from there. Thanks!
