Can't disable auto-protect: "pending remediation action"

Hello,

I have just installed NIS (22.5.0.124) onto a new laptop (Windows 7 x64) and all seemed to go smoothly. It did an initial scan and found a threat in a pre-installed copy of PowerDVD. I let it fix it and paid no more concern.

Now I need to disable auto-protect (to install some ancient CAD software) and "Disable Auto-Protect" is greyed out. If I go to Settings->Antivirus the options to disable Boot Time Protection (I set it to aggressive after install), Auto-Protect and Removable Media Scan are all greyed out with the explanation "These settings cannot be changed due to a pending remediation action. Restart your computer to resolve this issue". Several restarts have not resolved the issue.

I have NIS installed on numerous other Win7 machines (earlier versions of NIS) and haven't seen this before.

Does anyone have any suggestions ?

Thanks

Gary

Re: Can't disable auto-protect: "pending remediation action"

Hello gary271,
You have a conviction and you have greyed settings.  Logically, they're are related.
Then again.  They may not be.  Greyed settings is known reported issue without detected threat.
Greyed settings may have gone un-noticed...before detected threat.  All other appear as normal.
---------------------------------------------------
Well, if PowerDVD is related (and reboot does not sort grey) then you may need manual malware remediation.
If PowerDVD is not releated.  Then you'll need to Exclude Auto-Protect for the "trigger" that causes grey settings.
The "trigger" may be PowerDVD.
To date.  Norton Community has prompted Exclude Auto-Protect 'work around'.  As no fix from Norton.
Um, are you in Admin account...?

Re: Can't disable auto-protect: "pending remediation action"

Thanks.

The detection shows in history as fully resolved. Since I uninstalled that program, the detected file isn't there any more.

I don't know when the commands greyed out.

Is there any way you know of to determine which items (files ?) are pending mediation ? If I knew that I could look into removing the suspect program.

From the links to other threads you posted, it does seem that this is a problem that other people have seen.

Re: Can't disable auto-protect: "pending remediation action"

Yes - I am admin. PowerDVD is now uninstalled.

Presuming that PowerDVD detection was legit and removing PowerDVD sorted threat.

I've sorted grey settings as others.  By Excluding "trigger".
For me.  Trigger has been program that place Icon in tray near Norton Icon.
Trigger seems to be related to poor File Insight rating / Reputation.
I've had "trigger" that I was able to remove from Exclude once "trigger" acquires favorable stats.
Please review posted Community links.  Hopefully, that will offer insight into user experience re 'greyed'.

Re: Can't disable auto-protect: "pending remediation action"

OK - thanks - I'll keep searching for the trigger. Since it's a new PC there's not too much stuff on here

If I find the trigger, I'll post back to share the info

Re: Can't disable auto-protect: "pending remediation action"

Yes, if machine was established.  Then you'd be aware to (recent) activity.
And you're sure PowerDVD threat has been satisfied.  Is PowerDVD still in Quarantine. You may submit:  How to report false positives

OK... sorry for persisting.  If you somehow tripped / started PowerDVD.  Then remnants left by un-install.  Just cautious.   Perhaps, flag was innocent false positive.    Good luck.

Re: Can't disable auto-protect: "pending remediation action"

OK - I think I tracked it down. I searched for all .exe's in Program Files and looked at the File Insight until I found an untrusted one.

The PC is a GIGABYTE P37 and it was in the Gigabyte utilities group - a few of which are running at start-up. Excluded that folder and hey-presto the options are no longer unavailable.

I don't know if I'd call this a bug as such. It seems that NIS found untrusted programs running and planned to do something about them but never could. It would have been very helpful though if it had told me which specific items were pending remediation.

Thanks for your help - I'd never have found it otherwise.

Re: Can't disable auto-protect: "pending remediation action"

gary271,

Hopefully, as more users notice greyed.  We'll get "fix" or Norton "Help" document.
Greyed settings (other than pending remediation) may be by design....but, we just don't know based upon Norton silence.
Regards
Thanks for your patience and help.

Re: Can't disable auto-protect: "pending remediation action"

Hi shahram:

Symantec employee Tony Weiss has pinned a post titled HOT ISSUES & FIXES - NIS/NAV/N360 22.5 at the top of this forum board acknowledging this bug still exists in the latest Norton v22.5.2.15.  See item # 4 under his list of known issues, which states:

"4) Unable to disable Auto-Protect in Norton Product after updating to 22.5, with a message shown: "These settings cannot be changed due to a pending remediation action. Restart you computer to resolve the issue." Restart does not resolve the issue."

According to Tony's post, "our engineering team is working to resolve them in a future update".

Thanking you, Referring to the Norton support and they told me that it had been caused by the Live Update; it must be uninstalled and reinstalled, and so the problem was solved, it is better to be done by Norton support because after reinstalling the NS they configure the setting in order to solve the problem, now my NS works well.

Thanking you, it was too fast to see, in addition to I got phone call at same time, but some or one option turned off in firewall sitting(Network Cost Awareness), after restarting PC in order to reinstall the NS; the NS was not able to connect with the NS server; the NS expert used the Command remote......, only I explain one experience, after that the above grayed sitting problem had been solved, later I faced other problem in this sense that the Sitting of the NS window did not come up that was resolved with  restarting the PC.

Today, the above problem come back to me again, the grayed sitting, I am tired and sick from uninstalling and reinstalling the NS, when will the update come to fix the problem??!! I hope that the NS provide the sooner an update for the problem, in addition to, when I run Live Update, it fails to finish the process, telling me" Failed to Complete".

Hi sharam:

If you <click here> are you redirected to Tony's post HOT ISSUES & FIXES - NIS/NAV/N360 22.5?

The "Failed to Complete" error sometimes occurs if you have a temporary problem connecting to the backend Symantec LiveUpdate servers.  Try running a manual LiveUpdate again in a few hours (right-click the Norton icon in your system tray and select LiveUpdate) and if you're connected to the internet and still having a problem after 6-8 hours, check to see if your Network Cost Awareness (Settings | Detailed Settings | Firewall | General Settings | Network Cost Awareness | Configure [+]) is On and the policy is set to No Limit.

From the Norton Security product manual:

"LiveUpdate cannot work if the Network Cost Awareness option in the Firewall window under Settings is set to No Traffic or Economy. Network Cost Awareness lets you define the amount of network bandwidth that Norton Security can use. Therefore, you must ensure that the Network Cost Awareness option is turned on and set to No Limit for LiveUpdate to run."

Hi shahram:

Sorry, I just noticed that several other Win 10 users are reporting the same LiveUpdate "Failed to Complete" error - see Dave Parker's image in his thread Auto update fails after upgrading to Windows 10 - and Norton is collecting diagnostic logs to determine the cause.

FWIW ~ I've managed to avoid greyed settings by Trust Now > Untrusted Files in Norton Insight.    I used to exclude the trigger program to sort greyed settings not related to malware remediation.  Now, I'll check Norton Insight  > Untrusted Files daily.  I'll click on Untrusted and scrutinize file via VirusTotal.  Then I'll do Trust Now.  Been working my machine for quite awhile.

I've sorted greyed settings not related to malware remediation by Exclude Auto-Protect /or by Norton Insight.

I've read several of your messages regarding greyed settings.  I'm sorry... from this distance I cannot do for you what I would do on my machine.  Greyed setting unless related to malware remediation is by available information cosmetic and an annoyance.  Grey settings not related to malware remediation by available information does not diminish protection.
