cant start quick scan - custom shows it running for 2 days but no signs

Can't start a quick scan. If I try 'custom' it shows that quick scan has been running for 2 days - but there's no other indication, nothing to stop.
Full scan, update, etc all ok. Reboot has no effect. Support diagnostic shows all ok.
Windows 10 NIS (latest version)
