Categorization failing after Norton Core Firmware 278

After core update 278 categories are coming back incorrectly. For example apple.com is reporting uncategorized.

There are many other websites coming back as the incorrect categories.

Where are you seeing what a website is categorized as?

Re: Categorization failing after Norton Core Firmware 278

In my notifications tab in the app.

Re: Categorization failing after Norton Core Firmware 278

Why type of notifications are you getting in the app when you visit apple.com?  I don't get any notifications when I visit apple.com.

Re: Categorization failing after Norton Core Firmware 278

<person> was blocked from visiting apple.com, which is not categorized on <device>. Do you want to add this site to your list of Allowed Sites in the future?

You have to be blocking whatever category the url comes back as or you get no notifications.

Re: Categorization failing after Norton Core Firmware 278

This type of blocking has nothing to do with the firmware update, this has to do with the company that categorizes the website.

Hello

That notification was done by BlueCoat. They are owned now by Symantec.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.

The issue at hand is in parental controls, which I personally do not use. Anyone using parental controls that can chime in?

Re: Categorization failing after Norton Core Firmware 278

The categories listing article is found here for Core. I believe you can manually set apple under the technology category and it will allow/deny per your setting. Other sites would require manual settings as well when detected. The Core categories are only a "generalized" listing of websites and may not screen every URL correctly on its own. Thus the ability to amend lists when needed by the end user.

Re: Categorization failing after Norton Core Firmware 278

The point is that I was not getting these messages prior to the firmware update and I would expect to not get these messages after the update. I'm currently working with Symantec and they believe they have found a resolution to this issue. I guess we shall see how it works after that firmware update.

bcdahl. Who are you working with at Symantec? Bluecoat, SafeWeb, Core support? I will refer this thread to the Core team admin for a response regarding a possible firmware release for this issue. Will post here when I have a reply.

FWIW!! Wondering if the issue in this thread may be co-related to the issue in this thread.

Re: Categorization failing after Norton Core Firmware 278

Chances are that it is related. Hopefully they have a solution soon.

I believe that I am working with the Norton Core team for a resolution.

FWIW if I check the categories of the mis categorized websites at sitereview.bluecoat.com I get the expected categories. There is a disconnect between what Bluecoat is categorizing the site as and what the core is displaying.

All of a sudden today I'm getting all kinds of notifications of sites including from Symantec.com.

Re: Categorization failing after Norton Core Firmware 278

Core team is working on a hotfix for the categorization issue.  It will be a couple weeks till its released.  For short term, if you un-check the parental control block on "uncategorized"  it will be a work around to the issue.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

Re: Categorization failing after Norton Core Firmware 278

I'm not using parental controls.  I've gotten messages from ratings-wrs.symantec.com (Malicious site Symantec.com).  Potentially risky site google.com.  I think this is a bit more urgent than "uncategorized".  I've also gotten messages for facebook.com, youtube.com, yahoo.com, etc.  All of these warnings with in the last 3 hours.

Re: Categorization failing after Norton Core Firmware 278

All: Please review my post in this thread as I believe the issues there are co-related to the ones in this one. I too am NOT utilizing parental controls on Core yet am seeing tons of sites that are legit popping up in notifications. I believe per the release notes for version 278, the statement quoted below may be part of or the actual issue.

These are release notes providing more detail on the nature of the changes:
•        Enables daily updates to malware definitions

Re: Categorization failing after Norton Core Firmware 278

Hello

We are not using parental controls. They are all turned off. Manny, I am getting notifications like you are, but for me it started the night of the 25 and is still continuing tonight. It is affecting 5 different devices including a Samsung TV. It's affecting my devices and my hubby's devices.

Have a Good Night and

Thanks.

Re: Categorization failing after Norton Core Firmware 278

@SoulAsylum,

The daily malware definition updates are unrelated.  All Norton Products are updated this way and Core has been doing this for a while.

We are actively investigating the issues reported in v 278 - we did find a problem with incorrectly uncategorized sites and are testing a fix for this today.  You all want us to release a tested fix that wont introduce other problems, so let the QA cycle testing take its course here and lets make sure its solid.  If we find new problems in the QA testing, we will fix them and repeat the cycle.

For the notifications on sites that are identified as malicious but should not be,  we are collecting data and investigating the issue.  If any of you encounter the incorrect notification, please shake your mobile device when the issue pops up you can submit an incident report (with logs) which will be helpful to us.

Re: Categorization failing after Norton Core Firmware 278

Hello Soul

Where do you see that Core has been getting daily malware definitions? I know my NSBU gets 3 SDS definitions during the week and 1 each day of the weekend.

Thanks.
