Certain Norton Tasks fail to run

I am on Win 7 64 bit, running NIS 20.3.0.36 using IE 10 as my browesr of choice.

I dont know if I am getting old, having a blonde moment or what - but I have the following showing in my Norton Tasks.

Please ignore the Windows Registry Cleaner showing Never - I have it disabled.

You will notice that the Internet Explorer History Cleaner, Internet Explorer Temporary File Cleaner and Windows Temporary File Cleaner have never been run,  The most recent install of NIS was Jan 15, 2013 - so I would have thought they should have all run by now.

I have attempted to manually start the tasks by left clicking on the icon on the front of the entry as shown below:

There is the broken dotted box formed around it, but nothing happens.  Clicking on that icon for other tasks does in fact start the task.

Get support does not help fix this.

I really do not want to do a reinstall as I still have my online and offline vault, although I am confident I can get both back - just not sure if I want to invest the time.

Anyone have any ideas?  I do have Norton Security Suite (v 20.2.0.19 installed on another Win 7 64 bit system with IE 10 and that works as expected. Of course that being a clone of N 360 provides another method to run those using Tuneup and or Task Scheduling for auto tasks.

Am I missing a setting somewhere???  I also seem to have gone brain dead in figuring out how I disabled the Registry cleaner.

TIA for any assistance.

Re: Certain Norton Tasks fail to run

Last I remember, Norton will list tasks not associated with IE if you have previously have another version of IE.  The only "fix" is to do a full uninstall / reinstall using add / remove program coupled with the Norton Removal Tool.

My Norton doesn't have the "never" task listed.

Re: Certain Norton Tasks fail to run

Thanks for the feedback Dave.  I just checked my NIS 2012 running on Vista (still on IE9) and it does not show those tasks listed at all.  I did some playing around with NIS 2012 and NIS v 20 on IE 9 in order to retain the Local Vault on the system that I am asking about, so anything is possible.

I am all for leaving it as it is and ignoring it rather than playing around with a clean install and trying to get my Local Vault back.

Hi yank

Did you originally have the Norton Security Suite installed on this system prior to installing NIS? We've seen something similar happen with Norton Tasks when NIS was installed after beta testing Norton 360 V6:

http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Question-to-Norton-Tasks/m-p/654401/highlight/true#M194122

Essentially, the tasks that were 'Norton 360 only' from the previous install were appearing in the NIS Norton Tasks window. The jobs don't run automatically/manually because these tasks are not a feature of Norton Internet Security. That's why you can't find the setting to disable the Registry Cleaner for example; it simply doesn't exist!

Stick with your plan: leave it as it is and ignore it. Just make a note for yourself to use the Norton Removal Tool on this machine next time you decide to do a clean install.

Come to think of it, I do believe I did have NSS installed on this system while doing some testing of NSS in the past.  It wouold appear that not only the Beta version can cause this - but also an incomplete removal (not using the NRT?) of another Norton product may cause it.

Also that might explain the other strange thing I noticed in the past - which is a long story, but perhaps worth repeating if it helps another user in the long run:

Here's the long story:

Very interesting discovery.  I was reading thru the N 360 posts this AM and found this one in regards to Tutorials via the Support Button dropdown menu.

The link shown in the post does not work, so I went to my Norton Security Suite (as I do not have N 360) Support > Tutorials via the drop down and it produced the following link:

https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v73086029_EndUserProfile_en_us?ispid=5555...

Clicking on NO under Was this Information Helpful? led me to the following URL:

https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/contact-sos?ispid=5555

This link seems correct as it is NSS, an ISP product installed on this system.

I then went to my NIS v 20.3.0.36 installation and via the Support > Tutorials got to the following link:

https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v72380733_EndUserProfile_en_us?ispid=5555...

Clicking on NO under Was this Information Helpful?, I was taken to the following link:

https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/contact-sos?ispid=5555

Which is obviously incorrect for my "retail version of  NIS v 20.3.0.36

I then went to my Vista Laptop with NIS 2012 installed went to Support > Tutorials and a completely different looking page opened at this URL:

http://us.norton.com/products/tutorials/?pvid=nis2012

There is a lot more info on this page and it does not have Was this Information Helpful? listed at the bottom of the page.

There appears something totally wrong with the version 20.XX links for Tutorials.

Could someone running N 360  retail plase check Tutorials and see if it is the same way?

I never got a reply from Norton on this one - so now that it is on the open forum - perhaps someone with N 360 (and who have not had NSS) installed will reply!

TYVM elsewhere for your info - I do believe yours is the solution.

Re: Certain Norton Tasks fail to run

I believe you can ensure that Local IDSafe will be kept if you install the 2012 version first before doing a re-install the NIS2013.  So uninstall NIS2013, use NRT, install NIS2012, create ID Safe, install 2013.

Re: Certain Norton Tasks fail to run

Edit: I checked with the 2013 version of Norton I had and clicking "No" in the tutorial page brought up the correct help page.  Perhaps your installation is corrupted due to the previous installation of NSS?
