Child disables Chrome extension but parent isn't notified.

Hi, my child's computer is Windows 10 x64, fully updated. Child is a Standard User.

Norton Family, Search Signature, and Social Network Signature version 3.6.3.24.

Online Framework and Datastore v. 6.6.0.45. Search Signature Version 3.6.3.

Google Chrome 56.0.2924.76 64-bit.

In chrome://extensions, the Norton Family 3.6.3.24 extension is enabled, Allow in incognito, and Allow access to file URLs.

Problem: No "tamper warning" ever appears when my kid goes to chrome://extensions and simply disables the Norton Family extension. I logged in as my son and tried it myself just now; I turned off the extension and could search for and view whatever porn I wanted. Can someone advise? Thank you.

Re: Child disables Chrome extension but parent isn't notified.

Hi AMadar,

Do you receive any other notifications, ex visiting a forbidden website?

Also, if you have received any delayed notification (browser tamper alert)?

Thanks

1. Do you receive any other alert notifications, ex, blocking forbidden website notifications?

I have web house rules set to "Moderate: Give a warning but allow ___ to access the website." No, I don't get any notifications at all.

2. Can you please check "Alert Notification Preference" under Parent page to check the settings after you log onto your Norton Family online account?

The preference is set to Weekly Email Reports (not Monthly).

3. Can you please check IE and Firefox browser and disable the plug-ins to see if you get notifications?

Neither browser is installed on the machine, only Chrome. I have EdgeBlocker (http://www.sordum.org/9312/edge-blocker-v1-3/) installed to stop him using Edge.

As of 3:15 today, here's what I did to view pornographic GIFs under his account:

  1. Log in as him (it's a standard account).

  2. Start Chrome.

  3. Go to chrome://extensions.

  4. Disable the Norton Family 3.6.3.24 extension.

  5. On the Chrome menu, click New Incognito Window.

  6. In Incognito mode, search for "various porn search words GIF".

  7. Click Images.

  8. View pornographic GIFs.

Any suggestions? Thanks for looking into this.

Re: Child disables Chrome extension but parent isn't notified.

Norton Family currently checks website domain, not individual image, so what you described doesn't necessirly related to Chrome extension.

For now, please select the option “Use strict filter” for Google’s SafeSearch Filtering under “Search settings” link at Google page http://www.google.com/preferences?hl=en to see if it helps to block unwanted images.

Back to the Chrome extension issue, if you receive any other notifications at all?

Also, if you have received any delayed notification (browser tamper alert)?

Thanks

Re: Child disables Chrome extension but parent isn't notified.

I was unable to find an option "Use strict filter" at the link you gave me. See screenshot below.

I do see occasional notifications such as "child attempted to visit blocked site and did not proceed" when I log into Norton Family online. But I've never received any sort of browser tamper alert, even when I tampered with the Norton Family extension myself this morning.

To amend my earlier post, Norton Family IS actually blocking the image thumbnails in Chrome's regular mode and incognito mode, as long as the NF extension is enabled. It's working as it should.

BUT it's trivially easy to turn off the extension with a couple of clicks, then switch to incognito and view the images, no problem.

I did try locking SafeSearch on the Search Settings page, using my own credentials. Still plenty of porn when I switched to incognito mode. I'm continuing to research how to disable incognito mode in Chrome (that would solve this problem I think) but it appears to be very difficult.

Meanwhile I would REALLY like to get tamper alerts from NF if possible, that's my main request here.

Ok, looks like google has updated the page, so please select Turn on Safesearch.

We will check into the issue that you are not getting tamper alerts

Re: Child disables Chrome extension but parent isn't notified.

OK, thank you.

For what it's worth, I found a small Windows utility called IncognitoGone (http://incognitogone.com). It permanently removes "incognito" mode from Chrome, IE, and/or Edge. Bitdefender anti-virus deemed it safe. I went ahead and ran it on Chrome and incognito mode is now gone! But the celebration was short-lived.

Next, I enabled and attempted to lock Google's Safesearch. I figured I would use my own Google credentials to perform the lock. BUT Chrome wouldn't honor the lock. A single click while logged in as my son unlocked Safesearch.

This brings me to my next point -- I guess I was under the impression that NF is supposed to "force" safe searching for the search engines listed in the screenshot below? In other words, even if the kid tries to disable safe search (as mine is doing), isn't NF's Search Supervision feature supposed to either prevent that or re-enable it immediately? Or does "turn on all of those providers filtering options" mean NF turns it on once, but it can be turned off again? And shouldn't an attempt to turn off safe searching for these supported search engines trigger an NF tamper alert to the parents...?

Sorry for so many questions, and thanks again for your help understanding/fixing this.

Hi AMadar,

These are good questions. Our engineering team is investigating the issue.  I'll keep you updated as soon as I get any news.

Looks like progress: I just got a "time allowance reached" e-mail notification. I don't know if I have ever received one before! I'm going to try disabling the NF extension and see if I get a tamper notification.
