Re: child logged out

This is a curious issue.  I want make sure that I understand your issue clearly in order to reproduce it. 1.  You log into your child's computer that is monitored by Safety Minder (computer 1) .2.  You log into the Online Family website and monitor the activity of computer 1 using computer 2.3.  You notice the message stating that child 1 has logged off computer 1.4.  You continue to get monitored activity on the website using computer 2.  Is this correct?   Although you receive the message stating that your child has logged off, does Safety Minder still function, recording all other monitored activity? If you can answer this additional questions that would be great.1.  Are you using domain accounts?2.  At any time does the computer go into a power saving mode?  (suspend/hibernate) 3.  At any time does the user log off?4.  Is the computer always connected to the internet when powered on? Regards,Henry Su

Re: child logged out

The summary of what is happening is exactly right.

1=what is a domain account?

2= The pc is connect to the mains supply all the time

3= doesnt log off only shuts down when finished with the pc

4=yes always connected

Yesterday when i booted his pc up i got the message straight away but all activity is being reported

I am now getting the notice norton safety minder has been disabled on XXX computer.

Re: child logged out

I am seeing the same behaviour.  The activity log records that my child has logged off when they logon and the records that they have logged on when they logoff.

Re: child logged out

I am also getting exactly the same. In fact I don't see any logon activity, just log off. I was thinking before I saw this thread that logon and logoffs were being reported as the same activity.

Re: child logged out

I think there is an explanation for this phenomenon (web activities shown after child logs out). The websites being reported are, perhaps, not accessed by the child. These might be system (computer) activities. For eg (Steve99's case): media.steampowered.com appears to be a site accessed by some gaming application. Similarly download714.avast.com may have been accessed by an Avast application.

In Moclobe's case, perhaps it is a Windows Vista's Gadget service accessing gadgets.live.com.

There is only one very clear exception. It is www.google.com accessed on 12/19/09 7:52 PM in Harry10's case. I don't have any possible explanation for this.

Note: It is possible for OS, Softwares to contact their update servers to download their updates automatically even if no user is logged into the machine. These applications might be running under "system" account/service. Some applications might even have a preference to contact their respective update server when a user logs of the machine (to cause minimum impact on user experience)

Note 2: The activity "Logged out of machine" is reported for two different kind of actions (Child logs of the machine or reboots it)

If my speculation is correct then we need to handle each issue reported on this thread on per customer per web site basis. If we can confirm these are automatic activities (web sites accessed by OS or an Application) and not children activities then we can update Norton Safety Minder to ignore some or all of these activities.

To get started, we need to have some confirmations:

1. Computer (child) was either logged out or restarted but not Shut down during the time activities were reported.

2. Children don't remember accessing these sites.

3. Computers were connected to Internet during this time.

4. All the activities reported after "Logged out" activity are always Web site visits and no other activity like Instant Messaging or Social Networking activity is ever seen.

To Steve99,

With respect to your comment "In fact I don't see any logon activity, just log off.". It appears to be a separate bug. I am working on it. Please let me know the version of Norton Safety Minder and Operating System you are using.

To Moclobe,

With respect to your comment "The activity log records that my child has logged off when they logon and the records that they have logged on when they logoff.", I hope the above explanation makes it clear that this is not the case. Log on and Log off are shown properly and activities between them are most probably automatic activities.

Re: child logged out

Hi Syed,

While I agree with you that some of the sites are accessed by background tasks I have include another log below from my childs time on the computer today.  I have marked the sites that are not access by any background tasks.  Infact the mozilla sites are from my child accessing her email though the thunderbird email client.  My child logged on at approx 12:30 and stayed on until approx 2:15 when they recieved the 15 min time warning and logged off.  I have check the machines system event logs and have confirmed that she logged off when the OnlineFamily.Norton log says she logged on.

Re: child logged out

Hi Moclobe,

Please get back to me with following information:

1. Version of Norton Safety Minder (Right-click NSM icon in system tray and click "About Norton Safety Minder")

2. Version of Operating System (eg: Windows Vista Home Basic SP2)

3. A screenshot of Time Zone settings on the machine.

4. From your description, I understand you have configured Time Restrictions for the child. If so, I expect to see an alert like "Notified - Daily time limit reached" or "Blocked - Daily time limit reached". But there is no such alert mentioned in the log you copied. Are you copying logs from "All Activity" tab as they appear or editing them? Also, what is the Time Restriction setting? Is it "Automatically log out" or other setting? Please provide a screenshot of the Time settings from Web Portal, if possible.

5. Browser version your child is using to access sites and the browser version you are using to see child's activities (Web Portal https://onlinefamily.norton.com)

1. Norton Safety Minder Version 1.1.5.15

2. Windows 7 Ultimate

3.

4. I am copying the log from the logon time to the logoff time from the All Activity screen with no removal of log entries.

5. Microsoft Internet Explorer 8

Re: child logged out

I noticed that I was not using the latest version of Norton Safety Minder so I upgraded to version 1.2.0.39.  The log now only shows a logoff event when my child logs on and nothing when they logoff

Re: child logged out

You are right. I am able to reproduce the issue. Norton Safety Minder is not reporting "logging out" action and incorrectly reports "login" as "logged out". I have reported this bug to our engineering team to rectify the issue.

Thanks for your patience and explanation.

Re: child logged out

Syed

I think from the latest postings on this thread you've confirmed there is a problem with reporting of logging on/logging off. However in response to your question re versions I am currently running:-

Norton safety Minder 1.2.0.39

Norton Online Framework 1.2.0.53

Norton Online Database Version 1.2.0.53

Re: child logged out

Hi Steve,

The issue "The activity of logging in is incorrectly reported as "Log out"" is fixed but it is not available for customers yet. And we are still working on the other issue "The logging out event is not reported".

Unfortunately, I will not be able to give you any timeline but if there is any update in this regard, it will be posted here.
