I have enabled the Norton Security Extension for Chrome, but a side effect is that it changes what happens when I open a new tab. Is there any way to retain this extension but set what i want to open on a new tab?
Very easily done. Just disable the Norton Home Page extension. You can uninstall it. It is not necessary. All you need is the Norton Safe Web and Identity if you use it. When you installed and then opened up a new tab Chrome asked you "Your settings have changed do you want to restore or keep them".
My options for extensions are Norton Security and Norton Safe Search.
There is no specific "Norton Security" extension. When you install Norton Security it will also install Norton Safe Search, Norton Safe Web, Norton Identity and Norton Homepage. The settings for each of these are in Norton Security under the Identity tab. Google Chrome also lets you adjust these settings. Not exactly sure what setting are you speaking of. Could you post a screen shot? What happens when you open up a new tab? Do you see the Norton Safe Search box? If so just disable Safe Search.
Turning off or turning on Norton Safe Web Norton Safe Web protects your computer while you browse the Internet using Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome browsers. It analyzes the security levels of the websites that you visit and indicates if the websites are free from threats. It provides you a safe environment on the web by displaying the site rating icons next to each search result. The site rating icons lets you know if a website is malicious or not even before you visit it. You can turn off or turn on Norton Safe Web in the Safe Surfing section under Identity Protection settings window. To turn off or turn on Norton Safe Web 1 In the Norton Security main window, double-click Identity, and then click ID Settings. 2 Under Safe Surfing, in the Norton Safe Web row, do one of the following: 1 To turn off Norton Safe Web, move the On/Off switch to the right to the Off position. 1 To turn on Norton Safe Web, move the On/Off switch to the left to the On position. 3 Click Apply, and then click Close
Extensions I have are shown in the picture.
I do not wish to turn off Norton safe Web, only change what happens when I open a new tab.
Change your default search back to Google instead of Norton. Which version of Norton Security are you using? Current version is 22.8. Is your Google Chrome up to date? I have Norton Security 22.8 and I do not have a specific Norton Security extension. You must be using a Mac. This is not the Mac section. Mods please change it.
I am using mac, but I also have the same issue on Windows. Default search is set to google.
Chrome is up to date, version of Norton Security is listed as 7.2
I've asked for the thread be moved to Mac board for better exposure to Mac users.
Can you posts a screen shot of what you are speaking about please. All the settings to change how Chrome behaves are built into Chrome. To change the new tab settings go to settings/ appearance. Also under startup. Google Chrome can be fully customized to suit your needs despite what extensions you may have.
I use a Chrome extension called speed dial, when I open a new tab I get my Speed Dial.
With the Norton Extensions enabled, I get a blank tab.
Sounds like an extension conflict. Not really a Norton issue. Which Speed Dial are you using? Have you tried disabling speed dial? Speed dial is not exactly necessary now a days. When you open a new tab it will show you the most recent web pages.
Using Speed Dial 2.1.3. Speed dial being necessary isn't really the question here, I choose to use it as I find it a lot more efficient than looking at recent tabs.
So in a nutshell your problem is that your speed dial no longer works with the Norton extensions installed. Am I right. According to the Chrome app store Speed Dial has not been updated since May 29,2016. Where as Norton extensions have been updated with the past few weeks. Did you ask over at Speed Dial? Did you try disabling safe search but keep safe web? That can be found in the toolbar settings. Did you try resetting Google Chrome? If you scroll down to the bottom under settings you will see advanced options. Click that then scroll down to "reset settings". This will also disable all your extensions. You can just re enable them.
From your image above, you have Norton Safe Search enabled. This just changes your default search engine. This is not the same as the safe web indications. They will still work as part of the Norton Toolbar. Try disabling this feature and see if you still see the issue.
I already said this peter. Lol
