chronic installation repair issue

Hello,

Norton Autofix chronically has to fix the installation.  It fixes 1 issue everytime I click on "support."  Does anyone have an idea of why this is happening?

Norton Internet Security
21.5.0.19
Windows 7 Home Premium
7601.18409.amd64fre.win7sp1_gdr.140303-2144
Norton Autofix Results: 1 item(s)
Installation :: Success

Thanks,

Jay

Re: chronic installation repair issue

Hi, Jay. Welcome. A few people have experienced this happening. It might be worth using the Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool, which will give you a clean copy.    http://www.norton.com/nrnr

If you use it, please read the Before you begin note, and run Live Update  after until no more are found.

A reboot never hurts, either.

Re: chronic installation repair issue

Hi F4E, Jay,

I thought I read somewhere that this was to do with the new IPS engine and the disabled IE Firefox extension.  I'm still trying to find that post.

Here you go.

"What is being repaired and why it doesn't seem to stay repaired:

- Upon installation of NIS 21 we register the NVP Firefox add-on in the firefox registry.

- Now the update for Intrusion Prevention removes the entry in the Firefox registry (because the add-on is no longer needed or used)

- When you click "get support" NIS 21 scans the original install code vs what is currently on the system. Since the registry key for the Firefox add-on is now gone, it re-creates it and you see "installation success".

- Then almost immediately, our Intrusion Prevention component removes the registry key (as it is not needed)

- If you click "get support" again, it re-creates the key again, and so on..."

Re: chronic installation repair issue

Hi, Krusty and Jay. I have the same specs and system as Jay, and have had no problems with either browsers or Live Update which is why I suggested the NRRT, which would at least give Jay a clean install to start troubleshooting, if necessary.

Re: chronic installation repair issue

Have you run Support > Get Support and see if Autofix fixes something a few times?

... Just curious.

Re: chronic installation repair issue

Hi, Krusty. I ran Autofix, and it did one mystery installation fix, but that's all. Subsequent tries came back with no fix needed.

Re: chronic installation repair issue

Thank you for all the info and suggestions!  Do I need to run the RNR in safe mode, or does it matter?

Re: chronic installation repair issue

The Norton Remove and reinstall Tool does not need to be run in Safe Mode, as a matter of fact I have never even tried to run it in Safe Mode!

Re: chronic installation repair issue

It's very simple,as Krusty13 already suggested, it happens because of this: http://community.norton.com/t5/Norton-Internet-Security-Norton/Everytime-I-run-quot-get-support-quot-in-my-NIS-21-5-I-get-an/m-p/1174535/highlight/true#M263316  see message 12.

and can be safely ignored...
