Cleaner pop up before Norton & after Norton

Hi All, I got Norton because of "SOME" pop up cleaner warnings (quite a few) because I thought I read that it got rid of all that kind of garbage & more. Since I installed Norton & paid for it, I have gotten the same pop ups on chrome & a few others I haven't seen before & Norton hasn't even flagged them once or even cleaned them out of my Android. Doing some research I found that some cleaner pop ups (like Rocket Cleaner) have been made to target these Moto's like mine & specifically on chrome & are more personalized to make people think that it's real when obviously it's not. Now, I have seen that Norton has flagged & isolated a couple sites that automatically showed up upon opening chrome, which I find acceptable. But these automatically popped up exactly at the same place as the cleaner warnings & count downs (BS), upon opening chrome. Was I mistaken about my expectations of Norton? Is Chrome beyond Norton's abilities? Is it true that I have to do a factory reset to get rid of these pop ups? I'm prepared to & have written down all my sites & pw's if needed. I got Norton 360 thinking that it would remove all pop ups, adware, malware, whatever, etc, etc... so I wouldn't have to do all that timely typing. I have done some research on the pop up issues I get. Did I not do enough research on Norton & it's capabilities? Note that I'm still in my free trial period. Thank you.

Re: Cleaner pop up before Norton & after Norton

It is possible that you have some kind of browser redirect issue. Does this just come up when you first open Chrome? If so, what is your home page? It could be a malformed ad on the page you are viewing.

If you did pick up some browser 'helper' before you installed Norton, it could easily be missed. Had you already had Norton installed before you came across this item, Norton might have blocked it from getting installed. Now if it is there, Norton generally does not block redirects because many websites use redirects for legitimate purposes. Norton uses redirect on most of their pages.

To help resolve your issue I would suggest installing and running Malwarebytes free for Android.

Going forward, you might consider an ad blocker app to help protect against redirects.

Re: Cleaner pop up before Norton & after Norton

Hi Peterweb, I did what you recommended & got Malwarebytes free for $12 per year, nothing I can't handle on disability. I did everything to get it up & running & it said that I had 2 issues & supposedly took care of it. So I went about my day & some hours later I opened up Chrome again & there was a different set of 4 pop ups in a row. So, I opened up and ran both, Malwarebytes free 1st & then Norton 360. Both said that everything was good & my Moto g Stylus 5g was safe with zero issues. Is this when I get rid of & unsubscribe from both devices & get my money back & go back to factory settings? Or is there something that will work for real because as far as I can tell with everything I have trusted enough to pay for, I still have what I started with except my wallet is lighter & I'm only slightly more frustrated. Only slightly because I knew to expect that some troubled children like to wreck things for others so they can have some kind of inner sense of accomplishment. I guess their mommies didn't give them enough love & attention & they never got over it enough to actually grow up, etc... Before I change anything, I'm going to wait a little bit to see what you recommend because I do respect people who actually help in these incidents & I've had Norton in the past when I still used pc's. Thank you

Re: Cleaner pop up before Norton & after Norton

This does sound like malformed ads on the web sites you are visiting, or your home page. Try installing an ad blocker app on your device.

The free Malwarebytes may have offered a full subscription for $12 per year, but you should not have to pay anything. During the installation process there is a Skip option for signing up and paying for the Premium version. I admit it is not highlighted very well, but it is there.

So you can request a refund or cancel your purchase as you may have started a free 30 day trial. See this information from Google support.   https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/2479637?hl=en

You can also request a refund for your 360 product if you do not want to keep it. You have 60 days from purchase to make this request. You need to contact Norton Support to make this request.    www.norton.com/contactcs

Re: Cleaner pop up before Norton & after Norton

I did have this issue before I got Norton, it just seemed to get worse because there are pop ups I haven't seen before. Yes it only happens when I open Chrome. My home page is Google & the pop up seems to have replaced what Chrome usually opened to. So far this morning & maybe twice before, Chrome opened to some kind of bridal site out of Florida. I don't tap on anything but I do scroll down to see if anything stinks. The first pop up I checked into I found came out of the Ukraine & it looked real & had Google logos as if approved by Google. Then before you can get a real good look at it something pops up in front of that. Thinking back before that I remember that there was Rocket cleaner warnings & I've seen these before in Google play but that's all. I'm not sure but I'm thinking that it was this Rocket Cleaner is also out of the Ukraine. I also had specific warnings that I checked into that said because Chrome claims to be bullet proof is why these little hackers were targeted it but they also had written on some of the warnings, my exact android. Yes I got Norton because of the positive history I've had with them years ago. I also thought that if I had Norton prior to this petty pop up garbage I most likely wouldn't have this problem now. And yes I opted for the Malwarebytes believing that it could clean what they said it could clean. I'm guessing that they probably work better if gotten prior to my issues. Prior to getting both, I took it to the geek squad at Best Buy & they said that I shouldn't need to get any outside protection but was somewhat concerned about the pop ups I showed him that I took screenshots of. I later learned that androids aren't as protected as iPhone's are straight out of the box. They also stated that most will get pop ups & I should just work around it because they are only harmful if opened. I'm really only concerned because I don't remember if I opened one or not at the beginning. I knew for many years to not open anything that seems to show up for no apparent reason. This issue seems to have me second guessing my own actions or inactions. I'm trying to remember as much as possible so you can help me the best you can. Thanks again

Re: Cleaner pop up before Norton & after Norton

If this is only happening from the Chrome browser, I would suggest going into Android Settings > Apps and look for the Chrome browser. Tap on that and in the Storage section tap on Manage Storage and delete all app data. Also in the Storage section, clear the app cache. Then restart the phone and test the Chrome browser again to see if you still see the redirects.

Then to help stop this going forward you can install an ad blocker app which should block any redirects.

Re: Cleaner pop up before Norton & after Norton

I may have finally come to an end. I had a few alerts about a liveauctioneers app & I unsubscribed & purged it myself the other day. Then I had it again today & I tried to log in to Norton & put in the correct UN & PW a few times & it just wouldn't let me in. I went to check my pw's & found that this liveauctioneers was still in there. That's weird because I had removed it myself & now it's reappeared. How does that happen? I then removed it again for a 3rd time & went back to see what I went back for in the first place & & seen it came back for a 4th time. So I again deleted it, went back to see if it showed up again & it didn't. So I then went to check my pw for Norton & I was correct about what I had entered to sign in. I went to sign in g found that my pw's were back to normal & just used my f-print g I was in. What the hell just happened? I'm not going to be satisfied until it stays good for at least a few days or so. The trauma still has to wear off but I'm hoping it's over. Let me know what you think is happening & please google hacked liveauctioneers & take a look if you don't already know. Thanks again

Re: Cleaner pop up before Norton & after Norton

Had you installed the Liveauctioneers app? The hack you mention is a breach of that website's database of user names and passwords. It would only affect that web site.

Has your phone been rooted? If so, that may have allowed something onto your phone.

If you still have strange issues, a last resort would be to reset your device to factory settings. Then install Norton before installing any other apps or going out onto the internet.

Re: Cleaner pop up before Norton & after Norton

Well, I'm thinking that you may have called it with my phone being "ROOTED". I'm still getting the "pop ups" upon opening Chrome. I haven't as many after my last search to purge unwanted & possibly harmful apps, etc... I'm pretty much back to the same pop ups, including the "Rocket Cleaner & similar & the newest Bridal Wedding Shopping pop ups instead of the Google home site that should be there upon opening. So, before typing this to you, I have uninstalled the Malwarebytes app from there uninstall section & will most likely do the same with Norton after your next response or one more after I can pick your brain for more knowledge. Question: I have already written down all the apps & their pw's I have on my phone. Do I need to do the same with anything else like my important Calendar dates & all my phone numbers? If so, is there another way to back them up since my hands are somewhat crippled with arthritis & loss of cartilage? I'm thinking that I should. I'm just asking, is there another option? After backing up everything you (The Brain;) let me know I should, is there an app that would insure anything like what I've got or can get would be stopped or at least warning me so I know not to go further? Lastly; is there anything else you (The Brain;) can think of that I didn't cover or have missed due to my ignorance of our modern computer systems &/or securities? I'd really like to possibly make this phone be my last with internet capabilities because I'm really growing more away from all this. But, could see maybe keeping some aspects like texting & Google Earth. This may be a reach, but, would you know of any unlocked androids that may have pre-installed military type securities that are accessable to the general public? I've seen some that are built to withstand USMC type abuse & also some with crazy huge batteries which are still reasonably small. Well, I'll check for your response within a day or three to allow you some thought time if you'd like. No rush since my Moto isn't getting HOT yet:) Thanks Tons

Re: Cleaner pop up before Norton & after Norton

As far as backing up your data, contacts, and calendar, this article from computerworld can help explain how to back this information up.    https://www.computerworld.com/article/3215095/how-to-back-up-android-pho...

For the military grade device, it sounds like you have already researched this. I have not experience with these. A little more searching will get your answer.

You do not really need something that drastic as long as you do not root the device and only download apps from the Google Play Store.
