Cloud vs. Local for Identity Safe

I am running Norton Security Suite and have a question.

If for any reason I have to re-install Security Suite (e.g., after HP recovery), with the local storage of identities I lose all the information in the identity safe and have to start all over.  I am wondering if I used the cloud for the information instead and had to re-install Security Suite if it would after installation allow me to re-acquire the logins and passwords prior to re-install from the cloud information?

I run HP OEM Windows 8.1 (64-bit).

Thanks.

Re: Cloud vs. Local for Identity Safe

I prefer to stay with the Local Vault, so I export my Local Vault and save the "DAT File" to my hard drive as well as a USB Drive for safe keeping. That way I can always import the saved file if my Norton Security Local Vault ever gets corrupted and I have to restore it. If you prefer to stay with the Local Vault instead of going to a Cloud Vault, there's also a procedure for restoring your local vault and I'm sure someone will be along to post a link to it. I have a printout of that procedure that I've used when setting up new or restored PC's.

Edit: Here is a link to the procedure that I mentioned.

Re: Cloud vs. Local for Identity Safe

I like to keep local myself.  How and where do I find the DAT file for the vault to backup.

Thanks.

Re: Cloud vs. Local for Identity Safe

That information is in the link on previous post.

I can only use the Local vault on IE.

Firefox, Edge, Vivaldi and probably Chrome (I don't use it) can only use a Cloud vault so IE is my emergency browser if the Cloud goes down which it has a few times. Yes I went to the dark side.

Thanks.

I haven't tested this yet but I think it will work.

Re: Cloud vs. Local for Identity Safe

@yank our Comcast Guru can confirm this, but I'm not sure you can use a cloud vault with a Comcast version of Norton. I mention this as you call your product Norton Security Suite. So the best option is to have a backup on a thumb drive as BuckV115  suggests.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Cloud vs. Local for Identity Safe

If I use the backup method I really don't want to use the cloud.

Rather than a USB drive I have an addition 1GB data drive on the laptop in addition to the system drive to use.

Thanks,

Re: Cloud vs. Local for Identity Safe

The Cloud Vault can be used with Norton Security Suite from Comcast installed, provided you have created a Norton Account and have Norton Mobile installed.

As an example, I have the Norton Security Premium installed on a WIN 10  system which has Norton Mobile as part of the product.  I have a Norton Account ( due to my subscription being tracked by Norton).  I have cloud vaults available on two android phones, my iPad, my WIN 10 NSP and also my WIN 7 system running Comcast's NSS.

If a user only has Comcast NSS available, then they need to purchase Norton Mobile in order to create and use a Cloud Vault.  Let me also add, that the Local Vault and the Cloud Vault will not be synced, however any devices tied to Norton Mobile will be synced.

Hope that is clear.

Now in regards to backup of Identity Safe with a Local Vault.  ID Safe does not perform a backup automatically like the retail Norton Products which use the Cloud vault does.  A manual backup (Export) of the Local Vault must be done as BuckV115 suggests.  The Export can be accomplished in either .DAT or .CSV format.  The .DAT format is encrypted, while the .CSV format can be read using a text editor such as Word or Notepad.

Re: Cloud vs. Local for Identity Safe

Thank you for your added information.  As I wrote before I really want to stay local.  Aside from copying to my data drive I also use NOVASTOR's NOVABACK to backup to the data drive.  Therefore, I can, if necessary restore the password vault from a backup file.

Thanks.

Re: Cloud vs. Local for Identity Safe

Like others, I prefer to keep a local (Identity Safe) vault rather than cloud based on Chrome and why can't we have the choice.  Looks like you want us to go back to IE and not use Chrome but why?

Re: Cloud vs. Local for Identity Safe

why can't we have the choice.

Excellent question that we have been asking Norton for many years now.

Looks like you want us to go back to IE and not use Chrome but why?

It is not so much that Norton wants us to use IE, as that Chrome, Firefox, and Edge have restricted the way add ons can interact with their browsers. So Norton had to create completely new extensions to even provide the access to the cloud vault. And as they have abandoned the local vault in their Security products, they were unlikely to add the local vault code to the new extensions.

IE is the last one that has not had major changes like the others...likely because MS wants us to use Edge instead. So for now you can still use the local vault there.

BTW. So far I have been able to keep the local vault in Chrome by using the older ID Safe extension version 1.05. If you can find that, you too can still access your preferred vault. Just disable the newer 5.x.x.x version to avoid problems.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.
