Confused about how Core Security Plus and other Norton security software interrelate

By way of background, I have had a subscription to Norton Internet Security With Backup for a long time. I also have a Mobile Security subscription.  Today I pre-ordered a Norton Core Router, to be shipped this summer when it is released.

One of the benefits of the pre-order is that you can download and install the Norton Core Security Plus software and use it free until the router ships in the summer, when a subscription charge kicks in.

One of the FAQ's on the Core related Norton webpage answers the question "Do I need an antivirus solution if I have Norton Core’s subscription?"  The significant part of the answer is "As long as you maintain an active subscription to Norton Core Security Plus, no other Internet security solution is required to keep your home network and all its devices protected."  This would lead me to believe that Norton Internet Security is no longer required once Norton Core Security Plus is installed and that the same may be true of Mobile Security.

I ran the Norton Core Security Plus install.  However Norton Core Security Plus does not show up on my Win 7 start menu programs list.   Norton Internet Security With Backup still seems to be there, but backup became unable to connect to my Norton on-line backup storage. And now the Internet Security window opens in a frozen tight condition and will not respond when you try to open Internet Security.

So at this point I am majorly confused.  How do Norton Core Security Plus and Norton Security with Backup interact?  Do I need to have both installed?  Should I have uninstalled Norton Security with Backup first (perhaps using the removal tool) before installing Norton Core Security Plus and cancelled my Norton Security with Backup?  If not and I need to have both installed, how do I get my Norton Security with Backup to function again?  Where do I go from here.

And should my Mobile Security subscription be discontinued now that I have Norton Core Security Plus available?

Help!!

P.S.

1. Also strongly recommend having a FAQ in the Core FAQs that address these "what should I do" issues for Norton customers who already have other Norton software installed when they want to install Norton Core Security Plus.

2, I placed a support call and was transferred to someone who was supposed to be knowledgeable about Core, but he really was not at all informed with respect to what Norton Core Security Plus was useful for before the router shipped and is installed.  He tried to wing it, but was obviously floundering.

I also use Norton's Internet security.  I am about to pre-order the Core.  Should I uninstall my current Norton's before I install Norton Core Security Plus?  Also I have around 280 days left on my current subscription, will I get any credit for the time left?

Thanks

Re: Confused about how Core Security Plus and other Norton security software interrelate

From the Norton Core FAQ

Norton Core comes with a one-year complimentary subscription to Norton Core Security Plus that includes unlimited IoT device protection for connected devices, comprehensive parental controls, and Norton Security that can be installed on up to 20 laptops, desktops, smartphones and tablets.

So it appears that the Core Security Plus is somehow tied to the router to protect the internet fridges and other IOT devices, but you still will have a version of Norton Security to cover the traditional devices covered by Norton.

Re: Confused about how Core Security Plus and other Norton security software interrelate

Hi,

When you pre-order through an upgrade alert/pop-up on your existing Norton product, the same Norton Account will be used for Norton Core. So, as @peterweb mentioned, your existing Norton product subscription simply gets added to the new Norton Core Security Plus subscription - a complimentary license that comes with your Norton Core pre-order. NCS+ consists of the same features as Norton Security Premium, and can protect up to 20 devices. Thank you.

Re: Confused about how Core Security Plus and other Norton security software interrelate

OK, problem solved through trial and error.

The Core Security Plus software package is a nice "perk" you get with pre-ordering a Core.  You get to use the software at no charge until your Core ships, at which time a paid subscription starts.  (If I recall, the first year's subscription is also included with the Core purchase and as I understand it, when your Core ships to you, if you have another Norton security product subscription that has not yet expired, the remaining time on the old subscription will be credited toward you Core Security plus package, but have no way to personally confirm that now.)

The Core Security Plus package is rather cleverly done.  On my iPad and iPhone it installed Norton Mobile.  On my Windows machines it installs the full version of Norton Security, complete with backup.

So here is what I did, one device at the time.  I uninstalled the existing Norton software (in the case of Windows machines, take the uninstall option that leaves your setting intact) on my device and then signed into my Norton account.  If the device I just removed Norton from was there in my device list, I removed that device.  Then I picked my Core Security Plus subscription and download the installation software.  (I needed to do this manually on my iPhone and iPad, but with my Windows machines the Norton website realized that the machines weren't protected and offered a download button, which downloaded the Norton Security software covered by the Core Security Plus package.)  All reasonably straightforward.

OK, another glitch has reared its head.  I used my Norton Core Security Plus subscription on my Windows 10 desktop. (See message just above for background.) It nicely installed Norton Security Premium, but only as a trial version that does not recognize my Norton Core Security Plus product key as valid.

Now what?

Re: Confused about how Core Security Plus and other Norton security software interrelate

How many Windows devices have you installed on, and are you only having trouble with one device?

Did you use the Core download from your account on the troubled machine? If you were using the old download for NS, it may not recognize the Core product key.

If you still have issues, you can contact Support via chat and they should be able to sort things out for you.    www.norton.com/chat

Re: Confused about how Core Security Plus and other Norton security software interrelate

Hi @Disciplec

A temporary license is activated until the time you receive and activate Norton Core, after which the Norton Core Security Plus subscription kicks in. :)

And as @peterweb pointed out, just to confirm that the installation went okay, could you send me screenshots of your Norton product's Main UI and About section [Norton Main UI -> Help -> About], through a private message please? Thank you.

Re: Confused about how Core Security Plus and other Norton security software interrelate

the advert says "Norton Core’s subscription helps protect your home network and an unlimited number of your connected devices, including computers and smartphones." now you're saying it's capped at 20? i think most of us easily have more than 20 connected devices, so what happens after we hit 20. we're not protected on the other devices?

See the discussion in This thread.  We are not sure exactly how things are going to end up. We are waiting for @Gayathri_R to get some clarification on this.

What it was originally set up as was you could install the Core Security Plus software on 20 devices, PCs, Macs and mobile devices. The unilimited devices was referring to the IOT, Internet of Things, devices. ie Home automation, lights, thermostats, fridges etc., on which you cannot install software anyway.

ahh yes, or perhaps everything behind the Core is protected because the Core IS the protection (sans software). the software answers the other question i had which was how is my laptop/phone protected when i'm away from home and NOT behind the Core, but another poster made sense of this, so that's good.

Re: Confused about how Core Security Plus and other Norton security software interrelate

The Core does not provide malware protection. That is why you get the Core Security Plus software with your subscription. The core basically hides all your devices from intruders trying to access your computer. The software protects your computers while you surf the net and download/stream stuff.

Re: Confused about how Core Security Plus and other Norton security software interrelate

ok, so it's basically just a router with all the security that we could setup ourselves, already set up and another name for the software that we already have on our systems. hmm.

Re: Confused about how Core Security Plus and other Norton security software interrelate

There are some added features that routers do not have. The Norton Family protection is included in the router allowing you to create accounts for the different users and giving different permissions for each.

If you are technically knowledgeable, you can set up a regular router, along with software on the computers, that can give the same kind of protection.

As with many things these days, people just want to plug and play without having to know what goes on in the background. Core will appeal to this kind of user. Advance users will still be able to tweak some settings to their liking.

Re: Confused about how Core Security Plus and other Norton security software interrelate

Also - The Core does do "Deep Packet Inspection" - which typically means, it fully examines every communication packet that flows on its controlled network for various "problematic content" and unusual routing attempts. If the deep inspection engine (in this case, the Core's engine) "sees" a packet "sourcing point" (a computer, IoT device, or whatever else using the controlled network,) emitting or receiving communication/data packets with potentially offending (triggering) "fingerprints", then that device automatically gets "communication isolated" (by the inspection engine) from further communicating with the rest of the controlled network (LAN) and the devices there-on. The auto-isolation/lockout then remains in effect until such time as an Admin-level person can review the auto-triggered offense (event) and proceed accordingly as to the remedial disposition of the offending device.

Re: Confused about how Core Security Plus and other Norton security software interrelate

Yeah, but the temporary license expires, and if you haven't received the Core to "activate" your Norton Core Security Plus subscription, you're on your own, with no assistance from Norton. I am getting messages from Norton Security (as well as emails from Norton) telling me my "trial" subscription will expire in *4 days*, which is really pathetic given this is *supposed* to be my "complementary" Core Security Plus subscription pending the arrival of the apparently phantom Core router. I haven't heard a peep from Norton about a shipping date, despite pre-ordering back in July.

I've used Norton since the early 1990s, and have always held the software in high regard but this bungled hardware/software roll-out is really beyond belief!!

Re: Confused about how Core Security Plus and other Norton security software interrelate

@CoreNeverComes - Could it be 14 days and not 4? I checked your account and saw that number listed.

@Tony_Weiss

Good day, What's the exactly number Norton Core Security Plus can subscribed within one year? Is it 20 or unlimited amount?

according your previous reply on Jun.26th, it's 20, but the official FAQ pages claim it's unlimited. which one is correct?

Thanks!

I answered your other post as well. It is unlimited number of devices for the install of Core Security Plus software. It was changed from 20 devices some time ago.

@Tony_Weiss

Hi Technical Staff/Experts,

today I use NMS within my android phone, I find some information within  "Get Norton" page confusing me, (e.g. below screenshot)

it shows up to "50" devices can install Norton security.(attachment NMS.pdf )

and I check my Norton account (like below, snapshot)

it show "unlimited" device can install internet security.(attachment myNorton.pdf )

So, what't the exactly number if device I can use Norton security/Norton Mobile Security?

Thanks for your reply

Re: Confused about how Core Security Plus and other Norton security software interrelate

The information given by Norton is that you can install the Software on an unlimited number of devices. This is only referring to installing Norton Core Security Plus, and the Mobile version on computers and mobile devices. This information does not count the number of IOT devices, thermostats, security cameras, etc connected to your Core.

Would a 50 device limit really be a problem for you?
