Connection issues with Microsoft Freelancer when using NAV and Microsoft Vista

When using Norton Antivirus 2009 in Windows Vista Ultimate, I am no longer able
to connect to multiplayer servers in the game Freelancer.  I can still see the
servers in the multiplayer list, but a connection cannot be established.  There
are no virus alerts, and the security history does not show any activity from
NAV that would prevent connection.  Additionally, preventing NAV from activating
at startup does not resolve the connection problem.  However, uninstalling NAV
does correct the issue, but I would prefer a solution that allows me to continue
using this Antivirus software.
It should be noted that using NAV 2009 in Windows XP does not have this issue,
it appears to be the combination of NAV and Vista.
This is a well spread issue in the Freelancer community among several different
Antivirus softwares, with the only solution being to completely uninstall the AV, but this
simply is not an option I would prefer.  Any assistance would be much
appreciated.

Re: Connection issues with Microsoft Freelancer when using NAV and Microsoft Vista

About 2 weeks ago I emailed support on this issue (as per the instructions on the support page http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20081016174111EN&lg=en&seg=hho&ct=us&pvid=nav_2009&selected_nav=5) and have yet to receive a reply.  Does anyone know if I should be trying to e-mail somewhere else?  Even a message that this problem is being looked into would be nice if a fix can't be found soon.

My mistake shannons.  Thank you for preserving the intent of the message in your edit.

DS-181-3, it looks like they aren't passing port number information within the protocol and sending packages to 'listening' ports on your machine. See the Microsoft KB article, Required Network Ports for a Multiplayer Freelancer Game, for specific information. In short, you will have to customize the rules that already exist for Freelancer to allow inbound UDP packets for ports 2300-2400.

Re: Connection issues with Microsoft Freelancer when using NAV and Microsoft Vista

I was under the impression that Norton Antivirus 2009 did not come with a firewall, and thus didn't block any ports.  As far as the Windows firewall is concerned, I have taken those steps to put Freelancer on the exceptions list with no success.  If I am mistaken in thinking NAV does not block ports, can you please point me to a method of opening them as I haven't found one.  Also, since the game works after uninstalling Norton, it's probably safe to assume that I don't have any other program or router blocking it.

I am very confused over this issue as the XP + Norton 09 combination works, and Vista + no Norton works.  So what's special about the Vista + Norton combination that causes the issue?

I think this is a 64bit issue.  It will get worked out.  Is your windows firewall the only one active?  And what was on the system for security software prior to NAV09?  Have you had ANY other network connection issues other than this one?

Re: Connection issues with Microsoft Freelancer when using NAV and Microsoft Vista

Unfortunately, from what I've heard from others in the Freelancer community, it's both a 32 and 64 bit issue.  Currently windows firewall is the only one active, though prevously I used the free Zonealarm (with windows firewall disabled) until I discovered that the free Zonealarm wasn't compatable with 64 bit.  As a note, I also tried Freelancer with windows firewall completely disabled, and still no success.

I have always used Norton on my computers.  I had been using windows XP and upgraded to NAV09 with no problems, then I upgraded to Vista and continued using NAV09 during which I discovered this problem.  I have had no other network connection issues, though Freelancer is the only game I play online, so my attempted network access has been simply getting on the internet.

This has been a well known issue in freelancer communities since vista first came out, and I had hoped it would be worked out by the time I bothered to upgrade.  Since it had not, I'm now hoping that maybe it was due to a lack of bug reporting.  If you simply google "vista freelancer" you'll see many freelancer mod sites with "how to connect" pages for Vista users that have lists of antivirus programs that prevent Freelancer from connecting, this includes Norton and a few other AV programs (probably shouldn't list the others since these are Norton forums)

Since I still haven't gotten a reply yet from support, I was wondering if anyone who had read this thread was looking into the issue?

DS-181-3, I'm sorry to take so long getting back to you, I was on vacation for a couple of days. I'm also sorry that I missed the fact that you're using NAV and not NIS. You are correct that NAV does not have a firewall. It does have Intrusion Prevention however. If you disable Intrusion Prevention, does the problem go away? If not, then I'd like work with you via the Private Messenger system (the in the upper right hand corner of any community page) to try a few test scenarios.

Re: Connection issues with Microsoft Freelancer when using NAV and Microsoft Vista

I completely understand, we all take time off now and then ;)  Just glad to hear you're back.

I tried disabling the intrusion prevention, but that had no effect.  I then tried disabling every possible setting I could find... still didn't work.  I then disabled the norton service in services.msc and again, no luck.  Finally, just to make sure I didn't have a different problem, I uninstalled norton again, and then I could connect.  Right now I'm reinstalling Norton so that we can try the test senarios.  Hopefully the couple tests I just tried will give you a better idea of what senerios might work.  I'll keep an eye on the Private Message area.

[edit] Just as an update, after reinstalling norton, I'm back to no connection to the server.  Just in case you were wondering whether a fresh install fixed the issue

Re: Connection issues with Microsoft Freelancer when using NAV and Microsoft Vista

For anyone who was following this thread, it appears to be an issue with a Microsoft networking filter.  In Vista, they changed this filter in such a way that prevents Freelancer from connecting whenever you use an Antivirus that employs this filter layer.  The symantec team has sent a bug report to Microsoft to look into this matter.
