Context menu not showing "Scan Now".

Please help me solve the problem.
I perform a clean installation of Windows 10 Professional. Installed Norton Security Deluxe (version 22.6.0.142).
In Windows Explorer, with a disc Norton Backup (although my version of norton security without backup function).
The item "scan" is missing from the context menu (by right-clicking on a file or folder).

The other file managers (like Total Commander and others) is not established.

How to return items to the context menu in Norton?
How to remove a Norton Buckup drive from Windows Explorer?

Re: Context menu not showing "Scan Now".

In Windows Explorer, when you right click on a file or folder, do you see Norton Security Deluxe? If so, clicking on that should bring up the option for Scan Now.

Re: Context menu not showing "Scan Now".

@ogk: E.G., you can do the following:

  • You can even right click on a shortcut file on yr desktop.
  • Locate "Norton Security", enter it, and then launch "Scan Now".
  • For more info, you launch File Insight later.

Re: Context menu not showing "Scan Now".

If you are not seeing the context menu item like 20750065 is showing in the image above, you may have some corruption in your Norton product. You can get a fresh install by running the Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool.    www.norton.com/nrnr

Be sure you read the Before you begin section, and run LiveUpdate, restarting as necessary, until no updates are available.

Re: Context menu not showing "Scan Now".

Having the same issue with Windows 10 home after upgrading from Windows 8.1.

Norton context menus completely missing.  They were present before upgrading to Windows 10.

Have reinstalled Norton my self, and spent almost a hour while Norton remote support repeated the same steps after I tried to report the issue (eventually they gave up and disconnected after saying your Norton is Fixed).

Windows is fully patched.

Whats strange, is that windows defender shows up in the context menu; but its reported as off if selected.

Not sure if its an upgrade issue, incompatibility with something installed, or a bug.

Ran the Get Support option under support, and it says its fixed 1 item (results below); but the issue is still present.

Norton Security with Backup

Windows 10 Home

Norton Autofix Results: 1 item(s)
Installation :: Success

Any ideas?

You may be seeing the same that I suggested to ogk, in that there may be some corruption of your Norton product. Unfortunately, there were many users that had issues with their Norton products after upgrading to Win 10. Reinstalling usually fixed any issues.

Defender is turned off by Norton and any other real time security software as part of their installation. That way you will not have more than one real time security scanner active.

In Windows Control Panel, Security tab, is Norton listed for all protections, or is Windows Defender still showing on any of them?

Re: Context menu not showing "Scan Now".

I solved the problem myself.
Error disappearance Norton context menu appears after using Snappy Driver Installer.
After updating all drivers using this program, the context menu disappears, and the Norton Backup disk appeared.

P.S. The process to reinstall Norton (using Norton Removal and Reinstall Tool) did not help - the result was the same: a context menu was missing!

Re: Context menu not showing "Scan Now".

Paul (P Wll),

I'm curious whats adding the options: repair, uninstall, troubleshoot, and especially "Select Left File for Compare"?

ogk,

Have you tried uninstalling the driver program?

Hi Peterweb

Unfortunately Norton Product was uninstalled twice (once using the reinstall option mentioned above, and once with a uninstaller tool + fresh install) with exactly the same results.

The software does look to be running (Hopefully); just missing the context menus

Aside: Just ran the eicar test file through and Norton detected it in text, and zip stored on pc (So protection looks to be working :-)

Re: Context menu not showing "Scan Now".

Hi DaveH

repair, uninstall, troubleshoot,

These are the default OS context menu's for MSI (Windows Installer packages).  Believe I was right clicking on one as my sample

"Select Left File for Compare"

This is Beyond File Compare (scooter software).  Used to compare all types of files.  Blows away MS's graphical Windiff and MS's command line fc.exe tools.

As a new more accurate test, I've right clicked on "picasa39-setup.exe" and I get the following (note that windows defender is referenced here but is disabled as far as I can tell)

Sincerely

Re: Context menu not showing "Scan Now".

If your Scooter software adds context menu items, it may be conflicting with the Norton items. This would not be the first time this has happened with software that adds context menu items has had this issue. In the past it was the other software that was causing the issue.

Can you try removing your Scooter software to see if you regain the Norton items.

Re: Context menu not showing "Scan Now".

Hi Peterweb

Here's whats been done since my last post

  1. Norton uninstalled and reinstalled at least 6 times (Norton was uninstalled and machine rebooted before any other apps where uninstalled)
  2. Noted that Norton corrupts windows defender services digital signatures while Norton is installed (ok once Norton removed - Guess Norton wants to make sure that defender is dead while its around)
  3. Removed Scooter software
  4. Removed Itunes and all the stuff that comes with it.
  5. Removed trial MS Office
  6. Removed Java (not needed)
  7. Ran Kaspersky Cleanup tool (Kaspersky was installed before Norton was installed while OS was at windows 8.1.  Was uninstalled by default Kaspersky uninstaller but looks like there were some left overs which were identified and removed today.)
  8. Upgraded Acronis HD 2014 to 2015 version (Wasn't showing as incomparable; but Acronis recommended upgrading to the 2015 version.

Notes:

  • Lenovo Flex 2 15 laptop running 8 gig ram, and a 1 TB Muskin SSD
  • Windows 8.1 Home OS (Stock Lenovo image) upgraded to Windows 10 (On the 31st of May)
  • Machine was running as expected before upgrade (running Windows 8.1 and Norton with no issues)

Not sure how to proceed?  Maybe open a ticket with norton support (non chat way)

Any other suggestions on things to try?

Re: Context menu not showing "Scan Now".

@Wil: Personally, (security) software conflicts caused your trouble here. Please make sure you have restarted your 8.1 when said Scooter, Kaspersky (what? AV? IS? Total Protection?) - Plz feel free to detail those two programs you've removed.

then, perform the reinstall of Norton Security Deluxe as d admin user, follow the onscreen wizards, rebooting yr 8.1 is kindly recommended when the reinstallation is completed, as well.

As for contacting Norton Support, plz trying the following:

  • Log on yr own Norton account.
  • Hit http://norton.com/chat
  • Wait while the page is loading automatically.
  • Complete the table and you'll be good to go.

@Wil: Personally, (security) software conflicts caused your trouble here

Original KIS was removed before Norton install; but Left overs could be a possible issue (since removed).

Aside: Norton was running fine before the windows 8.1 to 10 upgrade.   Norton was also installed to more than one machine which was previously running Kaspersky.

Tried that before posting in the forums.  Support just spent over an hour uninstalling and reinstalling with the same results I had with my initial reinstall. Looking to get access to 2nd level support.

einstall of Norton Security Deluxe as d admin user

Always :-) (actually right click and runas Administrator as this then runs as true full admin)

I'm pretty sure that something happened during the windows 10 upgrade (File or Registry ACLs dependency issues or missing files/keys, or the upgrade going bump in the night.)

Thinking I might roll it back (Maybe easier just to restore the Image), and then remove Norton, run the KIS manual remove/cleanup tool, perform the 10 upgrade again, and then re-install Norton.

OR try and fine a norton tool to rip out all Norton left overs (always left overs) and try the install again.

Know of any Norton approved tools to do a post uninstall Cleanup?

Thanks for you reply.

Ruff time line of what was done.

  1. Was Running Kaspersky on 2 Windows 7 Home Premium desktops, 1 windows 10 Pro desktop, & 1 windows 8.1 Home laptop using (windows 10 compatible Kaspersky version KIS in use)
  2. Kaspersky Key was about to expire
  3. Reviewed replacements and purchase 10 user Norton Premium license (For web managed parental control, Android and Windows support, at a better priced per device cost)
  4. Uninstalled Kaspersky (using standard add/remove programs) on above devices  and then installed Norton Premium on a each of the above devices (All uninstalled/installed exactly the same way)
  5. Ran in above configuration for weeks without any issues or missing functionality
  6. Recently Backed up Windows 8.1 laptop using True Image, restored Image to a new 1 TB SSD, and then proceeded to upgrade the laptop to windows 10
  7. Noted Norton file context windows missing
  8. Uninstalled, re-installed Norton myself
  9. Contacted Norton Chat support who spent about an hour remotely (Log Me in Rescue) removing and reinstalling Norton,  When I showed them that the issue was still there, was told my Norton was ok, and then they disconnected (was underwhelmed by the support)
  10. Started to posted in this forum
  11. Again Removed Norton, Restarted laptop
  12. Uninstalled stuff/Updated stuff (in prev post)
  13. Ran Kaspersky cleanup tool.  Said that something was removed (Not full program.. Most likely left overs that ALL programs seem to leave behind.  Search the file system/registry after uninstalling Norton and I bet you'll find something.. Logs, registry keys, orphan dlls, ect. )
  14. Rebooted Machine
  15. Re-installed Norton
  16. Issue still present

Re: Context menu not showing "Scan Now".

Tgere is one thing no one has suggested yet, as you are running Win 10.

If you use Windows 8/8.1 or 10, there can be an issue with the Fast Start feature.. See more information here.

Re: Context menu not showing "Scan Now".

Hello P Wil

When you update  to Windows 10, you often do need to reinstall your Norton product. To get a thorough uninstall of your Norton product I would do the following. Use a Windows Administrator Account to do all of the steps. Turn off Fast Startup.

1. Back up Identity Safe if you are using that feature

2. Remove Norton product using the Control Panel method

3. Restart.

4. Use the Norton Removal Tool       www.norton.com/nrt   will give a more thorough cleaning up than Norton Remove and Reinstall Tool.

5 Restart.

6.Reinstall your Norton product.       www.norton.com/latestnsbu      Please have key handy. Run Live Update until no more updates, restarting as necessary. When all done with updates, restart one more time. Go over Settings and setup as you desire. Turn on management

Thanks.

Re: Context menu not showing "Scan Now".

Bingo.   Issued solved  (Doh.. Didn't even think on the fast start feature -  Thanks Peterweb!)

So some combination of the following items most likely fixed it

  1. Uninstalled Norton via Windows Add/Remove programs
  2. Restarted OS (fast start most likely in play)
  3. ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Rem... executed  (didn't spec the version but was at the point that I was going to restore an image.. so
  4. Restarted windows ensuring OS was fully shutdown - Clicked Restart (while holding down Shift)
  5. Reinstalled Norton
  6. Rebooted (fast start most likely in play)
  7. Check... Success!

Only issue I can see... Duplicate "File Insight".. Think I can live with this...

Thanks for everyone's help!

Re: Context menu not showing "Scan Now".

@Paul, I too did the following tests, trying to reproduce the issue U met - I did not use K or N Removal Tool:

1. I installed NS using its express options on a clean 10 (not upgraded from any old Win OS) > installed BC 4 > got the following img:

BC works well w/ NS.

2. I installed BC 4 first on a clean Win 7 > installed then uninstalled NS; restarted 7 > installed then uninstalled KIS 2017 ( .net 4.5 was required.)  > reinstalled NS > got the following pics.

(NOTE: option for scanning has been disabled when KIS was installed. Reason? Forget it...)

I can use Scan Now in d problem-free way.

3. installed KIS17 on 8 Enterprise 9200, uninstalled it; restarted > installed NS, run NS direct, without restartin' 8 > got this:

Closing words: yr upgraded OS should be the possible reason why you HAD trouble using Norton's "Scan Now".

Sorry... I don't have that enough time in the day for testing BC vs. NS in an upgraded 10 ( 7 or 8/ 8.1 -> 10)

Update or not? Hehe, just kidding... Time for a break....

Good to hear yr issue has been fixed.

Re: Context menu not showing "Scan Now".

Very good work fixing that, I have been following the topic and was convinced it had something to do with the windows defender listing still being in the menu but you proved me wrong.

I also spent considerable time today trying to figure out where Norton adds it'self into the content menu.  I couldn't find it in the usual places in the registry and it doesn't show up in the Nirsoft tools to view all the menu items and properties.

Glad you got it working, sorry you had to spend so much time figuring it out.

P Will

Glad that you finally found a solution from all the suggestions.

einstall of Norton Security Deluxe as d admin user

Always :-) (actually right click and runas Administrator as this then runs as true full admin)

This is not exactly true as you can see using your Norton product as an example. Using a Standard Windows user account, start Norton Security, and click on settings. Click on any of the individual features, like Firewall, and you will see that the options are all greyed out, and you cannot change anything. Now close NS and try opening it again from the desktop icon using your right click, and Run as Administrator. Try the settings again, and you will see that your settings options are still greyed out, and you can make no changes.

Now sign out of your Standard account, and sign into your Admin account. Now open your NS and settings. You will be able to change any option you need.

So Run as Administrator does help in many ways, but it only gives admin access to a specific file or installer to do what it needs. It is not like you are running in an admin account.

Things happen. Export/Backup your Norton Password Manager data.

Re: Context menu not showing "Scan Now".

Hi Peter

This is not exactly true as you can see using your Norton product as an example. Using a Standard Windows user account, start Norton Security, and click on settings. Click on any of the individual features, like Firewall, and you will see that the options are all greyed out, and you cannot change anything

This access is most likely by Norton design and not due to actual windows users rights.  Pretty sure that the Norton GUI is running in the current user context, and then securely communicating with the Norton core application running in a context with full rights (system context?)

Access is coded based on what OS User rights are assigned to current user.  IE. Since your not in the admin group, I will disable/grey certain access/options.

I've seen this above behavior with "running as" admin (Where it doesn't work) with a few other programs (google chrome's sandbox).  I believe it is Norton doing something wacky (intentional or otherwise).

I used to support machines running ESET, which also blocked a lot of functionality as non admin, which is good to protect the software from un-approved changes (especially in a locked down environment); but bad/painful when you have to log out (or switch users) to make valid changes for current standard user (especially when trouble shooting A/V & Firewall issues as standard user which work fine as an admin user).

Now close NS and try opening it again from the desktop icon using your right click, and Run as Administrator. Try the settings again, and you will see that your settings options are still greyed out, and you can make no changes.

Pretty sure that if you try to run the Norton GUI twice, it has the smarts to detect that its already running, and just switch to it (or just do nothing)

With ESET,  was still running in the current user context.  Running the ESET GUI as Admin would see this process running and switch to it, therefore opening the GUI up as the current user.

Killing the current user context EST processes (a subset of processes relating to the GUI), then running the GUI (as admin) would allow Admin access while not logging out of the standard user account.  Aside: ESET eventually closed that hole by blocking the termination of the ESET process (which Norton also seems to do when I tested today)

So Run as Administrator does help in many ways, but it only gives admin access to a specific file or installer to do what it needs. It is not like you are running in an admin account.

Yep, thats the beauty of it.  Can run just one program in a higher context than what the current user is at, so that other current context process aren't also running as admin.  Usually works quiet well.  Its too bad that Norton breaks the default functionality.

To Norton Developers:  Should have an option to run the GUI as admin, or have a override password (configurable while in as admin) to allow  full setting access (while running as non admin)
