Controlled Folder Access

The Windows 10 Fall Creators Update is rolling out now with a security feature that can prevent ransomware from encrypting your files. The new anti-ransomware feature, called Controlled folder access, is now becoming widely available. However, it appears to be only available to folks using the Windows Defender Security feature and not to folks using software such as Norton Internet Security. It would be great if there was a way for Norton Internet Security customers to use this anti-ransomware feature.

If there is a way to enable this functionality and continue to use Norton Internet Security, please let me know.

If there isn't a way for the Windows feature and Norton Internet Security to co-exist, then perhaps Norton should consider adding a similar feature to its product.

Does Norton Security have an option for "Controlled Folder Access"? Windows Defender has this Exploit Option.

I doubt that it is necessary for Symantec to add a similar feature into its product! You simply can't compare the grade of protection that you get from Norton Security!

Norton Security actually offers real protection against zero day threats and works completely different than any other antivirus software! It will simply not allow any type of code to suddenly encrypt and erase any of your files!

Windows Defender has a very basic modus operandi and checks files vs a blacklist, Windows Defender can also be circumvented!

Norton Security is a very smart and comprehensive all-round Security Suite that checks a file on execution for any malicious code vs a blacklist and a whitelist! Norton Security is so smart and comprehensive that it blocks any malicious code from doing any arm even if you have excluded malware!

No one is arguing that Norton Security isn't a better product. We're just saying it would be a nice feature for Norton to add.

It would truly be great news if the claims you make about Norton Security were 100% TRUE!! I have been using Norton security products for many, many years and have confidence in them, that's why I keep using them.  But at the same time I would be very NAIVE to believe that your claims about the product are 100% true.

It would be a very simple matter for a Symantec spokesperson to come forward and tell us that Norton Security is so secure that a feature such as Controlled Folder Access is not required, and back that statement up with a guarantee.

Why wat for Symantec to confirm my claims about Norton Security? Check out the results on independent test labs for yourself! My claims are supported by all the major antivirus test labs! By adding something like Controlled Folder Access, you would be opening a different can of worms! Far too many users are having issues with Controlled Folder Access!

I just want to be able to give a particular older application permission to change a particular folder. The instructions I have are to make changes to "controlled folder access" in Windows Defender, but access to these settings are disabled if you have Norton installed.

How do I give a particular application permission to make changes to a particular folder? I honestly don't care how superior Norton is or is not to Windows Defender. I just want my older software to run.

Does anyone know how to do this under Norton? Or do I have to uninstall Norton and install a different antivirus package to accomplish this?

"Instructions" from where?  .... source?

What message/s are you seeing from Norton? 
How is Norton blocking an application making changes to a folder?

The "instructions" were instructions to get the older software to work (Final Fantasy 7 on Steam if that matters).

Okay, I'm not knowing Final Fantasy 7 nor Steam.

Aha! I figured out my problem. Thanks for your help!

It turns out that the problem was not related to Norton at all. I needed to change a folder permission (it was set to "read only") and then run two program files in compatibility mode. Thanks!
