Creating a link to a specific post within another thread.

How do you create a link to a specific post within another thread? In some replies, a user will say 'please see this post for details' and when you click on the 'this post' link, it will open a new browser window which focuses on a specific post, wherever it's located, within another thread.

What is the process for creating a link like this in your reply?

Re: Creating a link to a specific post within another thread.

Hi elsewhere,

Please do the following: go to the post to which you want to link in your own message; go to "Options" of that post, then to "Highlight this message". The page will reload in your browser, displaying the URL to that specific post alone in your browser address bar, and the post will be highlighted in grey (the background will turn grey). Now copy that URL from the browser bar and paste it in your post - and when someone clicks on that link, they will be lead directly to that post without having to scroll down the thread or go burrowing for the post in a several-page thread.

Also, please read Allen_K's great post (I used the "highlight this message" feature to link directly to Allen_K's post) over here (especially the last half of his post):

It is thanks to Allen_K's post that I myself learnt how to link directly to a specific post :-D

Re: Creating a link to a specific post within another thread.

I do it slightly differently to Yaso's method in that I just go to the message I want to take you to and I copy the subject in the the message thread:

but I use the threaded format option under Board Options since that shows who is replying to whom -- or rather it would if everyone used this mode and not the linear format that I detest!

It works just as well with a message in a different thread or even a different forum here in the Norton system:

Re: Link in email notification to " View this Message"

The trick there, in order not to lose your place in the thread where you want to insert the link is to use the function to open in another TAB, if your browser has tabbed browsing as so many do, and open the message you want to refer to in that second TAB, copy the subject and then go back to your reply in the first TAB.
