Credit Card cvv or Security code

I am curious why Norton Security no longer has the field to store the CVV or Security code for your credit cards? I now have to store it in the comment field which doesn't feel as secure to me.  Do you plan on reimplementing this field (which remained hidden until you chose to show it) or do we have to keep this sensitive information in, what appears to be, a less secure field?

Re: Credit Card cvv or Security code

When this field was removed, security reasons were quoted. I cannot find the posts or remember if there were any other details given at the time. I think it just ensures that you actually have the credit card in hand when filling in the information, and not someone who was able to access your PC.

You can check through the product suggestions forum to see if someone has already suggested a return of this feature. If not, you can start your own suggestion.

The field now used would be no less secure, as it is saved in the same vault as it was before.

The PC version has the credit card code field. The app does not have the field. It was replaced by the comment field on September 17, 2014 with no mention of why the credit card code was dropped. Extremely stupid on Norton's part.

I just checked the version on my Win 7 Ultimate SP1 with Norton Security with Backup and there is no field for the credit card code. It too shows the comment field which will not fill into the credit card verification code field on a form.

I still have verification number field w NIS Local Vault
Can you copy paste CVV from comment field to form with NSBU
CVV was removed for your security so that no one else can use the details in case your PC is open.
As the credit card is filled however CVV is not auto filled because the payment will process only when the all details are filled.
CVV is to be filled manually so that it can be secure if anyone else is using your PC.
I appreciate in theory your vault is under your control ... vault protocol for CVV is manual fill.

Thanks bjm_

Just checked my NIS on another system, and as you say, the CVV is still there.

Re: Credit Card cvv or Security code

LOL: I consider not having my CVV on file anywhere to be a big plus for security. I always hesitate to make an online purchase when the vendor asks for my CVV. Many vendors don't. I consider the CVV as the last line of defense against illegal misuse or stealing of credit card data.

Just my 2 cents

A good idea would be to introduce a Paypal. Of course, in Poland, I buy online bank transfer, but Paypal can also be useful. Not everyone has a debit card, you can pay on the internet.

Up until awhile ago Amazon didn't ask for a CVV number. How secure is that? No one could explain why it didn't request a CVV.

Re: Credit Card cvv or Security code

bjm_ Your solution fails to answer my original comment. The replacement of a field with information by a comment field was dumb on Norton's part. This thread also indicates that the field replacement was not uniform across all platforms. Therefore, Norton is not only dumb but inconsistent. Now a user can only save their code by entering it in the comment field. Why didn't Norton just add a new field, rather than replace an existing field? When I ask my programming friends, their one word reply was "lazy".

Why did this change?

  • We wanted to offer a more flexible Credit Card Comments field, that lets you choose the kind of useful credit card information that you want to store.

Re: Credit Card cvv or Security code

I'm in agreement.  This was a very bad idea.  Now I have to retrieve my wallet every time I want to make a purchase at a site.  Also the comment field is not coded out and anyone nearby can see it.  It also doesn't auto-fill any longer.  I dislike the update.  It was a horrible decision by Norton to remove a field that is USED ALMOST EVERY TIME A CARD IS ENTERED.  PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!!

Re: Credit Card cvv or Security code

The purpose of the CVV is to prove to online merchants that you actually have physical possession of the card.  If your credit card number is stolen, requiring a CVV helps to prevent fraudulent transactions.  Convenience always comes at the expense of security, so anything that can enter that number without actually looking at the back of the card is a potential weakness.  You are supposed to have to take the card out of your wallet - that is the whole idea.

Re: Credit Card cvv or Security code

Ok, so my vault is not secure enough and those that can hack in to my computer and steal my numbers and use my card on a lot of sites and if I put my number in the comments section then they will be able to use it on all sights.  Just real inconvenient to deter thieves from using it on all sights.  Believe me, they already know which sites that will take just the numbers without the security code.  I do not store my cc online for that reason.  I only have my cards stored on my local computer and would still like the option of adding my cvv to my accounts.  I just missed being able to make a payment online because I left my wallet in the car.  It was optional to begin with so why shouldn't we have the choice to add it or not?

Leaving your wallet in your car is not very safe either. !

Re: Credit Card cvv or Security code

What a load of excrement. Convenience is not at the expense of security unless you are a complete moron. Its this simple:

Open vault

Make purchase

Close vault

No security risk. Just a STUPID KNEEJERK reaction by Norton without asking for user feedback prior to screwing over the users. Just like taking away the option for a local vault and forcing the users to a cloud vault. I still keep a frequently updated local copy because a time will come when I need to restore it and guaranteed the Norton cloud will be unavailable for some cosmic reason!

I am currently shopping for Nortons replacement because I am tired of MORONS making my decisions for me! Any suggestions out there?

Re: Credit Card cvv or Security code

Well yeah I have one. Since you're so big on CONVENIENCE rather than understanding security manuvers, why not just make it even more convenient for yourself? Don't use security programs at all, that way you don't mess with ANY security program and save some time. Ya know, security and the extra steps only come from MORONS, right? To me, you're the M***n. How freakin hard is it to either write down a CVV or get a wallet. You do it everywhere else don't you? How often do you buy from Symantec for this to be a 'HUGE PROBLEM'? Personally I use mostly 1 card, and for 3 #'s, its pretty easy to remember a 3 digit code. Sheesh, some people complain just to complain, and that's ALL. They're called Bashers.

Re: Credit Card cvv or Security code

What is your problem? I want not talking to you. I was complaining about Norton making unnecessary decisions. Nothing was broke so nothing needed changed but Norton did it any way. I do not buy from Symantec but I guess you do. Truthfully I have no idea what you are talking about. I have used the vault for years with no issues or security problems.  I do not complain just to complain. I have over 45 years in IT and I know what is a security risk and what is not. Norton has a bad habit of making bad decisions without asking the user community is there is a problem that needs fixed, but after they do that they do not listen to the users and put it back. In my opinion that makes them the moron.
