Defender Updates Keep Failing

I just installed Norton Internet Security on a friend's brand new Windows 10 PC.  I know this is the NS forum, but I have the same issue on my new W10 Surface with Norton Security.

I am getting the Windows Defender update failing issue on this new PC, too.  I tried the suggested solutions from this forum (disable Fast Start, reboot, manually disable Defender before installing Norton, etc) with no fix.

I just had a frustrating chat with Norton Support; they kept repeating Norton is active and Defender disabled (which I already know)and said the Defender updates failing is not a known issue.  I tried to explain that this is more an annoyance than anything.

I'm wondering if anyone else still has this issue, and if Norton is not working on it how can I escalate the issue?

This is what annoys me about windows.Things don't always work 100%.When you install a third party solution like Norton,or something else, windows defender is supposed to disable itself. However,it does not always do this.It shouldn't be dialing out for updates if it's been disabled.I used the group policy editor to disable it on all my windows 10 machines. There are other ways.I found group policy editor to be the best, most convenient way to do so.The following page is a  decent resource to turn to if you are looking for ways to disable Windows Defender: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/uninstall-windows-defender

Re: Defender Updates Keep Failing

Thanks, I saw that as a workaround. It's a bit draconian and then I'd have to remember to re-enable it if I later removed Norton. I also had a sudden slowdown of Edge, IE, and apps a few days after I installed Norton Security on my new Surface Pro 4. Removing Norton and reinstalling Windows fixed it. I'm not sure it was Norton, but I haven't had anything similar since without it. So for now, I'll wait and see if Norton comes up with a newer version that may address those issues. I'm comfortable with Defender and careful browsing. Thanks again for the feedback.

Re: Defender Updates Keep Failing

Run the Norton Removal Tool, apply the fix to completely turn off all aspects of Windows Defender at Windows Defender - Turn On or Off in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums then re-install Norton.

Afterwards, Windows Update will no longer attempt to download updates for Windows Defender.

I suspect that the problem is the result of an undetected Norton installation error.  That would explain why some users have not experienced this problem and why others have reported that the problem was cured by reinstalling Norton [in some cases after manually disabling all Windows Defender entries in Settings, Update & security, Windows Defender before even starting the reinstallation].

Re: Defender Updates Keep Failing

As I stated in my post, I did that with no effect- the Defender update attempts continued.  Apparently that fix only works for some computers.  The issue has not occurred on another of my PCs, so I'm still running NS on it.

"As I stated in my post" - you must have used invisible ink.

Re: Defender Updates Keep Failing

hi BajaBoojum

I've only come across this problem on one of the computers updated which includes a Surface Pro 2 (not 4). Turning off WD before installing Norton security has worked on each of them. I appreciate you have tried this. I do not like altering things in the OS like suggested by Supersjdan although I know this has worked for a number of users.

I wonder if you have tried the following or if indeed it would solve your problem.

Uninstall Norton, I usually carry out a full uninstall using Windows Uninstaller then running the Norton Removal Tool.

Once you have done this run Windows Update to download the latest WD definitions then download and reinstall Norton turning off WD before installing. You have no doubt seen that there are three "slider" controls for WD I have turned each of them off leaving Real Time Protection until last as this will stop you from changing the others settings if done first.

Apologies if you have already done this.

Re: Defender Updates Keep Failing

i also had warning messages about no firewall on a recently purchased pc, even though norton security reported all was well. [ i had first uninstalled free trial macaffee]. The solution for me was to disable fast start via power settings / advanced. So far, no issues, but the next w10 patch might well switch it back on
