DESOT.EXE HELP

Can anyone help?

Had a bit of a problem with laptop running XP a couple of days ago down to some malware I think.  I have Norton 360 which has fixed a lot of the problems it caused but a number of windows open on boot up showing c:\windows\system32.desot.exe.  This never used to happen.  PLUS many of the shortcuts and Start Menu Items won't work.  MSN Messenger only works if you select the Live Messenger icon through Internet Explorer (on tool bar) but other short cuts to Skype or even Add and Remove Programs through the Control Panel no longer work.

I have tried running a malware scan program (free version) but it wouldn't run (just like Skype etc). I thought I might be able to rename desot.exe but am not sure whether that would cause more damage than good or even whether that is the real problem.

Greatful to anyone with any ideas.

desot.exe belongs to rogue "Windows Antivirus Pro"

Re: DESOT.EXE HELP

Hi Wsadler,

Welcome to Norton Community!

This problem can happen due to two reasons - an associated system file is damaged or if your computer got infected by WindowsAntiVirusPro (a rogue program). You can first try the System File Checker utility, click Start > Run, type SFC /SCANNOW and click OK to scan/repair all system files. If the problem persists, you may have to perform a repair installation of Windows XP as this problem happens when the system files are damaged. You can find more instructions to perform a repair installation in this LINK. Let us know how it goes.

Re: DESOT.EXE HELP

Thank  you Yogesh ... all of that makes sense and yes it was that WindowsAntiVirusPro rubbish that came up just before all the problems started.

I ran the scan as suggested but the desot window flashed up briefly again so now I shall hunt down an Windows XP CD.  As happens all too often these days the laptop came with preinstalled Windows and a recovery disk - not much good.

I will let you know if it works (which I expect it will) once I have sourced a CD.

your advice is sincerely appreciated.

What is the point of that.

It's the fact the Rogue disable the use of system tools like Task manager, etc. and stops the starting of MBAM etc.

Re: DESOT.EXE HELP

Hi

Now go here http://homepages.slingshot.co.nz/~crutches/TaskManager/ Download the file (save as)   TaskManagerFIX.reg

Then click and add it to the registry.

Now Try the task manager

Not sure how this helps.  Task Manager works but other programs don't.

Re: DESOT.EXE HELP

I know all we did was get task manager back

In Task Manager click the processes tab and end the process like

ANTI_files.exe

dbsinit.exe

Windows Antivirus Pro.exe

Quads-I wanted to let you know this link brought my task manager back which as not worked for months. More importantly, someone added a new file to the link a couple weeks ago called "fixexe" which fixes the desot.exe problem and allows programs to work again. Once this was done I was able to run my program which cleaned my computer and everything is working again. My computer was locked down for almost week before I read this post and was able to fix it. Thanks for your help!
