Disable Antivirus Auto-Protect Greyed Out

I am running Norton Security with Backup version 22.2.0.31.  The ability to disable the antivirus auto protect is greyed out and I can not access it.  Is there any way to correct this problem?

Look inside Settings > Antivirus.   Do you see grey settings...eg:

try reboot see what happens...

Re: Disable Antivirus Auto-Protect Greyed Out

Thank you for your quick response.  I did see the "*These settings cannot be changed due to a pending remediation action.  Please restart your computer to resolve this issue."  However, once I restarted my computer and opened the same menu, the exact same message still appeared at the bottom.  Is there something that I may be doing incorrectly?

Thanks again,

Re: Disable Antivirus Auto-Protect Greyed Out

I have read through each of the posted links but to no avail have I been able to find a solution.  I disabled the fast startup for Windows 8.1.  Is there anyway to just kill the program through windows task manager and then restart it after I complete my task?

Re: Disable Antivirus Auto-Protect Greyed Out

If reboot does not sort greyed out....Well, for me.  I found the program that was triggering grey settings.  Then I Excluded program from Auto-protect.  If you read through...Threads I referenced.  That's what affected users have done.  The trick is finding the program.  For me.  Seems to be programs that place an Icon in the Taskbar near Norton Icon.  I've been able to sort greyed out by Excluding the downloaded file for the trigger program saved in my downloads folder.   You did not find a Solution as there is no Solution.  There is however a work around.  To find and Exclude the trigger.   In theory settings grey mid Norton process to prevent any change to settings.  Until Norton completes process.  Well, for some users.  Greyed out appears by a trigger file.   Those that notice grey settings and reboot does not sort.  Have been able to sort by finding and Excluding the trigger file.  Then reboot.  If correct trigger is Excluded.  Upon reboot Settings are no longer greyed.
Task Manager will not kill Norton.

@MattNC79

How are you progressing..?

Re: Disable Antivirus Auto-Protect Greyed Out

No progress at all. None.  Considering uninstalling Norton.  Nothing I do or have read to do seems to correct the problem. It's very frustrating.

Ah, ... Sorry.   So, you can't find trigger program.    Unless, your issue is really malware...pending remediation ..?    That was the initial concern.  The message as you know suggests pending malware remediation.  ... and last I'm aware...

This reply by Liliana_Gaspar <here> prompts << it is normal that Norton's settings are greyed out when a remediation is happening>> and this reply by Liliana_Gaspar <here> prompts << Note the "issue" is still under analysis. >>

Have you perused "issue" with Norton Support.  I'll imagine they'll re-install (if you allow remote)

Re: Disable Antivirus Auto-Protect Greyed Out

Have this problem a few times & usually a restart will fix things but yesterday after contacting support about a different problem I found the disable auto protect greyed out again, this time a restart didn't change anything nor a turning the computer fully off then on, I had to uninstall then reinstall to fix it.

No malware & am not running PowerDVD, will check my programs but tbh it's just another annoyance which is putting me off Norton.

The only icons on each side of Norton's is the windows 10 notification & Malwarebytes, I have removed mb but no change.
Nothing listed under unresolved risks, fast startup is off on the machine.
I thought it might've been that I ha a failed backup as it appeared to correct itself after erunning the backup but it happened again & everything fine backup-wise.

I don't know much about Unchecky but it was  acquired by someone in April 2015. In any case is in beta still although I see there is a Beta 0.3 .

Since it works by interfering with the normal workings of user/product interaction (see http://unchecky.com/ ) I would suggest that, as a diagnostic tool, you temporarily disable it or uninstall it, preferably with a real uninstall and clean up tool like Revo Uninstaller and see if this affects the loss of a normal user choice.

FWIW

I don't see any indication of what Version of Windows you are using nor of what version of which Norton Product, at least in this thread. This would be useful to know.

mine is 3.7.5 beta it updates on its own.Unchecky is a software that helps stop bundles(PUP's) you dont want installed on your PC

Um, if File Insight reflects low trust or reputation.   Then Exclude by Auto Protect and reboot.  Or, simply Exclude > Reboot and see what happens.  No harm.  Easily removed from Exclude.

I know what it does -- I gave the link to its website.

I also looked at reviews on it and two on YouTube with active videos of it being used both the previous one and the current .3 one were not enthusiastic -- on a range of downloads (mostly from mainly only too wellknown download sites) where the reviewer kept track of what was displayed as PUPs on a normal install and then detected as PUPs by unchecky and what was not and so was still there after using unchecky the most detected was about 50% of the total.

On the earlier version he recommended not trying it but liked the concept and on the current version which detected just over 50% and stopped them he was slightly more enthusiastic but hoped it would continue to improve since what the results meant was that nearly 50% PUPs still got through and if you wanted to avoid this you had to study every screen visually as you would without unchecky and still had to do with unchecky.

However what I originally wrote was not a judgment but a considered technical advice on troubleshooting, which I've done a lot of, and that was to uninstall unchecky and see if it affected your problem of not seeing certain options .... which  is what unchecky is looking for.

If uninstalling it has no effect on the problem then by all means install unchecky again ..... but bear in mind that since it conditions you to rely on it and not look for check boxes it is itself potentially worse than knowing that you have to be careful and check what every stage of installing software is about.

It's up to you but realize that my recommendation was a stage, not an end.

Re: Disable Antivirus Auto-Protect Greyed Out

For me I removed Core security free version & everything was fine after a restart but this Monday the greyed out disable auto protect was back, a restart fixed it again but the only change is that same Monday I auto run a full system scan, nothing was found according to history but i'm wondering if this full scan has something to do with the greyed out settings appearing even though nothing is found in most cases.

Re: Disable Antivirus Auto-Protect Greyed Out

I thought I had this fixed yesterday by setting my auto protect to aggressive but it came back greyed out after liveupdate and a windows update then rebooted it came back. the thing is we shouldnt have to constantly reboot just to fix this

Re: Disable Antivirus Auto-Protect Greyed Out

You don't have to remove programs.  It's easier just to Exclude by Auto Protect > reboot and see what happens.   Trick is to find trigger which are usually low reputation programs.
Caveat:  work around posted here Permalink is for greyed settings not caused by pending malware remediation which lucky for us also greys settings.

I wanted to post here merely to be another voice expressing that Im also running into this problem. No only does it block the option to "Disable Auto Protect" but its seems to block the option to close Norton Security Suite, even through task manager. Very weird.

Norton cannot be stopped via Task Manager.  If you can End task then malware can and we don't want that.

Well it's now 2016 and the problem is no better, for me I have twice un-installed Norton Security to overcome the problem, then re-installed it.

Re: Disable Antivirus Auto-Protect Greyed Out

Hello Metal Man 68

Do you have version 22.6.0.142? Have you enabled Exploit Prevention in the Firewall Settings? According to this KB

https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/norton-security/current/solutions/v115916176_EndUserProfile_en_us?q=Auto-Protect+is+greyed+out

The only thing is that this KB is from last Nov. I would suggest that you have a chat with Customer Support at  http://www.norton.com/chat .  Chat is usually available 24/7 depending on location.

Thanks.

Re: Disable Antivirus Auto-Protect Greyed Out

Agreed & Tested. I had this issue because of the third party software called "LedshowYQ 2016". Then I've uninstalled it, just to check. It fixed the issue. As "bjm_GURU" mentioned above, all you have to do is find the program which puts NORTON in to automatic high alert mode and then exclude from the list or uninstall from the PC.

Hello Pasan,
Since, opening post is 2015.  I'll update that recently since 22.7.
I've had a few Auto-Protect greyed with asterisk.
Re-start not under Fast Startup influence sorted for me recent Auto-Protect greyed with asterisk.
I've also had since 22.7 one Auto-Protect greyed without asterisk.
Remove & Reinstall Tool sorted for me Auto-Protect greyed without asterisk.
I have a few favored programs with Exclude from Auto-Protect.
I'll go thru Norton Insight > Untrusted Files and Trust Now favored items.

Hi everyone,

Your PC is not automatically protected from viruses, spyware, and other risks" and Auto Protect is grayed out" issues via LiveUpdate. This will update all languages for 22.7.0.76, and will not change the product version.

Note: A system restart is required to apply patch.
