Disable 'Norton Antivirus' automatic product update to 'Norton Security and Backup'

Hello everyone,

I have a Norton Antivirus product installed. After some time it gets automatically updated to Norton Security and Backup. This is not a desired behavior and I need to stick to Norton Antivirus solution only, so I do NOT need it to be update automatically.

Is it a way to adjust configuration of local Norton Antivirus installation, so it will stick to Norton Antivirus product only?

I have disabled in settings "Automatic product updates", but it still gets updated.

In my profile I have "Norton Security Premium" purchased.

Thanks!

What product have you paid for? The basic Norton Antivirus, or the Norton Security Premium (with backup)?

Hi AndreyGr,

Not sure this has anything to do with what you are experiencing, however there is a very old thread concerning the upgrade of NAV version 21 to Norton version 22.  If you read through the thread, there is a lot of talk about the "Automatic Product Updates and how that function works in regards to accepting the upgrade.

I'm afraid things may have changed since that time frame and it may not continue to work as described in that thread.

@peterweb

Sorry for adding that "ancient" info and possibly taking this thread off track.

@peterweb, thank you for your post, I have paid for "Norton Security Premium" for 10 devices. Basically I was looking for Antivirus only. But this is only the option I have found for several devices available that time.

Thanks!

@yank, thank you for pointing to that thread - will check that as well!

Norton Anti Virus is only available for for one device, so you would need multiple copies to cover multiple devices. As you do have the Norton Security Premium because you needed to cover multiple devices, if you do not want to use the Backup or Firewall features, you can always turn those off in the Product settings. But as the firewall is included, you might as well use it. Backup feature you can take or leave as you need.

@peterweb, thank you for explanations. Yep, that is pretty straight forward approach.

In my case I got a little-bit different case: I have started working with a Client and have to use VPN client (Pulse Secure) which has an endpoint validation rules, and it accepts AV SW with name "Symantec AntiVirus" but has no idea about "Norton Security and Backup", thus endpoint doesn't pass validation check and VPN is not being installed properly.

Solution I am using so far - is to reinstall "Norton Security and Backup" every one-two weeks back to AV. Thus was wondering whether it is possible to block such updates. But looks like it is not really possible. Potentially, I can try to find and istall AV version 21.x and block "Automatic product update"

Thank you!

Not sure how Norton Antivirus would show as Symantec AntiVirus. I would contact the company providing the validation and have them update for the newer Norton products.

Other users here in business settings also have security validation software that seems to block Norton after any major update. The users have had to contact that company to get the validation rules updated.

Here is a recent post about this. Note the links in the post by @SoulAsylum  about possible workarounds for that product. Maybe it is something you can use in your situation.
