Disable Norton Family Unlock Pin?

This new feature is causing issues, I set the pin but my child saw it so was able to unlock the pc so I removed the pin and now he can use a blank pin to unlock the pc. how can I disable this feature or hide the pin so he cannot see it when I set or amend his time?

Re: Disable Norton Family Unlock Pin?

Keith, I think you can generate your own custom PIN and save it for your child.

Re: Disable Norton Family Unlock Pin?

I know you can generate your own pin but I don't want a pin at all. I set my son's time each day based on his behaviour and achievements, he gets more time if he does certain things without being asked etc. The pin is in plain view when I set his time and he has used this to unlock his PC while I am not around, I would rather not have the feature at all. When I removed the pin he was able to unlock his PC using a blank pin.

Re: Disable Norton Family Unlock Pin?

Hi Keith

Thanks for bringing this to our notice, we have a problem with a blank PIN, we will address it.

For now you can generate a new PIN and child will not be able to by pass PIN screen (unless he knows the new PIN).
You can change the PIN (or policy settings) in portal, using a different machine.

PIN feature is provided as a flexibility for parents to extend the time locally on the child machine (which will not affect the time policy settings in portal).

PIN "plain view" - Right now it is designed for the parents to know their PIN by logging in to the portal.
We will review the requirement for PIN being displayed as "plain view".

This is stupid feature that came from out of nowhere without notifying your customers. I do not even know how this set and how to disable it. I do not want a pin.

Re: Disable Norton Family Unlock Pin?

gideon3345,

The program currently doesn't have a way to disable PIN. For Windows users, the PIN dialog will appear when they get past all the time notifications and after the PC gets locked. The PIN is required for the parent to unlock the PC locally in this scenario.

The engineering team is working on some improvements for the feature in the next release.

Can you please let us know what features you are looking in the "custom PIN"?

Re: Disable Norton Family Unlock Pin?

Dear Katie, I have another problem with the PIN within Norton family. I have generated my own custom PIN as described in the links mentioned above. However, my son can use the old PIN and the novel PIN does not work although I have clicked the save button. Any recommendation is appreciated.

Re: Disable Norton Family Unlock Pin?

Hi burkhard1909,

If the child is still able to use the old PIN to unlock the system, even though you have changed and saved a new PIN in your Norton Family account, can you please send the following information to me by private message via the forum by clicking Inbox at upper right hand corner?

1, Your Norton Family account email.

2. Old PIN

3. New PIN

Thanks

Re: Disable Norton Family Unlock Pin?

Hi burkhard1909,

Please try the following to see if these help.

Update the house rules on the child's PC by clicking on Norton Family Icon in the task bar and choose “Update House rules” from the menu that appears and make sure he has active internet connection.

Also please let us know if you are able to change other policies and sync that successfully to that machine.

Thanks

Katie

Re: Disable Norton Family Unlock Pin?

having issues with the PIN lock/unlock. it keeps locking the phone, even when my child is allowed to use the phone during the allowed hours.

I have tried disabling the PIN but that does not work. It says the device must be unlocked first (it was).

I'm loosing faith in Norton and doubt I will be renewing this year. already looking for an alternative.

Re: Disable Norton Family Unlock Pin?

Couple of clarifications regarding PIN and lock issues reported here:

1. We have made changes wherein the PIN is no longer in clear text. It is masked in the Family Portal and on your devices (both PC and Android) so that your child cannot watch while you are editing.

2. If you notice a message that "the PC/device is locked", it is likely that you have used Instant Lock (the lock icon on each child) to lock the child's devices. You can unlock from the Portal or locally using the PIN. If you see the lock screen shown repeatedly on the device, we can help troubleshoot.

3. The PIN is not mandatory. Though we generate a default PIN, you can change it anytime. You also have an option to not use the PIN at all. Once the curfew elapses, the device/PC will be available for use automatically.

4. If you have changed the PIN in the Family portal and saved it, it needs to be synchronized with the device. This will happen for all devices that are online. If a device is offline, it is likely that that it still retains the old PIN. Once the device is online, you should be able to use the new one.

Hope this helps. Thanks.
