Disabling Edge Browser in Windows 10?

Until such time that Norton Family is able to properly monitor activity in the new Edge browser, what is the recommend means for disabling the Edge browser in Windows 10?  Simply changing the default browser setting in the OS, will not prevent a child from launching Edge.

Re: Disabling Edge Browser in Windows 10?

Hi MikeZinSAT,

Because Edge, like Internet Explorer, is integrated into the Windows operating system it's not a good idea to try to remove it.

From Windows Ten Forums:

Hope this helps,

Hi MikeZinSAT,

We are working on this to resolve the issue.  For now, in order to have complete protection in the browser your child must use another browser, such as Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox for Norton Family to monitor online activity.

Thanks Ballistic.  I ran across that on TenForums last night while researching the issue.  Sounds like there's no just good answer at this time. - mz

For now I would follow KatieQ's suggestion and use an alternate browser for the time being. I use the latest version of Firefox, which supports the Norton Toolbar.

Re: Disabling Edge Browser in Windows 10?

MikeZinSAT,

The executable for Edge is located at

C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\MicrosoftEdge.exe on a default Windows 10 Installation.

If you try the steps on this website, they still work in Windows 10:

http://www.trishtech.com/2013/02/how-to-block-a-program-in-windows-8-fir...

The browser won't be able to browse, so this should solve the problem.

Cheers,

Gordon Webb

**Edit:  This was actually easier than I thought.  If you scroll down through the existing list of outbound rules in the firewall, you will see there are already 2 entries for Microsoft Edge.  Rather than add a new one, just right click on each already existing rule, select properties, and hit the radio button for block (rather than allow, which is already selected by default) and hit apply.  This does work, verified on my own system.

I looked at GK Webb's solution, and it is a good idea, but doesn't work if you have Norton Security Suite installed.  Instead, you need to block it in Norton's firewall, as that is the active one.

Launch NSS, click Settings.  In the new dialog for Settings, click Firewall, then go to Program Control.  Scroll to the Edge browser, or more simply, type Edge in program search and hit enter.

Under "Access" select block for Edge and Edge Content Process.  Click the Apply button.

Edge runs, but can't go anywhere.  Once Norton fixes edge so it can work with Norton Family, you can re-enable it.

Re: Disabling Edge Browser in Windows 10?

THANKS to both you and Mr. Webb, for your suggestions.  I do have NSS, so it sounds like in my case your solution would work.  So far it hasn't really been an issue.  I just made IE the default browser and hid the icons for Edge.  Only a matter a time I though, before one of my kids figures that out I suspect.  I was hoping that by now Norton would have an update out.  But I'm sure Microsoft's curve ball has thrown a lot of vendors off. - mz

Setting Windows 10 default browser to IE instead of Edge introduces another inconvenience : Hyperlinks in Office (2003) - Outlook emails won't open anymore.

Hi Ben,

Please let us know what version of Norton Family you have.  The latest version is 3.4.0.45.  To find the Norton Family version number, please click the Norton Family icon in the system tray and select “About Norton Family”.

Thanks,

Re: Disabling Edge Browser in Windows 10?

I've got Norton 360 2.5.5.15. Since this was the only topic referring disabling Edge I decided to post my problem here, assuming it might be a general problem.

Ben,

Do you have Norton Family installed other than Norton 360?

Thanks

I don't fully understand your question, the only Symantec product I installed is Norton 360 ( Sorry I'm dutch :) )

Thx Ben

Re: Disabling Edge Browser in Windows 10?

Ok.  Norton Family is a parental control program.  I was trying to know if you have both Norton 360 and Norton Family installed on the PC.  From your posts, it sounds like you don't have Norton Family installed.

Re: Disabling Edge Browser in Windows 10?

This registry patch solves  the problem. Apart from making IE the new default browser one new register entry has to be made in order forcing outlook also to use IE to open hyperlinks.
