Disk optimization and disk defragging

I just installed the trial version of NS. One feature which I don't clearly understand either reading about it in the manual or talking with a "chat expert" (who had no idea how to answer this) is the disk optimization option.

If you look under Tasks Scheduling, the last option is disk optimization. It says it "rejoins fragmented files". I can only assume this is different from disk defragmentation as you do not want to defrag a SSD and it comes pre checked (or at least mine did).

Can someone please explain if it is different and do I want to leave it checked if my C drive is a solid state drive? My other drives are mechanical HD's.

Thanks...

Re: Disk optimization and disk defragging

My two cents ~ Disable Optimizer
The first thing I did on my install of NIS was disable Idle Time Optimizer
The first thing I'll do on my install of NS is disable all Tune-up Tools

Leave SSD TRIM to your OS

Re: Disk optimization and disk defragging

Hi,

Although SSD's can be defragmented, with some of these, this could have some negative effects, (life span etc).

I would stay away from these Norton optimizations and run only native Windows defragmenter 3-4 a year.

You can also do it from cmd with different switches enabled, (with HDD's).

Re: Disk optimization and disk defragging

Thanks for the advice. I reread the manual and found on page 256 that it only defrags a SSD in Windows 8. I'm running 7 so I'm ok for now. I have an Intel SSD and use the Intel Toolbox utility to manage it's operation.

Re: Disk optimization and disk defragging

Tell me it has not been doing a defrag on my ssd?!?!? I am on Windows 8.1! Here is what the manual says as you pointed out. Upon reading this. I disabled it right away and idle optimizer as well. I hope it has not damaged my ssd. I thought NS would re-enable the Windows 8 settings for disk work. It did not and I had to manually re-enable it. Picture attached of NS manual talking about defrag ssd in Windows 8.

FattiesGoneWild

It is my understanding the Norton optimiser just enables the built-in Windows optimiser. In my opinion it is not worth running defrag on any Windows 7 or 8 systems as any benefit is negligible. In most circumstances all that is needed is running the Windows Disc Optimiser every so often.
