Disk Optimizer Not Doing C Drive?

I am running Win 7 Home.

I am trying to use Norton Security to optimize my C Drive, that main drive that comes with nearly all PCs. When I run the Optimizer, though, it is doing only two external hard drives attached to the computer by USB, not the internal C drive. I am trying to find the settings to change this but I can't. I scoured the admin setting under Settings and nothing is popping out at me re adding the C drive to optimization process, and removing the others.

I looked through the manual and am finding nothing about how to do this.

Can anyone help?

Is the main (C) drive SSD? These aren't optimised as they don't need it & can be damaged/life shortened if you do.

Not on this machine, no. Regular HD.

Now that you know that, can you tell me where can I change it?

Re: Disk Optimizer Not Doing C Drive?

Part of disk optimization is the windows defrag, is that what it's not doing?

click the start button and in the search bar type in dfrgui.exe.  Then click on it when it's listed on the top of the menu bar.  Does the defragger show the C drive?  What happens when you manually try to run it?

Re: Disk Optimizer Not Doing C Drive?

I'm not asking how to run Defrag outside of Norton Security. I am asking how to add the C drive to Disk Optimizer within Norton Security. Can you tell me how to do that?

Re: Disk Optimizer Not Doing C Drive?

Norton merely summons the Windows Optimizer.  Follow DaveH's advice to see what that is set up to do.

Dave did not advise on how to add the C drive to Norton's Disk Optimizer. Can you help?

He did if you look at his suggestion and SendOfJive's comment. Norton uses Windows Optimization routines. If you set Windows Optimization to defrag C drive, then it should be optimized when the Norton task is called.

Re: Disk Optimizer Not Doing C Drive?

Sorry, I misunderstood what you were trying to tell me.

It does show up as a drive on Defrag. See attached .png zipped up. How can I get Norton Security's Disk Optimizer to recognize it?

Re: Disk Optimizer Not Doing C Drive?

From your image, did you manually start the optimization of C drive? If so, what fragmentation level was reported before you started the defrag?   Norton may use a higher level of fragmentation before calling the Optimization.

EDIT

How did you determine C was not being Optimized?

Re: Disk Optimizer Not Doing C Drive?

Norton will skip a drive if Windows reports the drive is less than 10% fragmented.

A little bit of knowledge is... well a little bit of knowledge.

Re: Disk Optimizer Not Doing C Drive?

Are you sure? Because it's not skipping the F and H drives, and those are 0%.

Re: Disk Optimizer Not Doing C Drive?

Because when I run Norton's utility, I see it go through F drive, then H drive, and that's it.

I have to run out for the night so I'll reply to you tomorrow. Thanks.

Re: Disk Optimizer Not Doing C Drive?

Can anybody advise on this? I just find it odd that there would be no way to manually add the one drive that 99% of all PC users are certain to have to this process.

Re: Disk Optimizer Not Doing C Drive?

Again, it is the Windows Optimizer that is doing the defragging.  Norton is merely telling it to run.  So no, there is nothing you can do to Norton to change what is optimized.  Your options with Norton are "Optimizer ON" or "Optimizer OFF."  Have you manually had the Windows Optimizer analyze the C:\ drive?  Maybe it simply does not need defragging at this point.

Never mind.
