diStRptr.dat still a problem

There have been several threads but no solution to the HDD write load that can be traced to diStRptr.dat.  I have had the issue for at least two years, on different computers, with different versions of Norton.  I reset diStRptr.dat 8 days ago; the file is now at 3.3Mb. When it gets to 10Mb (about two months), my HDD access becomes slow. If it gets to 20Mb, then the system becomes nearly unusable. Is there any way to keep this file to a manageable level?

Re: diStRptr.dat still a problem

Hello user1200 By chance do you have installed or still running Norton Utilities on this system? Any old versions of Norton software that haven't been properly removed?

Cheers

No. This computer is about a year old, Windows 10 Pro - this was the only Norton product ever installed.  Had the same problem with previous computer, Windows 8 upgraded to Windows 10 Home, Norton 360 original installation. Helped other neighbors with same problem - don't know what they had.

Re: diStRptr.dat still a problem

A week later diStRptr.dat is up to 4.5mb. I was hoping the program change to version 22.12 would reset the file.

Re: diStRptr.dat still a problem

user1200 Your Norton product should be version 22.12.0.104 since that is the current release. Download and run this tool so we can rule out a rootkit being the problem: https://www.malwarebytes.com/antirootkit/

IF that scan doesn't show anything remove and reinstall your product using this tool and instructions: https://support.norton.com/sp/en/us/home/current/solutions/v60392881_EndUserProfile_en_us

Another user had positive results in this older thread: https://community.norton.com/en/comment/6352641#comment-6352641

Please let us know your results.

Re: diStRptr.dat still a problem

So I did the RnR nine days ago. diStRptr.dat was started out <50kb. Currently it's at 247kb. For whatever reason, it created its own backup file yesterday morning; at that time it was 202kb.  Obviously, this is much better than the 0 -> 3Mb increase I had previously.

Re: diStRptr.dat still a problem

user1200 Did you install and perform the scan with Malwarebytes to rule on possible malware?
