Do you want to be able to jump to the last post in thread?

Hello all forum users.

Can you help settle an argument between myself and the Norton team?  Well not so much an argument more an interesting discussion.

I have said that there is a strong case to have a link that enables users to jump straight to the last post in any thread (whether read or not).  My reason is that this is the most recent post and so the one you are most likely to want to respond to and, in long threads if there are no unread posts the only current way of getting to the end, or near it, is to page through all the other posts.

Do you think this is a good idea - or not?

The way I have suggested that is could be done is to put an extra link into the forums list page.  So:-

The above is an example of a thread as might be shown in a forum list.  The blue underlines are currently active links.  The green underline would be a live link if there were unread.  I have proposed that where I show the brown underline should be a live link to the last post in the thread.  Do you agree - or not?

Mike

Hi Andmike,

Seeing how difficult it is to manage the read and unread messages across threads, your suggestion would be helpful for everyone, I suppose.

So, I agree.

I think there should be a link to the 1st unread post not necessarily the last post in the thread. That way if there are multiple posts since you last read the thread you will start where you left off.

Maybe a link to both???

Hi, Mike. I agree. I always jump to the last post, or I did when we were on good old Lithium !  I just jumped to the last numbered page and worked back from there, so I could see how things had progressed. I do NOT want to have to read each thread every time, from the beginning.

Hi Jim.

There is already a jump to first unread, as I hoped I had explained in my first post.  In the forum list page there are three columns of numbers on the right.  The middle one (New) shows the number of unread comments.  If you click on that number, it takes you to the first unread.

My request is to enable users to get to the end when there are no unread.

Yes I would like this feature too and posted a request here;

Thanks Krusty.

I was not trying to ignore your earlier request just give the idea greater prominence.

Re: Do you want to be able to jump to the last post in thread?

Yes, I do agree. It is a very handy tool. It might have been suggested before that clicking on the number of unread messages on a thread would send you to the first unread message, but this has not been my experience. It does send you to the start of the page where the first unread message is, not the unread message itself. I can perfectly live with this, no problem to me, so my reference to it here is for just in case I might have been missing something. Whatever way they choose to implement the improvement, either the way already suggested by others or having the last page always included in the page list at the bottom of each page, as it is common practice in most forums, such as:  1  2  3  4 ... 19. They will all be fine with me.

Re: Do you want to be able to jump to the last post in thread?

An update for anyone who is undecided.  If you look at the thread "IMCE what happened" in the forum it has now reached 54 replies and so runs to two pages.  Under these circumstances to reach the last post (if it is marked as read) you have to go to the first post, scroll through 50 replies then click on (page) 2.  Then scroll on for the next few replies.

Oh and going back .... well that is another issue....

And if you want any more evidence try getting to the end of Listing Forum Ranks (clue - its currently on page 57)!

What about a "jump to the last page" option on the pagination?

I'm with you on this "Andmike" - actually I thought I'd already "voted my solidarity" ... but I guess I'd only dreamed it!

Yes - I think it would be very helpful for doing "within thread" navigation if the Forum Team were to implement quick-navigation bars (perhaps Lithium-like,) at both the top and at the bottom of each page of reply posts...

BTW: Resurrecting the old Ranks thread was perfect for this example - double Kudos for that!

Kind regards,

John

+1 for a link (in each forum's thread item) to the last post in the thread.

A "jump to last page" link in the thread's pagination toolbar would also be nice ... along with having the thread's pagination toolbar at both the top and bottom of each thread's page (so one does not have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the thread to get to the pagination toolbar).

One other suggestion ... in the thread pagination toolbar, also include a link to the first page.

Great idea Tony, also a jump to first page.  However to use that you have to go into the thread and then choose the jump to last page, so I think the jump to last post from the forum page is more valuable if we can only have one.

Enough of this talk of The Last Post I'm starting to get images of bugles and flags......

Re: Do you want to be able to jump to the last post in thread?

I fully agree with this idea. Additionally we should have the following:

  1. A way to jump back to the beginning of the thread.
  2. A SORT option in our profile page so we can choose ascending or descending order for threads and posts within a thread.

Re: Do you want to be able to jump to the last post in thread?

Of course we need quick navigation to the first and last post in the thread - I do not understand where Tony is coming from???

The Comcast Forums (on Lithium) are very easy to get to the newest or the original post - show below in order to refresh your memory: The blue arrow is a link to the original post and the red arrow is a link to the most recent post.

Another forum I am active on does it this way, with the blue being a link to the Original post and the red being a link to the most recent post - which really comes in in handy since there over 1,000 posts. (circled in black)

IMHO, not having these functions may really degrade the assistance provided on this forum - it's enough of a PITA to have to try to get posts where they belong , not being able to find what you just posted, and being a bit awkward navigating (slowly creeping through) the forums, and now we have to beg for an added feature?

Indeed it is a good idea!! It is a must, the issue deserves high priority.

Try to look at today's post in the thread 'Listing Forum Ranks'. Unfortunately I clicked the thread link, now I am unable to find the most recent posts.

And the “jump to page bar” has only a > sign that brings me to next page. I miss a >> to go to the last page. I think this is the way Tony Weiss suggested, but it needs scrolling down to the end (or navigation keys <End> [to the Comments] and then <PageUp> [to the pagination bar]. I really want Andmike's suggestion.

Re: Do you want to be able to jump to the last post in thread?

We really need:

  • A link to the last post in a thread - in every thread item listed in each forum (make the date and time of the latest post a hot link).
  • A "jump to last page"  and "jump to first page" in every thread's pagination toolbar (standard in most other forums).
  • Thread pagination tool bars at both the top and bottom of each page of posts (each forum's list of threads have pagination tool bars at top and bottom of each page ... just re-use the code and do the same for each page of posts in a thread).

These are basic forum navigation tools, and are missing from this new forum. Is anyone from Symantec actually working on implementing these much needed features?

Re: Do you want to be able to jump to the last post in thread?

I'm not sure about the other features that geek47 mentions in the previous post but I know that the "jump to last post" feature is now on the team's to do list.

But I don't know when the feature will appear.  I hope it will be soon.

Thanks Andmike.

I also hope the team can quickly provide the needed navigation features.

Getting to the last (most recent) post in a thread like this one ...

... is currently an exercise in frustration!

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned somewhere else but I noticed that threads exceeding 9 pages of replies now have  a |<< (scroll to first page) and >>| (scroll to last page) button on the pagination bar at the bottom of each page.

Scroll to the bottom of page 1 of the old Listing Forum Ranks thread to see an example.  I'd post an image but, well, you know....
